Chapter 106

Before he could finish, I interjected, "That's quite a question!"

I looked at Lucy. "Move to the south city. The environment there is good, and public safety is also fine. Most importantly, it's close to the company, and it would be convenient for you to take care of Brooke."

"No need, don't listen to his nonsense!" Lucy said.

She glared fiercely at Dennis.

I held her hand; whether she was using me as a shield or not, at least the show had to go on. On the way here, I had already planned this out. Even if Dennis didn't bring it up, I was going to persuade her to leave the north city.

Come on, a beauty like her would attract attention just walking down the street. If something happened in the north end of the city, wouldn't I be at a loss?

"Even if not for yourself or Dennis, think about Brooke. The environment here is really bad," I tried to persuade Lucy.

I squeezed her hand. "You don't have to worry about anything else; I'll take care of it all!"

She hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "Okay, I'll listen to you!"

Seeing Lucy nod, Dennis was ecstatic. "Brother-in-law, you're amazing! Mom, did you hear that? We're leaving this broken place."

Brooke didn't say anything but sighed heavily.

I quickly reassured her, "It's the least I should do. Since I'm with Lucy, I have to take responsibility with her."

As I said this, I even believed it myself.

"Ah, good child, I didn't misjudge you." Brooke's face lit up with a smile again.

It was better to deal with this now than later. I said, "Lucy and I will go find a house now. Once we find one we like, we'll move in this afternoon!"

"Brother-in-law, take me with you; I want to go too!" Dennis exclaimed.

"Go where? If you go, who will take care of Mom?"

Lucy glared at him, and he wilted. "Alright, then, make sure to find a big and luxurious house."

I nodded and led Lucy away.

As we stepped out, I breathed a sigh of relief. Getting into the car, Lucy said, "I'm sorry. My brother is immature. Don't take it to heart."

"Come on, why would I bother with a kid like him."

I chuckled and drove off.

"Before my dad had his problems, he lived a life where everything was served on a silver platter. But since my dad's troubles started, he's just given up on everything. Throw in a car accident, and he quit school. He's just not the same guy anymore."

I wanted to pat her back but ended up patting her thigh instead. The amazing feeling and elasticity made my heart tingle. "It's okay; things are looking up now, right?"

"It's not that things are looking up; it's that you're here."

Lucy looked at me with curiosity. "John, I never expected that it would be you, the most inconspicuous one, who would lift me up from the abyss. Why didn't I talk to you more before?"

"It's never too late."

I smirked, my hand still lingering, gently caressing her. "Was what you said in front of your mom and brother true or not?"

Her face turned red. "Not!"

"Oh, so I'm still your shield."

"I... can give you a chance to pursue me, but you have to pursue me openly, no sneaky tactics."

"What do you mean by sneaky tactics?"

She said, "Don't do it through my mom and brother! My mom taught me to be faithful and consistent since I was young. That's why I haven't dated in all these years. As for my brother, you can see..."

I interjected, "If I do something with you, he will guard outside, right?"

"What do you mean by 'guard'? What do you think I am?" she snapped.

"Classmate or girlfriend, it depends on how you want me to treat you!"

"Friend, for now, we can only be friends." She huffed.

"So we're just friends, huh? Then I'll mobilize my future mother-in-law and brother-in-law to help me win you over."

"What do you mean for!" She smacked my hand, but didn't move it away. "Do you think you're playing a game?"

I lightly caressed her thigh. "Life is just a game, like a dream. If we have to put it that way, then you're the final boss of this game. Only by conquering you can this game be complete!"

"Are you trying to sweet-talk me?"

"What do you think?"

"So cheesy!"

She turned her head to the side, firmly pressing down her skirt with one hand, not letting me proceed.

But I was quite satisfied with this. It was bliss!

I had finally fulfilled my cheeky little dream of cruising in a fancy car while getting handsy with a gorgeous lady's thigh.

We found a real estate agency close to the company, looked at a few houses, and finally found a suitable one in a mid-range community called "Bright Garden."

Three bedrooms, two living rooms, one kitchen, one bathroom, 1200 square feet, fully furnished. The owner used to live here but went abroad for development this year, so they decided to rent out the house.

The furniture inside was complete, the floor was relatively high, and you could see HT Plaza from the balcony.

However, the rent was quite high, 4.5 grand a month.

Lucy said, "So expensive; should we look for another place?"

South City wasn't bustling, and the rent was indeed on the pricier side. It generally ranged from 2 to 3 grand.

"No, let's stick with this one. It's close to the company, convenient for commuting, and has complete living facilities. With you living here, I can rest assured!"

Back in the day, she wouldn't even blink at a monthly paycheck of 50 grand, much less a measly five grand.

I swiped my card directly and paid a year's rent; over 50 grand gone just like that.

But winning Lucy's heart made it all worth it.

The agent happily handed me the keys and left.

"John, thank you!" Lucy said gratefully.

"For what? I'm lending this money to you."

I waved it off, knowing she was strong-willed and didn't want to make her uncomfortable by offering anything. That would only upset her.

"And there will be interest to pay," I added.

"How much do you plan to charge?" She bit her lip.

I stroked my chin. "I think your skills are pretty good, so..."

Her face blushed bright red; she stomped her foot and said, "You jerk, you rogue!"

Although Lucy said so verbally, it was only natural to repay debts and to collect interest.

She came over with a blush on her face...

In doing such things, there could only be zero times and countless times.

Lucy's feelings towards me were complex.

In fact, even if I took her now, she wouldn't say anything, but to truly win her heart, that was definitely impossible.

Despite the decline in her family's fortunes, as a former young lady, she retained her pride.

Good tea needed to be brewed slowly and savored bit by bit. I had to use gentle traps, lure her in, and then let her sink in, never to escape for a lifetime.

Her face was crimson, a mix of shyness and panic.
