Chapter 262 The Assassination Attempt on Kaelen
"Take her back," Skyview ordered, leaving no room for debate. "We need to ask her some questions."
Suzanne quickly restrained Eulalia, tying her up tight. They shoved the tiny assassin into their car and sped off to the Twin Group headquarters.
A few minutes later, they were deep inside the Twin Group building, heading to the underground lab.
The Twin Group wasn't just a business giant; it was a tech powerhouse. And anyone who knew anything about cutting-edge research knew that secrecy was key. That was why they had this underground lab, a fortress designed to protect their most sensitive projects. Its security was like a high-security bank vault—impossible to break into or out of.
The walls were soundproof, so no one outside could hear a thing. Some rooms could be sealed off completely, cutting off the air supply with just a switch. Six hours, and the oxygen would be gone, leaving anyone inside to suffocate. It was a design inspired by Evalia's own unbreakable vault, perfect for keeping secrets and prisoners.
They dragged Eulalia into an empty storage room in the lab. Here, stripped of her freedom and surrounded by her captors, the reality of her situation hit her hard.
For the first time in her bloody career, she was totally at the mercy of her enemies. They tied her up tight, silently watching her despair grow.
"Well, well. Who would've thought the infamous assassin would be such a tiny thing?" Hekka said, ruffling Eulalia's hair playfully. "You're an adult, but you look like a kid."
Eulalia stiffened at the touch. She was a mercenary. An assassin! And they were treating her like a child, patting her head like she was some kind of joke.
Humiliation burned inside her, but she swallowed it down. Bound and even unable to move her fingers, she was completely powerless to resist.
Skyview joined in, patting her head with a smirk. "Too bad you tried to kill me. Not very charming, is it?" Eulalia gritted her teeth and endured it.
"You're actually pretty cute!" Lily added, giving Eulalia's head a pat too. She had expected someone scary, intimidating. But Eulalia was no match for Suzanne. The humiliation was almost too much to handle.
Seeing everyone else join in, Suzanne couldn't resist giving Eulalia's head a pat herself. "That's enough!" Eulalia finally snapped, losing her cool. "Stop patting my head! Just stop it!"
Suzanne looked at her calmly. "What's the matter? Are you mad?"
Eulalia's defiance crumbled under Suzanne's steady gaze. She remembered all too well the raw power Suzanne had. "I'm not mad," she mumbled, forcing a smile. "Why would I be mad?"
"It doesn't matter if you're mad or not," Suzanne said flatly. "You have two choices: live or die. Your crimes are bad enough for execution. But if you want to live, you'll tell us everything. That's your only option."
"I choose to live," Eulalia said firmly, despite her situation. "But I have principles. I won't betray my client."
"Principles?" Suzanne echoed, sounding skeptical.
"I won't do it," Eulalia insisted. "Besides, haven't you already figured out who hired me?"
"We need proof," Suzanne shot back.
"I've got nothing to give," Eulalia retorted.
"Fine," Suzanne said, her voice turning icy. "Looks like we need to convince you to be more helpful." She stepped closer, her intentions clear. Eulalia braced herself, knowing resistance was pointless.
Meanwhile, over at the swanky Cascade Group hotel, Kaelen and Thelonius were tearing apart Eulalia's presidential suite. They were hunting for anything that could tie them to the assassination attempt. But after flipping the room upside down, they found zilch.
"She's too careful." Kaelen sighed, running a hand through his hair in frustration. "I was hoping to find something, anything, that could be used against us. Looks like she's covered her tracks well."
"Are you worried she'll sell us out?" Thelonius asked, his brow furrowed with concern.
"Skyview might not have much political clout, but he's loaded. His assassination won't go unnoticed. The authorities will dig into it," Kaelen said, his voice tinged with worry. "And I'm not convinced the Golden Isle City government is as clueless as some think. They might uncover our involvement. When the time comes, she will shift the blame onto us to avoid the risk."
"She's always been meticulous," Thelonius admitted. "But with her track record and our careful planning, no one could ever trace this back to us."
"True," Kaelen said, his earlier anxiety easing a bit. "Even if someone suspected us, it wouldn't be a major setback. But I'd rather not make enemies of Golden Valley's elite. Not yet, at least. I still need their support if I want to become Prime Minister of Skyscape City."
Just then, the doorbell to their suite rang. The thought that it might be Eulalia made both of them feel a bit awkward. Ransacking her room while she was away felt wrong, even if it was necessary.
"Who is it?" Thelonius called out, keeping his voice neutral.
"Room service!" a voice answered from behind the door. "Housekeeping!"
Kaelen chuckled, relieved. "Well, that's convenient. We made quite a mess searching the place. Let them clean up our handiwork."
"Indeed," Thelonius agreed, moving towards the door. He opened it to reveal a young man, his handsome features and impeccable attire a stark contrast to the mundane task he was assigned.
Both Kaelen and Thelonius were taken aback by the attendant's polished demeanor. He seemed way too refined for a job involving mops and buckets. The attendant stepped inside, his movements measured and deliberate.
"Give this room a thorough cleaning. Make it spotless, as good as new," Kaelen instructed, impressed by the young man's bearing. He pulled out a wad of cash and peeled off a thousand dollars. "Here's a little something for your trouble."
A thousand dollars was a generous tip, especially considering most hotel staff probably didn't even make four thousand a month.
"Thank you, sir," the attendant replied politely, setting down his cleaning supplies. But instead of taking the money, he reached into his pocket.
Kaelen froze, a sense of unease washing over him. Something was off. No room service attendant would refuse such a hefty tip.
"Something's wrong!" Thelonius shouted, his instincts screaming at him. "Kaelen, get down!" He lunged for Kaelen, tackling him to the ground just as the attendant pulled out a handgun, aiming for Kaelen's chest. The bullet missed its mark thanks to Thelonius's quick thinking, but not by much. It grazed Kaelen's ribs, drawing a sharp gasp of pain as blood bloomed on his shirt.
