Chapter 275 The Fairness of the Law

"Skyview," Bridgette said, her voice icy, "I hope you remember my face because one day, you'll suffer a fate worse than Thelonius's. You'll beg for death, but it won't come."

Her hands balled into fists, every fiber of her being screaming to strike, to hurt the man who had torn her family apart. But this wasn't some lawless wasteland. This was Golden Valley, a place with rules, and she was stuck playing by them. Without solid proof, any move against Skyview would bring swift and brutal payback.

The frustration was unbearable. Seeing the man who had wrecked her life, standing there smug and untouchable, filled her with a rage that burned her from the inside out.

Skyview, for his part, seemed to enjoy her helpless fury. He waved off her threats, focusing instead on Kaelen and John. To him, Bridgette was just a pawn, insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

"So, you two decided to team up?" Skyview said, glancing between Kaelen and John. He wasn't surprised. The assassination attempt had shown their alliance, and Skyview knew such partnerships rarely fell apart.

"Skyview," Kaelen cut in, ignoring the jab. His eyes were on the young officials flanking Skyview. They were dressed sharply in the crisp uniforms of Golden Valley's Department of Justice, their faces unreadable. "Why bring the law into this? This is a private matter, an internal business dispute."

Kaelen felt a flicker of unease. He had confronted merciless foes and faced death without blinking, but the unyielding power of the state made him hesitate. Golden Valley was a superpower, its reach vast and its power absolute. He might be untouchable in most circles, but even he wasn't above the law.

"Oh, but it's more than that," Skyview countered, his voice dripping with amusement. "As a law-abiding citizen of Golden Valley, I have a duty to report criminal activity. And let's just say certain individuals here haven't exactly been playing by the rules." His gaze landed on Hilda, the unspoken accusation heavy in the air.

Hilda's blood ran cold. He had ignored his grandfather's warnings, thinking he had everything under control. Now, faced with the scrutiny of Golden Valley's finest, he realized his mistake. The prospect of prison, of his life wasting away in a cell, filled him with an unprecedented terror.

John, too, felt a surge of fear. He had acted quickly, or so he thought, to shield Hilda from the consequences of his actions. But Skyview's ruthlessness, his willingness to involve the authorities, had caught him off guard.

Even Kaelen, despite his calm exterior, felt a knot of anxiety tightening in his chest. He had been part of the attempt on Skyview's life. While there was no direct evidence linking him to the act, Eulalia's testimony, if coerced, could be a problem. Skyview might be a thorn in his side, but he was a powerful thorn, a wealthy industrialist with connections at the highest levels of government.

"Don't be ridiculous, Skyview," John blustered, his voice tense. "We're law-abiding citizens. This is just an internal power struggle within our company. There's no need to involve the authorities."

His words were a thinly veiled plea, a desperate attempt to salvage the situation. He was willing to negotiate, to offer Skyview anything he wanted, as long as Hilda was spared.

Skyview, however, was unmoved. He had seen through John's charade and disrupted his frantic attempts to facilitate Hilda's escape abroad. He knew John was desperate, and he intended to exploit that desperation to the fullest.

"Oh, John," Skyview sighed, his voice dripping with condescension. "Don't play coy with me. I'm not in a negotiating mood. You made your bed when you chose to conspire against me. Now, you and your grandson will face the consequences."

He gestured towards the prosecutors, his eyes gleaming with cold satisfaction. "The law is a double-edged sword. It protects the innocent and punishes the guilty. Let's see which side of the blade you fall on."
