Chapter 221 Fearless
Nicholas's words made Skyview laugh out loud. He looked at Nicholas with a smirk, like he was watching a kid who didn't know any better.
Nicholas squirmed under Skyview's gaze. "What? Cat got your tongue?" he blustered.
"You're right." Skyview chuckled, "I don't give a damn about Golden Valley's traditions. But guess what," his eyes sparkled with mischief, "neither do you."
Nicholas stammered, his face turning red. "What are you talking about?"
"Keeping long hair, braiding it with care – those are old Golden Valley traditions," Skyview said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Why aren't you sticking to those ancient customs?"
"Those are outdated, barbaric customs!" Nicholas shot back, puffing out his chest. "We have the right to choose which traditions to follow."
Skyview's grin widened. "And isn't forced marriage an outdated, barbaric custom? The law says men and women can choose their own partners, no interference. Or do the Links think they're above the law? Is the Darkmoon Family above the law?" His voice rose, challenging. "Maybe I should let everyone know how you ignore the legal system?"
Nicholas spluttered, his face turning a weird shade of purple. "That's ridiculous! You're twisting my words!"
"No, Nicholas, it's you who's twisting logic," Skyview said calmly. "Suggesting such a thing nowadays. Kaelen, you should be ashamed. A man of your supposed stature, needing his parents to find him a wife? Have you no shame?"
His words hung in the air, leaving Nicholas and Kaelen speechless. They had underestimated Skyview's sharp wit and even sharper tongue. He could argue circles around them, using logic and law like weapons.
The truth was, this arranged marriage was just a fancy business deal, a power play between two elite families. But these things were done quietly, with a fake sense of respectability. Talking about it openly was vulgar, shameful.
Frustration bubbled up in Nicholas. Reasoning was clearly getting them nowhere. Time for a more direct approach. "Skyview," he growled, his voice low and threatening, "let me remind you of the power the Link Family holds."
"Oh, I'm well aware of the Link Family's influence," Skyview replied, a hint of steel in his voice. "Connected to the White family, government officials in your pocket. I've done my homework."
"Then you understand how serious this is," Nicholas pressed, leaning forward. "I let it slide when you refused to fire Willow, but this is too much. You're messing with the Link Family's plans, crossing a line you shouldn't cross. There will be consequences."
"Is that a threat, Nicholas?" Skyview asked, tilting his head slightly. "What do you want?"
"Leave Willow," Nicholas snarled, his patience wearing thin. "Walk away now, and I'll pretend this never happened. Keep pushing, and you'll make enemies of both the Link and Darkmoon families. You've just inherited the Twin Group, Skyview. Do you really want to risk its future?"
"You seem to forget," Skyview said, his voice calm but steely, "I'm a capitalist. And capitalists aren't afraid to take risks, especially when the rewards are high. If you try to crush me, I'll just take my business elsewhere. Evalia would welcome me with open arms."
He was right. In today's global market, countries were competing for the attention and investment of powerful businessmen like Skyview. Evalia, with its struggling economy, would offer him incentives, tax breaks, anything to secure his investment. The Link Family's influence meant nothing outside Golden Valley.
In fact, Skyview's defection could even backfire on the Links. Their political rivals would jump at the chance to paint them as corrupt, driving away valuable investors.
Nicholas felt a chill run down his spine. He had misjudged Skyview. This guy wasn't easily intimidated. He was bold, audacious, and clearly willing to play dirty.
"You wouldn't dare," Nicholas hissed, his voice trembling with suppressed rage.
"Why wouldn't I?" Skyview challenged, his eyes gleaming with defiance. "I'm a capitalist, Nicholas. Profit is my religion, and I'm willing to break any law, any tradition, to achieve it. Don't test me."
Willow, who had been silent until now, spoke up, her voice trembling with emotion. "If you use your power against Skyview, I'll... I'll kill myself."
Seeing Willow's reaction, Nicholas immediately panicked. "Willow, why do you have to do this?" Nicholas sighed. "Is Skyview really that important to you? Fine, I promise not to use my connections against Skyview."
Nicholas was partly afraid that Willow might actually commit suicide and partly sensed Skyview's uniqueness. He realized that Skyview had no fear in his heart. Nicholas had to take a step back. He was still somewhat apprehensive.
"I won't use my government connections against you, but I will compete with you in business. I was an excellent student at Wharton School!" Kaelen interjected. "My business talent is something you can never match. I'll make you bankrupt and at my mercy!"
