Chapter 206 Stake
John burst into laughter.
In his perspective, Skyview's advocacy for Willow was akin to a misplaced foolishness.
Although Willow was attractive, she was just a trivial employee in the Twin Group, nothing special.
'For such a useless woman, facing a low charge would be worthless,' he thought, a smile widening on his lip.
"A slut has you wrapped around her finger like this?" Yosef looked at Skyview with venom and mocked. "Idiot, you're going to jail!"
"Say again? Fuck you," Skyview snarled, raising his fist again.
Yosef flinched back, fear twisting his features. "Get away from me!"
Skyview lowered his hand with a sneer. "Coward."
"Skyview, you're an embarrassment to our social circle," John said, his voice dripping with disdain. "Utterly foolish!"
He directed his gaze, as keen as a fragment of ice, towards Willow. "She's nothing but a pretty face. Sacrificing so much for her is beyond idiotic."
"You think so?" Skyview shot back, his voice laced with ice. "You're just old and jaded, incapable of understanding real love."
John scoffed. "Say what you will, but I have proof of your assault. We'll settle this legally. Enjoy prison."
Skyview chuckled, a chillingly empty sound. "You think you can put me behind bars?"
"Yes!" John declared, his chin held high. "The evidence is irrefutable."
"Did you ever stop to wonder why I'm not afraid of your threats?" Skyview countered, his eyes boring into John's. "Do you really think I didn't consider the legal ramifications?"
John's heart stuttered in his chest.
'Skyview, despite his infatuation, wasn't stupid. This brazen confidence... Could he actually have an escape route?' he questioned himself.
"Someone pulling strings for you?" John asked, his brow furrowing. "Or perhaps a way to circumvent the law?"
"I hit him because I knew you wouldn't dare lay a finger on me, legally speaking." Skyview's voice was steady, unwavering.
John barked out a laugh, incredulous. "You're delusional! I'd relish the opportunity to see you locked up."
"You wouldn't dare," Skyview stated, his voice laced with quiet power. "Because I'm still the chairman of the Twin Group."
"And?" John challenged. "Being chairman doesn't make you above the law."
"True," Skyview conceded, a sly smile playing on his lips. "But everything boils down to interests, right? We're both capitalists, John. What matters most to us? Profit. With enough at stake, you wouldn't just let me slap you; you'd thank me for cutting off your hand if it lined your pockets."
"Interests..." John echoed, a flicker of understanding dawning in his eyes.
"You're spearheading that high-speed rail project for the Twin Group, aren't you?" Skyview continued, his voice smooth as silk. "The stock prices have skyrocketed. You've already made a fortune selling off some of your shares, haven't you?"
John's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "You seem remarkably well-informed about my affairs."
Skyview chuckled. "I may not be involved in the day-to-day, but I'm not oblivious, John. A move as significant as yours... Well, let's just say ignorance is not a luxury I can afford."
"You still haven't explained what this has to do with interests," John pressed.
"Don't play coy," Skyview said, his tone laced with amusement. "You're sitting on a gold mine, billions in potential profits. If the chairman of the Twin Group gets arrested, the stock market will crash, your profits will evaporate, and you'll be staring down the barrel of billions in losses. Now, tell me, John, can you truly afford to see me imprisoned?"
Silence descended upon them, which was suffocating. Skyview had hit the nail on the head. John hadn't considered this angle before, but now, the reality was glaringly obvious. Putting Skyview behind bars meant kissing his fortune goodbye.
"Impressive," John finally conceded, a grudging respect entering his voice. "I took you for a lovesick fool, but you're shrewder than I gave you credit for."
"I never make decisions that jeopardize my interests," Skyview stated simply.
"But have you considered this?" John asked, his voice low and dangerous.
"What's that?"
"What if I'm willing to lose it all, just to see you rot in prison?"
"Firstly, you won't," Skyview said calmly. "And secondly, I have nothing to fear."
"And why is that?" John challenged.
"Money paves even the most righteous paths," Skyview said, a steely glint in his eyes. "The Twin Group is a cornerstone of Golden Isle City's economy. The authorities will compromise to protect their interests. Besides, a minor assault? I have a dozen ways to make this disappear."
"I've already accounted for your dozen ways, Skyview. You've always been a slippery one." John sighed, a hint of frustration in his voice. "It seems legal avenues are a dead end."
