Chapter 277 Erin

Kaelen's face tightened. Getting dragged into this mess was a total setup, and Skyview was definitely behind it! No proof, so nothing would stick, but the humiliation was the real kicker. Skyview was making a joke out of him!

A wave of anger hit Kaelen. This was a slap to his very core! Unforgivable! He was used to getting his way. In Skyscape City, he was untouchable. Even if he committed murder, the cops wouldn't dare touch him. He was the boss there, and they were just pawns. But this was Golden Valley.

A feeling of helplessness gnawed at him. He wanted to refuse to cooperate with the investigation, but he knew he couldn't. Yet, the thought of playing along with this charade made him sick. He was trapped.

Brooklyn watched Kaelen's silence. "Mr. Darkmoon," she said calmly, "we need your cooperation with this investigation."

"And what if I refuse?" Kaelen spat, his voice dripping with venom.

"Then we'll have to take necessary measures," Brooklyn replied, her tone steady.

Skyview clapped his hands together, his eyes gleaming with amusement as he glanced at Kaelen's imposing bodyguards. "Come on, Kaelen," he taunted, "a man of your stature, a pillar of Skyscape City, cooperating with a simple investigation? Don't disappoint! Resist! Show them what you're made of! The Golden Isle City police are just a phone call away. I'd be happy to give them a ring."

He was practically begging Kaelen to lash out. But Kaelen wasn't falling for it. He knew that resisting arrest would only make things infinitely worse.

"Skyview, I am a civilized man," Kaelen said, his voice dripping with disdain, "unlike a brute like you. Of course, I'll cooperate. But Officer Davis," he added, turning back to the detective, "you're not gonna cuff me, are you?"

"This is just a routine inquiry, Mr. Darkmoon," Brooklyn assured him. "No handcuffs necessary."

"Good," Kaelen said curtly, glancing at his watch. "Let's get this over with. I'm a busy man."

"It won't take long," Brooklyn said.

Jacob turned to Skyview. "Mr. Scott," he said, his voice firm, "we will get to the bottom of this. As one of Golden Isle City's most prominent entrepreneurs, your safety is of the utmost importance. This attempted assassination will be thoroughly investigated. We will leave no stone unturned. The guilty will be punished, and the innocent will be cleared."

"I commend your dedication to justice, young man," Skyview said, a hint of admiration in his voice. "You are the future of this country. Keep up the good work."

"Serving the people is my honor," Jacob replied, his chest swelling with pride.

The prosecutor's office moved fast. Hilda and Kaelen were both taken away. Hilda, with all the evidence against him, was definitely heading to a cell. Kaelen, though, only had a brief stay. The entire hitman suspicion was a hassle, but it wouldn't hold up.

Once everyone was gone, John gave Skyview a look that said it all: anger, resentment, coldness, hatred, hostility. Anything but friendly. Skyview just smiled. He had nothing left to lose.

"You've done well," John said, his voice heavy.

"I always do," Skyview replied, sounding casual.

"You destroyed Hilda," John spat, his voice dripping with venom. "My beloved Hilda."

"He was a viper," Skyview said simply.

"The Davis family won't forget this," John threatened, his voice low and dangerous.

"Then come and get me," Skyview challenged, a hint of amusement in his voice. "Farewell." With a final, hearty laugh, Skyview turned and walked away.

John watched him go, slumping back onto the sofa as exhaustion washed over him. He was old, no denying it. No matter how strong his will, age had caught up with him. The repeated failures had taken their toll, leaving him feeling drained and defeated.

"Kaelen, it's up to you now," he sighed, his voice raspy. "I've transferred all my shares to you. You have my full support. I'm too old for this fight. All I can do now is watch from the sidelines as you take on Skyview." A coughing fit seized him, racking his frail body. 'I'll make him pay, 'he thought, his eyes burning with hatred. 'He'll wish he was dead.'

Kaelen burst out of the prosecutor's office, his face contorted with fury. They hadn't deliberately made things difficult for him – after all, he was a public figure – but the routine inquiry was a humiliation he wouldn't soon forget. It was an experience unlike any other, and he loathed it.

He couldn't retaliate against the prosecutor's office; they were a government entity. To do so would be an act of rebellion, and that was a fight he couldn't win. He placed the blame squarely on Skyview's shoulders. This was all his fault. His hatred for Skyview burned hotter than ever.

"I will make him pay," he growled, climbing into his car.

"That bastard," Bridgette seethed. "What's our next move?"

"If I let this stand," Kaelen said, his voice cold, "it will be seen as weakness. I've prepared a gift for Skyview, something special. But to deliver it, I need you to contact someone."

"Who?" Bridgette asked.

"Erin," Kaelen said, his voice a low growl.

"Erin?"

Erin was a legend in Golden Valley.
