Book 2: In the Life of Mia: College Chapter 84

We were on the open road by 12:15pm and once near the city limits Maureen called my father using her cell phone and told him we were just mins away from his office. “If we see police or any funny business we turn around and make sure to find someone else who can help us. As for Mia yes, she’s fine sir, Billy promised he’d keep her alive and he will unless he see’s something he doesn’t like” she was a great actress as she followed everything to the “T” as I instructed knowing my father well. Once off her phone she looked as though she was starting to worry a little, “I’m sure he said something that frightened you, but I promise you won’t be getting any backlash with this and that’s another reason I made sure you recorded your side too. I appreciate you doing it for him since we both know deep down he’s just a scared and hurt little boy inside and had to do what he thought he needed for someone to finally pay attention” I tried to keep optimistic about it all. I held on tight to her hands and all the evidence we now had not wanting her to go into the building either. I had pulled over just a few miles away from my father’s office and had her take over driving and dropped me off a few blocks away.
Maureen was scared that me going in alone could have consequences not only for her brother but for her as well, but I had promised her that I would see her in just a few hours. “If anything goes wrong, I’ll be sure to get to you or send you some type of message ok, if I’m not back in 2 hours leave and don’t look back. If you must take all the evidence to someone who you trust who can help. I’m not going to stop fighting for your brother even if that means I continue to be his prisoner until it’s over and he’s safe” I promised closing the door and putting my ball cap down making sure all my workout clothes and shoes were tight and straight. I did not want anyone to notice that it was me since I was trying to save a man’s life even though he was guilty for some and innocent for others. I took off like a bat out of hell running around the block a few times and then heading up the final street towards my father’s office taking the back way knowing I’d have access with the key pad and no one would even think to keep it protected.

After making it through the door and hiding my face from the cameras that were all over the hallways and lobby area of the building that not only housed the law office but other businesses. I saw from the lobby that there was security everywhere looking for the truck or anything else that would pull up. I got in the next elevator that opened and put in the code to make sure that the elevator would not stop but would shoot all the way to the 23rd floor of the building where my father was waiting. I was doing my best not to shake as I was not sure what I would find once I got to the top. I knew they would be alerted with all the key entries I had made on the panel of the elevator and was not sure what would be waiting as the doors opened. The doors opened and the only thing that was happening were people waiting to go down no extra people waiting which seemed odd, but it hit me that security would be tight in the front and only a few on the main floor until I arrived. The main receptionist at the counter tried to stop me as I walked past her desk until I turned and faced her pulling my cap up so she could see me. She was reaching for her phone when I slammed it down, “NO…. I’m going in there and if you pick up that phone, you’ll be sorry. I’m going to walk backwards and if I see you pick it up, I’ll run right out of here” I squeezed her hand making sure she understood before letting go.

Ralph and Bailey were standing alone in the hall watching and looking out the window and the other looking at me as I had my cap down covering my face just enough so they didn’t know who I was. I was stopped halfway with guns drawn and pointed right at me. “Real slowly take your hands out of your pocket and put your hands on your head… then get down on your knees” Ralph hissed harshly. I took my hands out of my pocket and let them fall to my side with the flash drives in my hands and started walking towards to two men who were now screaming at me to get down on the ground. I lifted my head so they could see it was me as I stopped and they both gasped letting their shoulders relax and holstering their guns. Bailey got on the radio with his team while Ralph did the same and before I knew it my father was coming out of his office as I was taking off my ball cap. “Jesus….Mia” with barely a whisper so soft and quiet that I almost lost it. He picked me up into his arms as he collided with my body with such fierceness and cried as he let all his worry slowly leave him.

Still in business mode I stiffened and told him to put me down, “I’m here to discuss business and what our first steps are going to be now that we have 4 in custody and more evidence rolling in daily. I have a plan I’d like to share so if you have time to discuss I’d appreciate it, and if you don’t agree with any of it, I understand. However, if you decide it’s too risky, I will take it to another law firm and continue to fight for Billy whether you approve or not” I tone was firm and precise. My father straightened and finally put me down and walked me into his office with Ralph and Bailey wanting more answers from me. “I am not giving either of you anything at this time except that I’m going back to Oxford the moment I’m able to, and I’ve actually been continuing with my classes and am doing great. Which reminds me Bailey if you are still going to work for me after this is over or take this as a betrayal it’s up to you, but if you are up for it and do decide to stay and can forgive me…..well I need you to get started on moving all my things out of Leona’s house as of now and move me to a new place near school. I’m thinking maybe an apartment something small since I’m a little tired of things that just right now are not me” I demanded before closing the two men out.

For the next hour and a half my father and I went through the videos and the flash drive’s I had brought with and laid it all out for him and how I thought we could go about
winning the case. “I mean it’s a win in that yes he’s guilty for some murders, 1 accident and a mental breakdown when it came to Vi who yes deserves justice, but so does Billy and his family. I also know he’s willing to take what come’s next which for Vi’s murder it’s very weak evidence and I am going to make sure that he gets the help he deserves. I just now need the best lawyer in the world to help get us that win. I have his sister on board which is good, and she’s going to talk with their mother’s parents about the rest which they are going to be a little touch she said since they turned their backs on him years before and he has no one else but me and Maureen. Look I need to check in with her and let her know I’m good and that your either in or out” I watched him as I reached for my burner phone in my jacket.

Maureen was breathing hard when I called which I felt bad for keeping her waiting as I was with my father “Hey, we are still working on fine tuning it all up and working on the first part of what we want to present to the D.A. so if you can give me about 30 more mins? I will meet you at the same spot you dropped me and let Billy know I’m doing my best ok” I spoke softly into the phone. My father bitched and complained, over the next 30 mins as I fought him on every turn as we talked about what to do first. “You are not going back to that man’s prison whether you can get out at any time or not, I’m not going to risk your life again….” he was now on edge when in walked Ralph and Bailey as though they were all about business now. “For fuck sake if you take me against my will I will refuse to help on this case and I will tell him to run and never look back…I’m trying to save this young man’s life damn it and you are just not seeing the whole picture” I bitched in frustration.
