Chapter 268 Don't Say I Didn't Warn You
Kaelen just stood there, silent, feeling the weight of Skyview's words. He'd totally underestimated his enemy, thinking Skyview was just some rich idiot who could be easily taken out. He was completely wrong.
Skyview had a point. They were in a whole new ballgame now, where money was power. And even though Skyview was hurt, he still had a ton of cash to throw around.
Losing Thelonius stung. And the fear, that icy dread when Raymond's bullet tore through him, was something Kaelen wouldn't forget anytime soon. He'd been inches from death, saved only by a lucky twist of fate—a tag deflecting the bullet.
Skyview, not bothered by Kaelen's silence, kept talking, his voice low and menacing. "You thought I was weak, alone. An easy target. You thought you could take down my empire by taking me out."
"But you were wrong, Kaelen. This isn't some medieval game of thrones. This is capitalism, and money rules. Five billion dollars might be a scratch to you, but it's still a weapon, and I know how to use it."
"This little show? Just a taste of what you're up against. Try me again, Kaelen, and I promise you, the outcome won't be so forgiving."
The line went dead.
"Skyview! SKYVIEW!" Kaelen roared, throwing the phone against the wall, the expensive device shattering into pieces.
Rage and fear battled in his chest. He'd been outplayed, outgunned. Skyview had made his point in the most brutal way possible. He had no choice but to back down. For now.
Skyview hung up, letting out a tired sigh. A small, vindictive part of him wished Kaelen had paid the ultimate price.
"He's lucky to be alive," Hekka said, a hint of disappointment in her voice.
"Alive, but wounded," Skyview replied, a wry smile on his lips. "I could hear the fear in his voice. He won't be making any more moves against me. Not as long as I have a single dollar to my name."
"I'll look into it," Hekka said, her eyes gleaming with a predatory light. "Make sure he's as hurt as you think."
"And there's something else," Skyview said, his voice turning calculating. "I need you to plant a seed of doubt in John's mind. Something about Hilda, her involvement in all of this. Make it subtle, like a whisper in the wind. I want to see how he reacts."
"Consider it done," Hekka said, a sly smile spreading across her face. "Anything else, boss?"
"Get some rest, Hekka," Skyview said, genuine concern in his voice. "You've earned it."
"Always a pleasure to be of service," Hekka said, her smile widening before she turned and slipped out of the room, leaving Skyview to his thoughts.
He was exhausted, the adrenaline that had kept him going for the past few days finally wearing off, leaving him drained. But sleep wouldn't come easy. Not tonight.
The news the next day was a mixed bag. Kaelen was alive, his injuries serious but not life-threatening. A bullet to the ribs, a harsh reminder of his mortality. Thelonius, though, hadn't been so lucky. Six bullets, each one a testament to Skyview's ruthlessness.
Skyview allowed himself a moment of grim satisfaction. One less enemy to worry about. John Davis walked into Hilda's room, his heart heavy with concern and disappointment.
Hilda sat by the window, a half-empty bottle of wine on the table beside him, staring out at the city below. He looked defeated.
The news of the failed assassination attempt and Eulalia's capture hit him hard. Knowing that Kaelen had been wounded too only deepened his despair. It was a twisted comfort knowing even Kaelen wasn't invincible, but it did little to ease his turmoil.
"Hilda," John said softly, his voice full of concern. "You can't let this break you. It's just... it's just a setback." He knew his words were inadequate, but he couldn't stand seeing him like this, drowning in self-pity and regret.
