Chapter 230 One Fifth
Everybody wanted a bit of admiration and respect. Willow was no exception. But here was the thing: Willow was part of the prestigious Link Family, so she grew up surrounded by privilege. The kind of vanity she craved wasn't something she wanted handed to her by some guy trying to win her over. She wanted to earn it herself.
Now, if it had been a guy she actually liked who gave her that kind of attention, she might've been touched. But Kaelen? He was exactly the type of guy she couldn't stand. So, all she felt was a bit of gratitude, nothing more.
"Thanks, Kaelen," Willow said, her voice flat. "You really didn't have to go through all this trouble for me."
Kaelen quickly realized his grand gesture had fallen flat. Willow wasn't impressed, and she definitely wasn't falling for him. This was not what he had expected.
Kaelen sighed inwardly. He was used to women being drawn to him, but Willow? She was a whole new challenge. The tougher the challenge, the more determined Kaelen got. He loved overcoming obstacles.
So, he switched gears. If he couldn't win her over directly, he'd just take down the competition. Sometimes, winning a woman's heart was about being the better option, not the best.
"Today is the Brighter Futures Ball, and I've already named Willow the Charity Star," Kaelen announced, throwing a smug glance at Skyview. "Some people show up to these events and don't donate a dime. With a net worth of fifty billion dollars, you'd think they'd be more generous." He didn't name names, but everyone knew he was talking about Skyview.
Skyview, though, didn't even flinch. He just smiled, ready to fire back when Oliver, feeling defensive, jumped in. "Isn't Skyscape City kind of a small town?" Oliver said, dripping with sarcasm.
Kaelen shot back, "Actually, Skyscape City is pretty modern. And yeah, any donation is generous. But I gave 80 million dollars, which is a lot for me. You guys are way richer, so you should be donating at least 100 million each, right?"
Kaelen's argument was sharp, leaving Oliver momentarily speechless. He'd framed the donation as a matter of proportion, implying that Skyview and Oliver, being wealthier, should give more.
Oliver was at a loss for words, clearly on the back foot. But Skyview wasn't about to let Oliver take the hit for him. "Kaelen, you're wrong!" Skyview cut in. "Sure, Oliver's the heir to Cascade Group and theoretically richer than you, but he hasn't inherited the company yet. Ken only gave him a measly five billion dollars! If Oliver donated 100 million, that'd be one-fifth of his net worth. And Kaelen, if you're setting the bar, you should donate one-fifth of your wealth too! Your assets are worth ten billion, so one-fifth would be two billion dollars! If you dare to donate two billion, Kaelen, Oliver will gladly donate 100 million!"
Oliver jumped in, "Skyview's right. If you donate two billion, I'll donate 100 million without a second thought! Do you dare?"
