Chapter 259 Saw Through Her Act
Skyview seemed weirdly pumped up by the little girl's presence, his usual laziness swapped out for this almost crazy energy. Lily, on the other hand, felt a twinge of unease. The girl's innocent act didn't quite cover up the creepy vibe she gave off.
A little girl, all alone in this remote spot? It made zero sense. Fear, cold and sharp, sliced through Lily's calm.
"Are you gonna take me home?" the little girl chirped, her voice sweet as sugar. "Please! You must be a kind person!"
"Nope," Skyview replied, sounding totally casual.
The girl's face fell. "Why not?"
"Because I'm lazy," Skyview said, like it was the most obvious thing ever.
"Oh," the little girl said, her disappointment vanishing quickly. She perked up, looking at Lily. "I get it! You don't wanna leave this pretty lady. I hope you both have a lifetime of happiness together!"
A shiver ran down Lily's spine. "I'll take that blessing," Skyview said, a weird glint in his eyes.
"Can you help me with something?" the little girl asked, her voice tiny.
"What do you need?" Skyview asked.
"Can I borrow your phone?" she pleaded. "I wanna call my parents. I'm lost."
Skyview flashed a creepy smile. "Sorry, can't do that."
The little girl's eyes widened in shock. "Why not?"
It was a simple request, one most people would grant without a second thought, especially for such a sweet, seemingly helpless kid. Yet, Skyview refused. Confusion clouded the little girl's face.
Skyview threw back his head and let out a booming laugh, the sound jarring in the still mountain air. His laughter cut off suddenly, replaced by a chilling coldness that seemed to crackle in the air. "Because you're an orphan. A nobody," he spat. "Get it? Idiot."
Tears welled up in the little girl's eyes. "You… you yelled at me."
Skyview didn't budge, his gaze sharp. "Save the act. Kaelen sent you to kill me, didn't he? Disgusting. Hiding behind a child's face." He pretended to gag.
The little girl's tears vanished as quickly as they had come. In their place bloomed a chilling, almost predatory smile. Her laughter, high-pitched and filled with an unsettling glee, echoed through the trees.
"Skyview, " she crooned, shaking her head. "I thought you were just a lucky fool who stumbled into a fortune. But it seems the rumors were wrong. You saw through me. Tell me, how did you know? I'm curious. Never in all my years have I failed to keep up this act."
The little girl was, of course, Eulalia, a deadly assassin hired from the darkest corners of the web by the vengeful Kaelen. Her skills were top-notch, putting her among the best in her field. Luck, however, wasn't her strong suit. Missions often went awry, leaving chaos and unfinished business.
Initially, Eulalia had planned to cut her losses when she found out Skyview was under the watchful eye of Blackwing Suzanne. Bad luck seemed to cling to her like a shadow. But Thelonius's words had struck a nerve, reigniting her professional pride and determination to take Skyview out.
The plan was straightforward: Thelonius would distract Suzanne, leaving Eulalia free to make her move. With Suzanne successfully decoyed, Eulalia tracked Skyview to Mystic Mountain. Finding him in a sea of tourists was tricky, though. While she was confident in her skills, Eulalia wasn't dumb enough to risk a public massacre and bring down the wrath of the Golden Valley government.
Patience, she reminded herself, was an assassin's best friend. She'd wait for the perfect moment. That moment seemed to come when she noticed the undeniable closeness between Skyview and Lily. They were tight, their interactions almost affectionate. Taking them both out would be a poetic end to their story.
But to her frustration, their interactions stayed annoyingly innocent. They settled on a secluded bench, just talking. Growing impatient, Eulalia decided to take matters into her own hands. Humming a cheerful tune, she approached them, playing the part of a lost child.
Her initial plan was to isolate Skyview, lure him away with the promise of helping her find her parents, then silence him before he knew what hit him.
Skyview's refusal to play along forced her to adapt. She'd ask for his phone, a harmless request, and strike while he was distracted, then take out Lily before making her escape.
It was a solid plan, but Skyview saw right through her act. She couldn't help but wonder how Skyview did it.
"Your eyebrows," Skyview said simply.
Eulalia frowned. "What about them?"
"They're too far apart," Skyview explained. "Just like…" he paused, letting the implication hang. "The gap between your legs."
Confusion knitted Eulalia's brows together.
"You try so hard to look innocent," Skyview continued, his voice amused. "But your body gives you away."
"What are you talking about?" Eulalia asked, completely baffled.
"I'm talking about the fact that you're not a virgin," Skyview stated bluntly.
Eulalia scoffed. "As if that's any of your business."
"A ten-year-old girl who isn't a virgin?" Skyview countered, raising an eyebrow. "Doesn't that strike you as odd? Especially in a place like this, where even adults are rare. And then there's the way you look at us… like a predator sizing up its prey. Tell me, Eulalia, how did you think you were going to get away with this?"
Eulalia's eyes narrowed. "So you know who I am. But how did you know I was an assassin?"
