Chapter 48 Betting a Billion
"Has Lakeview Express shut down?" Skyview inquired.
"Not yet," John hesitated, "but Lakeview Express is going through a very tough situation, and it would shut down anyway!"
"Let me ask you this. Within a day, Lakeview Express mysteriously lost 178 parcels," Skyview stated. "Do you think this is a normal loss?"
"Well..." John initially wanted to say it was a normal loss, but such illogical words were difficult for him, a director of Twin Group, to utter. He could only say, "It might be someone deliberately causing trouble!"
Skyview continued, "When did the negative news spread?"
"Today," John replied.
Skyview turned to be serious, looked at everyone, and firmly said, "So, let's analyze this!
"Lakeview Express suddenly fell victim to someone's malicious actions. Then, the media reported our loss of packages, making this accident a scandal!
"But in this world, there are no random incidents!
"Every event has a cause. Why would someone target Lakeview Express? I was puzzled at first, but when I saw John eagerly trying to convene a board meeting to remove me from my position. What a coincidence!
"I work hard at Lakeview Express, achieve results, and if I don't work hard, I can't secure the position of chairman!
"And you, John, you envied me. You thought the chairman position should be yours, so you deliberately sent people to cause chaos and create scandals!
"Then you hastily called for a board meeting and used this incident you caused to attack me, wanting to strip me of my chairman position! Isn't this reasoning brilliant?
"There is only one truth. In this matter, I suffer the most damage, and you benefit the most. Therefore, you are the mastermind behind the scenes!"
Skyview made a long, eloquent analysis. It somehow amazed most of the board members, and no one interrupted.
He pointed at John, like pointed at a criminal.
John was a mix of shock and anger.
At some points, Skyview's reasoning was close to the truth.
But John couldn't admit it.
"You're slandering me! Nonsense!" John retorted. "Do you have any evidence?"
"No," Skyview replied.
"You dare accuse me without evidence?" John snapped.
"Why did you try to remove me from my position then?" Skyview asked.
"Because you screwed Lakeview Express!" John accused.
Skyview put on an innocent look and said, "You know someone is framing me, yet you shift the blame to me. The incident just happened a day ago, and before I could react, you were eager to remove me. You must have malicious intentions, right?"
John was speechless.
He considered himself very clever, but he had fallen for Skyview's scheme.
Skyview's almost frantic behavior had brought some conspiracies to light.
"Yeah, why is Mr. Davis so anxious?"
"Lakeview Express is clearly being set up. Even with Skyview's exceptional talent, it's impossible to counterattack within a day!"
"Mr. Davis is clearly going too far! He's too impatient!"
Several originally neutral directors began to discuss.
Although the situation hadn't completely shifted in Skyview's favor, it was no longer entirely in John's.
Hekka looked on with great admiration, impressed by Skyview's action and courage.
Suzanne thought to herself, 'I thought he was just a trust-fund kid, but he has a smart mind!'
Lily whispered to herself, "Indeed, Skyview is no ordinary person!"
"Well, young man, you are indeed impressive!" John gritted his teeth. "But now the situation at Lakeview Express is irreparable. You are the regional manager of Lakeview Express, you can't evade this leadership responsibility, can you?"
"John, I know you don't like me, and I don't like you either, so let's speak the truth!" Skyview proposed.
"What truth?" John inquired.
Skyview challenged. "I am confident that I can restore Lakeview Express' reputation within a week. Do you believe me?"
John sneered, "I don't."
"Then let's make a bet!" Skyview suggested.
"What kind of bet?" John asked.
"If I can't restore Lakeview Express' reputation within a week, I'll leave the chairman position to you!" Skyview declared.
John's eyes lit up. "Alright, let's bet!"
Mockingly, Skyview added, " I haven't finished yet. If you lose, you owe me a billion, how about that?"
A billion may be a substantial sum, but for John, it was nothing compared to the position of Twin Group's chairman.
"Fine, I'll bet!" John coldly stated. "It's a deal. I'll be waiting for you to abdicate from the chairman's position in a week!"
"Words are wind. We need a written agreement!" Skyview insisted. "Lily, show John the contract!"
Lily handed a folder to John.
"You were well-prepared!" John remarked as he perused the document, then signed his name. "I agree!"
"Excellent!" Skyview exclaimed. "Easy money for me!"
"Young man, don't be too arrogant!" John warned.
"One can't be called young without a bit of arrogance," Skyview retorted.
And so, in the midst of the conflict between John and Skyview, this hasty board meeting came to an abrupt end.
However, Hekka was very angry.
"Skyview, you shouldn't have made this bet with John!" Hekka reproached Skyview.
"I am confident of winning!" Skyview asserted.
"But it's still risky!" Hekka cautioned. "Betting a billion for the chairman's position is not worth it!"
"This was not a fair contract. Lily had it drafted by the most professional lawyer, and John hasn't noticed!" Skyview chuckled. "If I lose, I won't have to fulfill the responsibility at all. What's there to fear?"
"Alright!" Hekka conceded. "What's your plan then?"
Skyview proudly declared, "I will use the power of money!"
"Be serious!" Hekka urged.
With a mischievous smile, Skyview said, "Let's start by contacting the media! The media's influence is immense. If we can persuade them to delete their former reports, our reputation will be restored! !"
