Chapter 245 Lure Her Away
"Out of the next seven missions," Eulalia grumbled, clearly frustrated, "every single one went sideways. It's not about skill, it's just plain bad luck!"
"The worst one? I was about to finish the job, target in sight, finger on the trigger, and bam! Some other hitman takes him out from a rooftop across the street. Talk about a slap in the face!"
"For a while, I was ready to throw in the towel. I started doubting myself, wondering if I was cut out for this gig. But then this mission came along, and I figured, why not give it one last shot?"
She slammed her fist on the table, her face set with determination. "You're right, I can't back down. I won't back down. This time, I'll see it through. I have to. Otherwise, I might as well hand over my badge and call myself a clown, not a hitman!"
Hilda and Thelonius exchanged uneasy glances. Eulalia was a mystery, a walking contradiction. And her stories, each crazier than the last, pushed the limits of believability.
'Can anyone really be that unlucky?' They had their doubts. But then again, her top-notch skills paired with her terrible success rate pointed to one unavoidable conclusion: she was cursed with the worst luck imaginable.
'In a world of seven billion people, there have to be a few outliers, right? Can she pull this off, despite her history of bad luck?' Thelonius pondered the question, weighing the risks against the potential rewards.
He decided to take a leap of faith. "Everyone's luck changes eventually," he said, giving her a reassuring smile. "This could be your turning point, Eulalia. We'll plan this down to the last detail, and taking out Skyview will be a piece of cake."
"My luck has to change sometime," Eulalia agreed, her expression turning serious. "But Blackwing Suzanne... she's a whole different beast. If I go after Skyview directly, I'll be walking into a death trap. She'll take me out before I even get close."
"That's why we need to draw her away," Thelonius said, a sly grin spreading across his face.
"Draw her away? How?" Eulalia asked, her interest piqued.
"We've been doing our homework," Thelonius explained. "And it turns out, Suzanne has family."
"You want to kidnap them? Use them as leverage?" Eulalia's eyes widened. "That's going to be tricky. I heard Blackwing's family lives on a military base. And in Golden Valley, nobody messes with the military."
Eulalia was right. Trying to snatch someone from a military base would be like declaring war on the entire Northern Military District. The fallout would be immediate and brutal. They'd end up in prison, their families ruined, and the Darkmoon and Davis names dragged through the mud. It was a dumb idea, and they weren't dumb.
"We're not that crazy." Thelonius chuckled. "We wouldn't dare touch anyone on a military base. But Suzanne has a brother, Jaxon. And let's just say he's not exactly winning any Brother of the Year awards."
"This Jaxon guy, he's a total mess. Spends all his time in internet cafes, gaming his life away. Apparently, he blew through his sister's entire military pension on those games. He knows he screwed up, so he avoids his family like the plague."
"They've pretty much disowned him. He's a lost cause. A good-for-nothing, but harmless. At least, that's what they think."
"See, Jaxon's got expensive tastes. Those internet cafes and his gaming habits aren't cheap. And since he has no income, he's been borrowing money. Lots of it."
"He's a leech, living off online loans. But he never pays them back. His logic? 'I earned that money with my skills, why should I return it?' He figures, who's going to come after him for a few thousand dollars, especially when he tells them he's a military dependent living on a base? The loan sharks check his story, find out it's true, and back off. It's not worth the hassle."
Thelonius finished his explanation, shaking his head at the absurdity of it all.
Hilda, hearing about Jaxon for the first time, was speechless. "What a piece of work," he finally muttered, shaking his head in disbelief. "Living off borrowed money... that's a disaster waiting to happen. He'll be drowning in debt soon enough."
"The guy's living on borrowed time, both literally and figuratively," Thelonius agreed. "He's got this messed-up philosophy that life's too short to be sober and responsible. He'd rather chase virtual dragons than face reality."
Eulalia, however, was all business. "So, you're thinking we use this Jaxon as bait?" she asked, her eyes gleaming with understanding.
Thelonius nodded. "Exactly. He might be estranged from his family, might not even deserve to be called Suzanne's brother, but blood is thicker than water. If something happens to him, Suzanne will come running. We grab Jaxon, lure her away, and you get your shot at Skyview."
"But what about leaving a trail?" Eulalia countered, her brow furrowing. "Kidnapping Jaxon will raise flags. Unless we silence him permanently, which isn't ideal. And I doubt we can fool Blackwing. She'll see through our charade, and then we're all dead."
