Chapter 400
The man picked up something and chucked it at me, nailing my arm and sending a jolt of pain through me.
"John!" Edward was fuming too. "Don't push it!"
He stormed over, pointing at the man. "If you lay a finger on me today, I swear, you'll regret it!"
His words left everyone around us in shock.
But the crowd just murmured among themselves.
"Outsiders. This is Greenvale City. Threatening Gideon Ashford here is asking for trouble."
"Everyone knows EarthStrike Minerals backs Gideon. He's got serious connections!"
I clutched my arm, frowning. 'Are Gideon's backers the Roberts family? If so, then I'm not scared!'
"Edward, let me handle this." I grabbed Edward's hand. "Your name's Gideon, right?"
"You think you can just say my name?" Gideon snapped. "Do you believe I'll kill you?"
"Go ahead, I'm right here. You better kill me, or you'll be the one regretting it." I narrowed my eyes. "Do you believe I can make you apologize with just one phone call?"
Gideon was taken aback for a second, then burst out laughing, and so did the crowd. "Where did this idiot come from, trying to act tough?"
Gideon laughed so hard he had tears in his eyes. "Alright, I want to see how you make me apologize with one phone call!"
I didn't say anything, just pulled out my phone and dialed Alaric's number. "Yeah, I've got a bit of a situation here. Are you sure you want to come over? Won't it be too much trouble? Alright then, I'll wait for you here. Thanks!"
After hanging up, I looked at Gideon. "Gideon, Alaric will be here soon. You better think about how to explain yourself!"
Gideon laughed. "Let's see how you get Alaric here."
The crowd looked at me like I was a joke.
"Just wait."
Edward tugged at my hand from behind. "John, who is this Alaric you're talking about?"
"I'll explain later."
About ten minutes later, Gideon was getting impatient. "Are you messing with me? Guys, teach him a lesson so he knows what happens when he messes with me."
The men around him were ready to charge at me.
Just then, the sound of screeching brakes filled the air, and a young man got out of the car. "Gideon, if you dare touch him, you won't see the light of day tomorrow!"
Hearing this, Gideon didn't even think before snapping back, "Who do you think you are?"
Before he could finish, the crowd started to panic.
"Alaric!"
"It's really Alaric!"
Gasps rose from the crowd, and they parted to make way.
Seeing Alaric, I smiled and walked over. "Sorry to trouble you, Alaric!"
Alaric extended his hand. "I should be the one apologizing for not keeping my people in check!"
Gideon was stunned and nervously asked, "Alaric, why are you here? Do you really know him?"
"You're asking for it!" With that, the men behind him rushed over, grabbed Gideon's hand, and started beating him.
Soon, Gideon was a mess.
The bodyguards nearby were too scared to speak. In front of the real boss, Gideon was nothing!
"Get on your knees and apologize!" Alaric said coldly.
Gideon's legs gave out, and he dropped to his knees. "I'm sorry!"
"Since you didn't understand the situation, keep hitting him until he does!" Alaric said coldly, "The Roberts family doesn't need such unruly subordinates!"
The men slapped him again, making him look even worse.
The crowd was too scared to speak, all terrified of Alaric.
Edward tugged at my hand, astonished. "Who is Alaric?"
"I'll fill you in later." I grinned. I didn't feel an ounce of pity for Gideon; he had it coming.
"Alaric, stop! I know I messed up!"
Alaric waved his hand, and his guys immediately stopped. By now, Gideon's mouth was full of blood, two of his molars were gone, and his face was so swollen he could barely open his eyes.
He stumbled over to me, dropping to his knees. "John, I was wrong. I treated you badly. Please, forgive me!"
I said coolly, "You shouldn't be saying this to me."
He struggled to lift his head and looked at Edward. "Mr. Walker, I was wrong. I apologize to you. Please don't hold it against me."
Edward frowned. "Then, mind your behavior."
"John, are you satisfied?" Alaric asked with a faint smile.
I cupped my hands. "Thanks, Alaric!"
Alaric waved it off. "I should be thanking you for helping me find this troublemaker. If he kept acting like this, he could've caused big problems for the Roberts family."
Hearing this, I was taken aback for a moment, then nodded.
I thought, 'These big family folks are really cautious. In Greenvale City, there are a lot of powerful people. Someone as reckless as Gideon could definitely tick off the wrong person.'
Alaric said, "I've got other things to handle, so I won't stay long. I'll treat you next time."
"Take care, Alaric."
Alaric nodded andglanced at Gideon on the ground. "Take him away. Don't embarrass us here."
Then his men dragged Gideon away like a dead dog.
After Alaric left with Gideon, the others looked at us with mixed expressions.
Soon, a bunch of people came up to chat.
"Mr. Cena, I'd like to be friends with you."
"Mr. Walker, your speech just now was very impressive."
I wasn't interested in these people, but Edward might find them useful.
Half an hour later, we finally got away.
In the car, Edward wiped his sweat and said, "John, you're amazing. You handled him with just one phone call."
I smiled. "It was just luck. I happened to know his boss."
"By the way, who is this Alaric?" Edward asked. "It seems like everyone is afraid of him."
"You know the Roberts family, right?"
"Of course, they're one of the top wealthy families in the country."
"Wait, are you saying that Alaric is from the Roberts family?"
"That's right, he's from the Roberts family."
Edward was shocked. "How do you know someone like that?"
"It's a long story. I'll tell you when I get the chance."
"Tell me now!"
I smiled and didn't hold back, giving him a rough rundown. He sighed. "I knew you weren't an ordinary person. You've only been in Greenvale City for a few days and already made such a big impact!"
"You've successfully integrated into Greenvale City's social circle, one of the top social circles in the country."
He sighed. "Compared to you, I suddenly feel like my achievements are nothing."
"Edward, without you, I wouldn't be where I am today."
"You earned it through your own hard work." Edward said with great emotion, "Some people are born to do great things. They just need an opportunity. You seized the opportunity and moved forward step by step. Maybe in a year or two, I won't even be qualified to ride in the same car as you."
"No matter what happens in the future, you'll always be my brother. That's a fact that can't be changed."
"True." Edward nodded with a smile.
I smiled, thinking, 'Two months ago, I was just an ordinary guy. Slowly, I became wealthy in two months. And as of today, my assets have barely reached a billion dollars. Maybe the next step to having ten billion dollars in assets isn't far off.'
