Chapter 414

She raised her hand to slap me, but stopped halfway. "Let go of me. I need some time to cool off. Don't worry, I won't do anything about the child. Even if we're not together, I won't let my child be in danger."

"Really?"

I looked at her, her face blank and eyes cold. Bitterness filled my mouth as I let her go.

She left without a backward glance. I wanted to chase after her, but my feet wouldn't move.

I slapped myself hard. Another girl's heart broken. "John, you're such a jerk," I muttered.

Watching Amelia get into the car, I knew I had to deal with this mess with Steven.

Whether Amelia stays with me or not, I won't let her be in danger.

I called Ava, and a car showed up a few minutes later. "Let's go to Skyliho Group."

Soon, we pulled up in front of the company building.

When I got to the marketing department, I hesitated. I hadn't been here in over a month, and it felt strange.

I walked in, looking around. Lots of new faces, but I spotted Lily right away.

She was at her desk, staring blankly. She looked so different from a month ago.

She'd lost weight. Her once curvy figure now seemed as light as a feather.

Seeing her like this, a pang of heartache hit me.

I wondered what had happened to her.

"Excuse me, could you move your feet?"

A voice came from behind me. I turned around and saw it was Paul!

Seeing me, Paul looked happy, but then he lowered his head and kept mopping the floor, looking really down.

Paul was in a janitor's uniform, and anyone could boss him around.

Lucas really did a number on him. I felt no sympathy. If he couldn't stand it, he could always quit.

Just then, Lily saw me. "John, you're back?"

She stood up, quickly tidying her slightly messy hair, and smiled. "Long time no see!"

I sighed. "Long time no see!"

"Are you here to see me? I'm pretty free right now. Want to chat?"

There was a hopeful look in her eyes.

"No, I'm here to see Ms. Smith."

A flash of disappointment crossed her eyes. "Ms. Smith is in her office."

I nodded. "Thanks!"

After a couple of steps, I stopped and said, "Are you free at noon? I'd like to treat you to lunch."

A smile appeared on her face, and she nodded eagerly. "I'm free!"

"Great, I'll meet you at Crystal Cove Club!"

When I reached Jenny's office door, I knocked. Jenny's voice came from inside, "Come in."

I pushed the door open and walked in. Jenny, dressed in professional attire, was working at her desk.

I hadn't seen her in over a month, and she looked much more worn out. Her outfit couldn't hide the fatigue in her eyes.

"Ms. Smith, long time no see!"

"John, what are you doing here?" Jenny frowned. "Weren't you in Greenvale City?"

"Yeah, I just got back yesterday. Aren't you going to invite me to sit?"

"I'm busy. If you have something to say, just say it." She was cold, the warmth from before completely gone.

I got straight to the point. "Are you getting engaged at the end of the month? Can you not get engaged?"

Jenny looked at me calmly. "If that's all you came to say, you can leave now!"

Her attitude made me a bit angry, but I didn't dare to show it. "Are you really going to marry him? Do you want to go through that again?"

"John, this is my business. It has nothing to do with you."

Jenny said coldly, "Please leave my office. If you want to discuss work, you're welcome. But if it's about this nonsense, don't bother."

I really wanted to open her head and see what she was thinking. "Why have we become like this?"

"Get out!"

Jenny's eyes grew colder. "Don't make me call security."

I lost my cool and plopped down on the sofa. "Go ahead, call them! I messed up, but you gotta give me a chance to fix it."

I decided to lay it all out. "I'm Troy and also John. The Jenny I know isn't like this. If you want to punish me, you've succeeded. I can't eat or sleep well. This whole thing is like a thorn in my throat. Sometimes, I wake up in the middle of the night from a nightmare of you getting engaged to Joseph."

"I don't know what you're talking about. Please leave!"

Jenny tried hard to keep her cool, but her breathing was all over the place.

"No, you know!"

I walked up to her, placed my hands on her desk, and stared straight into her eyes. "I came back to settle this once and for all. If you insist on getting engaged to Joseph, I will definitely ruin it. The Garcia family won't dominate Sevan City!"

Her face changed instantly. "What are you planning to do? Don't do anything stupid."

"You're getting engaged to Joseph, and you tell me not to do anything rash?" I gritted my teeth. "I can handle anything in this life, but I can't be cheated on!"

With that, I turned to leave.

"John, stop right there!"

I stopped, and Jenny walked over. "If you want me to hate you, show up on my engagement day. That's all I have to say. Do as you please!"

"Hate me if you want. I just want a clear conscience. If the Garcia family tries to mess with you, I won't let them off!"

"John, you jerk! Stop."

Jenny's frustrated voice echoed behind me, but I didn't look back and left the office with big strides.

As soon as I left the marketing department, Paul called out to me. "John, wait! Got time to chat?"

I nodded and headed to the fire escape. He handed me a cigarette. "I heard you got transferred to Greenvale City to manage the branch?"

"Yeah!" I nodded. After smoking too many cigars, this cheap cigarette felt rough.

Paul sighed. "You're really moving up in the world. As for me, I'm getting worse."

I asked knowingly, "Why are you working as a janitor?"

He sighed deeply. "I offended someone."

"Who?"

"Lucas from the project department."

He slowly exhaled a puff of smoke. "John, can you help me? If not, can you take me to Greenvale City? I really don't want to stay in the janitorial department anymore."

I thought, 'Take you to Greenvale City? With someone like you, how could I dare?'

I smiled. "I'll mention it to Lucas. I can't promise anything."

Paul looked delighted. "That would be great. Lucas will definitely let me go for your sake. Let's leave it at that. I'm heading upstairs."

The gap between Paul and me was too wide. I didn't even have the desire to take revenge on him anymore.

After going upstairs, I returned to my office, but Amelia was gone. In a daze, I seemed to see Amelia smiling and throwing herself into my arms.

Just then, Charlotte knocked and came in. "John, Mr. Walton is looking for you."

I was taken aback. Why was Steven at the company?

Didn't Katherine say he wouldn't come until he recovered?

I felt uneasy as I went to the chairman's office. Steven was sitting there. "You're here, have a seat!"

I nodded and sat across from him. He poured me a cup of tea. "Did you sleep well last night?"

I said, "Thank you for your concern, Mr. Walton. I slept very well."

"That's good!" Steven smiled gently, a stark contrast to last night.

He raised his teacup. "Thank you for your hard work in Greenvale City. A toast you."

"Mr. Walton, you're too kind. It's my duty."

I was secretly on guard. Steven must be planning something bad again.

"By the way, what was the background of that girl you mentioned from Greenvale City last night?" Steven asked.
