Chapter 157 Vulgar and Unbearable
"Lumi's doomed," Skyview said, a humorless smile playing on his lips as he read through her file. "Streaming can be a ladder out of poverty, but so many who climb it still cling to that same old mindset, oblivious to the rules of the game."
He shook his head. "Did she really think she could get away with remixing the solemn national anthem? Some people never learn."
Skyview felt no sympathy for her. Public figures basked in the adoration of millions, but that adulation came at a price. Greater responsibility, greater scrutiny. Every word and every action were magnified and dissected under the public light.
"There are things you can get away with when you're a nobody," Lily agreed. "But fame changes everything. You become a role model, whether you like it or not. Your words have power, and with great power comes great responsibility."
The chaos engulfing the streaming industry ignited a sense of purpose in Skyview. He wouldn't stand idly by while these reckless individuals corrupted an entire generation.
The recent news stories about naive children donating their parents' life savings to their favorite streamers filled him with disgust. These people had no shame, no moral compass. They'd do anything for a quick buck.
Lily, her expression grim, added Lumi's name to her list: [Lumi. Charge for WhatsApp friend slot. Tamper with national anthem.] Another career headed for the chopping block.
Neither Skyview nor Lily sympathize with her. These streamers had made their bed. Now they had to lie in it.
Skyview was about to continue when a notification popped up on his computer. A new email from Oliver.
He scanned the message and let out a laugh. "Looks like Oliver's found himself a juicy scandal. Something about Tyler from LiveSync."
"Oliver might be gunning for LiveSync," Lily said, "but exposing a bad guy is a public service, regardless of his motives."
"Exactly," Skyview said. "These high-profile cases are a warning to every other streamer out there. Cross the line, and there will be consequences. Streaming itself isn't wrong. Neither is making money. But it has to be done responsibly, ethically. That's the bottom line."
He opened Tyler's file, his eyes widening as he read. "This guy is begging for trouble."
"What did he do?" Lily asked, her curiosity piqued.
"Let's just say he's not the sharpest tool in the shed."
It turned out that Tyler, in one of his videos, had decided to treat his viewers to a song.
It sounded harmless enough, except the lyrics were anything but innocuous. He was glorifying drug use.
In Golden Valley, where drug use was a scourge, a one-way ticket to ruin, such a blatant endorsement was unthinkable. It made Skyview wonder if Tyler had a death wish.
"Did he fry his brain cells or something?" Skyview asked, incredulous. "Back when I was studying in Evalia, I saw firsthand the devastation drugs can cause."
"Ignorance is one thing," Lily said, her voice cold. "But this? This is criminal. He deserves to be banned."
She added his name to her list: [Tyler. Glorifying drug use. Should be banned.] Her disdain was palpable.
In Golden Valley, those who glorified drugs were enemies of the state.
"I thought finding dirt on these streamers would be difficult," Skyview said, shaking his head. "Turns out they're their own worst enemies."
He let out a sigh.
"Don't lose heart," Lily said, her voice surprisingly gentle. "You have the power to change things now. To use your influence to promote positivity, to weed out the bad apples. You can make a difference."
Skyview looked at her, a flicker of hope igniting in his eyes. "That's true; I had to make things change."
