Chapter 266 News of Death Arrives
"A foreigner?" Skyview echoed, raising an eyebrow. "I thought you were one of the locals. Golden Valley's best and all that."
Eulalia grimaced. "My country's a mess. Not much opportunity for someone with my skills."
"So you turned to mercenary work. Killing for hire," Skyview said, keeping his tone neutral.
"It's what I was trained for," Eulalia said with a shrug, a flicker of something dark crossing her face. "Not much else I'm good at."
"Right. So, who hired you to kill me?" Skyview asked, cutting to the chase.
"Kaelen Darkmoon," Eulalia said without missing a beat. "His assistant, Thelonius, was the middleman. And Hilda Davis was in on it too."
Skyview sneered, "Just as I thought. Those two are playing a dangerous game. They're practically begging for me to crush them."
Eulalia let out a humorless laugh. "And I'm the idiot who thought I could take you out without Suzanne finding out. Look where that got me."
"Do you have any proof?" Skyview pressed, his voice sharp. "Anything concrete linking Kaelen and Hilda to this?" This was the leverage he needed. Hard evidence of their betrayal.
"I have recordings," Eulalia said, a glint of satisfaction in her eyes. "Video recordings of my meetings with Hilda and Thelonius. Everything's there. The whole sordid affair."
Skyview raised an eyebrow. "You came prepared."
"It's good practice," Eulalia said with a shrug. "Never know when it might come in handy."
Skyview frowned. "What about Kaelen? Anything on him?"
Eulalia shook her head. "He's too cautious. Never showed his face. Thelonius handled everything. I've got nothing that directly implicates Kaelen."
"Pity," Skyview murmured, though he wasn't surprised. Kaelen had a reputation for being as cunning as he was ruthless. "Where are these recordings?"
"In my backpack," Eulalia said, nodding towards a worn leather bag on the floor.
It didn't take long for Skyview to find what he was looking for. A seemingly innocuous USB drive, tucked away in a hidden compartment.
He plugged it into his laptop, his eyes scanning the files that popped up. Multiple videos, each one meticulously labeled. Hilda, Thelonius, and Eulalia, their faces clear and recognizable. With this, they wouldn't be able to deny their involvement.
"Well," Eulalia said, her voice taking on an impatient edge. "I've answered your questions. Now, about that trip to the police station..."
She was eager to be gone, to trade the chilling calm of Suzanne's presence for the relative safety of a jail cell. At least there, she knew the rules of the game.
"Take her," Skyview said to Suzanne, waving a dismissive hand. "We're law-abiding citizens; we wouldn't kill anyone secretly."
Suzanne nodded, a ghost of a smile playing on her lips as she led Eulalia away.
A short while later, Eulalia found herself in the custody of the Golden Valley Police Department, her fate hanging in the balance.
Back in his office, Skyview leaned back in his chair, a thoughtful expression on his face. "Penny for your thoughts?" Hekka asked, placing a steaming cup of coffee on his desk.
"I'm thinking about how to maximize our advantage," Skyview replied, his eyes gleaming with cold calculation.
"You mean the recordings of Hilda hiring that assassin?" Hekka asked.
"Precisely," Skyview said, his fingers drumming a steady rhythm against the polished surface of his desk.
"And what are you hoping to achieve?" Hekka asked, her curiosity piqued.
"Ideally?" Skyview said, a slow smile spreading across his face. "I want to significantly reduce the Davis family's stake in the Twin Group. And I want those shares. It's time they learned that betraying me comes at a steep price."
Hekka frowned. "But Hilda is one thing, the Davis family is another. They might not be so quick to sacrifice their interests for his sake."
"That," Skyview said, his voice laced with steel, "is the question, isn't it? Just how much influence does Hilda truly wield?"
"The Davis family owns seven percent of the Twin Group," Hekka pointed out. "That's not insignificant."
"Seven percent," Skyview echoed, his tone laced with disdain. "A paltry sum. A drop in the bucket."
"Don't underestimate it," Hekka cautioned. "The Twin Group is a multi-billion dollar enterprise. Even one percent represents a significant amount of wealth and power."
"True," Skyview conceded. "But it's not enough. Not nearly enough."
"You're insatiable," Hekka said, shaking her head in amusement.
"Greed," Skyview said, his lips curving into a self-deprecating smile, "is the capitalist's creed."
At that moment, a notification pinged on his computer. Skyview glanced at the screen, his eyebrows shooting up in surprise.
"What is it?" Hekka asked, sensing his sudden shift in demeanor.
"Remember that bounty I put on Kaelen's head?" Skyview said, a slow grin spreading across his face. "The one on the dark web? It's been fulfilled."
Hekka's eyes widened. "Already? But it's only been a few hours!"
"Apparently, efficiency is expensive," Skyview said, a hint of dark humor in his voice. "The assassin who took the job is a real professional. Goes by the name of Raymond. Number seven on the dark web hit list."
"Raymond?" Hekka echoed, her brow furrowed. "That name sounds familiar."
"He's not someone you want to cross paths with," Skyview said, his voice taking on a steely edge. "Lucky for us, he's on our side... for now."
