Chapter 267 Confirming the Death News

"Good riddance," Hekka said, her voice dripping with satisfaction. "Tried to have you killed, got a taste of his own medicine. Some might call it karma."

She never hid her hatred for Kaelen. To Hekka, the guy was a snake, and the world was better off without him. Because Hekka already regarded Skyview as family. Anyone who threatened her family deserved to die.

Skyview, though, hesitated, a flicker of doubt crossing his face. "He was dangerous, no doubt. But something about this feels too easy."

Hekka raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"

"Kaelen," Skyview said, his voice hardening, "is a survivor. He doesn't just disappear. I need to be sure."

"And how do you plan to do that?" Hekka asked, curiosity piqued.

A slow, almost predatory smile spread across Skyview's face. "We call him, of course. It's not like his number is a big secret."

Actually, Kaelen's phone number was indeed a secret. However, in this world, some secrets were not secrets at all to certain people.

Skyview never let a little thing like impossibility stop him. And Hekka, with her network of contacts and knack for digging up even the most hidden secrets, was even more resourceful.

It took her less than two minutes, a flurry of whispered phone calls and discreet messages, before she had what they needed. "Got it," she said, rattling off a string of numbers.

"Let's see if the devil answers," Skyview murmured, punching the number into his phone.

The most advanced medical suite in Radiant Care Hospital screamed wealth and privilege. Every detail, from the high-tech equipment to the hand-stitched silk sheets, whispered of Kaelen's power and influence.

He lay propped up against a mountain of pillows, his face pale beneath a faint tan, but his eyes, sharp and alert, showed none of the weakness his body felt.

The surgery had been a success. A bullet to the ribs, while painful, was a minor inconvenience for someone with access to the best medical care money could buy.

But it was the fear, the gnawing uncertainty that ate at him. His room was a fortress, guarded by a small army of loyal men, their every move radiating vigilance.

He knew he was a marked man. The dark web was buzzing with the news of the bounty on his head, a staggering sum that had drawn out the most ruthless predators in the world, including the infamous Raymond, the seventh-ranked assassin on the planet.

As he lay there, his mind raced, piecing together the events that had led him to this moment. There was only one name that kept coming up, one person who had both the motive and the means to pull off such a bold attack. It was Skyview.

The shrill ringing of his phone cut through the silence, making him flinch. He glanced at the screen. An unknown number. He almost didn't answer. But curiosity, and maybe a morbid sense of anticipation, got the better of him.

"Hello?" he rasped, his voice rough from disuse.

"Kaelen?" a voice said from the other end, a hint of surprise, almost amusement, in its tone.

Kaelen's blood ran cold. He recognized that voice. "Skyview," he growled, his voice full of venom. "You think this is a game? Putting a price on my head like some two-bit gangster?"

"You broke the rules," Skyview said, his voice low and dangerous. "I'm just returning the favor. An eye for an eye, right?"

"It wasn't me!" Kaelen spat, though even he didn't believe his own denial.

"Of course not," Skyview said, dripping with sarcasm. "And I suppose the assassin who tried to kill me wasn't yours either?"

Kaelen knew he was beat. Skyview was playing it smart, not giving him anything he could use. "This isn't over, Skyview," he hissed, his voice trembling with rage. "You will pay for this."

Skyview chuckled, a chillingly empty sound. "Empty threats, Kaelen? You sound like a broken record."

"I'm not broken," Kaelen said, his voice regaining some of its former steel. "This isn't over. Not by a long shot."

"We'll see about that," Skyview said, his voice laced with chilling amusement. "Anyway, I didn't call just to hear you wheeze. I have a proposition for you."
