Chapter 399
"Don't sweat it, just drop me your location!" Edward said.
Lauren let out a big sigh of relief, her body relaxing as she said, "Never mind, I'll call John. We'll come get you! Gotta go!"
She then pinched my waist. "Is this what you wanted?"
That line was something I taught her.
I faked a wince. "Edward's coming, I can't just act like I don't know, right?"
"If Edward finds out you're messing with his girl, you think he'll still see you as his brother?" Lauren teased, looking incredibly alluring.
I picked up the pace, finishing with her. Afterward, I said, "Let's roll!"
"Aren't we gonna clean up?"
"No time, let's move!"
Half an hour later, we got to Greenvale City Airport. Lauren was walking a bit funny. "This is all your fault. Stop laughing! You made it so I can't even walk straight."
I chuckled and headed into the waiting area, spotting Edward.
"Edward!" I quickly walked over and hugged him.
"John, it's been almost a month, and you're already causing a ruckus in Greenvale City. You've lost weight and grown up." He patted my shoulder, looking pleased.
I scratched my head. "Edward, I'm sorry. Today was the company's grand opening, and I got drunk. Lauren came to my place and told me you were here."
"It's all good!" Edward shook his head with a smile and looked at Lauren warmly. "Lauren, long time no see. How've you been?"
Lauren had composed herself. "With John taking care of me, I'm doing well."
On the way to the hotel, I asked, "Edward, what brings you to Greenvale City this time?"
Edward sighed, "I'm here mainly for a conference and to expand some channels in Greenvale City."
Even though Sevan City was gearing up to be a first-tier city, progress was slow, and the manufacturing sector was struggling.
Performance was improving, but profits were getting squeezed.
"Alright, if you need anything, hit me up. I know some people in Greenvale City."
Edward smiled but didn't seem to take it seriously. "Sure thing!"
After dropping him off at the Sparkling Starlight Hotel, Lauren and I were about to leave when Edward called me back, "John, it's been a while. Can we talk?"
I glanced at Lauren, and she sensibly said, "I'm heading back to Sevan City early tomorrow. I'll go first."
After she left, I went to Edward's room. "What's up, Edward?"
"What else could it be?" Edward said, "You know I've been chasing Lauren, but it's been so long, and she hasn't agreed. I'm really worried."
"Maybe Lauren is still testing you," I said, not really meaning it.
"Really?" He looked skeptical. "I feel like something's off with her lately. She seems different inside and out. And when I called her earlier, I heard some strange noises!"
I was startled but kept my cool, "What kind of noises?"
He looked troubled. "How do I explain it? The sound felt weird to me. I suspect she has someone else."
"No way!" I put on a surprised face. "Lauren's at work every day, surrounded by colleagues. She finishes late, and there's no other guy around."
"Really?" Edward frowned. "Could it be one of your colleagues?"
"Impossible!" I denied it immediately. "Lauren just got here, and she's not familiar with the colleagues in Greenvale City. Plus, the workers she brought are all unattractive. You don't think Lauren would be into them, do you?"
"True, maybe I misheard?"
I said, "You definitely misheard. You know what kind of person Lauren is. If she had someone she liked, she wouldn't hide it."
He looked embarrassed. "I misunderstood."
I secretly swallowed, thinking, 'It's not a misunderstanding; it's true. I was right there when you called!'
Even though I felt a bit guilty, he couldn't force feelings.
"Edward, I think you should have a good talk with Lauren. It's better to clear things up face-to-face rather than becoming enemies in the end."
"You're right." Edward smiled bitterly. "But the problem is, she doesn't give me a chance to meet alone."
"Take it slow."
After chatting with him for a while at the hotel, I headed back to the apartment. Linda and Stella were already asleep.
That night, I crashed on the couch.
Early the next morning, I moved Linda and Stella to the villa.
It wasn't much of a move since we didn't have a lot of stuff.
"So luxurious!" Stella said, "It's even more luxurious than Golden Sunset Estates in Sevan City."
I nodded. "The owner is an artist who spends most of the time abroad for art exchanges, so the house is vacant. That's how we managed to rent it."
I had arranged for a cleaning company to tidy up yesterday, so we could move in right away.
The villa was fully decked out with a pool, home theater, and game room.
Stella immediately put on a bikini and jumped in the pool, "Linda, come down!"
Linda looked at me. "Help me with my clothes!"
"Coming!"
As long as I was around, Linda and Stella usually had me serve them.
Since Linda got pregnant, her body seemed to become more voluptuous than before.
Her underwear size even went up a notch.
Worried about them getting cramps, I joined them in the water.
The water was changed yesterday, very clean. As we washed, I got excited.
Stella blushed. "John, I'm warning you, don't mess around. If you hurt my daughter, you'll be in big trouble."
I laughed helplessly and moved away from her. Linda also said calmly, "If you dare touch me, I won't forgive you!"
I immediately felt scared.
These two women were too ruthless.
If I had known, I should have gotten up earlier to see Lauren off at the airport. Maybe I could have spent more time with her.
Just then, my phone rang. It was Edward calling. "What's up, Edward?"
Edward's troubled voice came through the phone, "John, can you come over? I'm in trouble."
"Don't worry, I'm on my way."
After hanging up, I told Linda and Stella, "I have an urgent matter to attend to. I have to go."
With that, I hurriedly left.
I took a cab to the National Manufacturing Conference.
As soon as I entered, I saw a crowd gathered.
I squeezed in and saw Edward surrounded by several big guys.
"Edward!" I called out, and Edward looked happy to see me, "John!"
"What happened?"
Edward looked helpless. "During the meeting, I accidentally spilled water on him. I apologized and compensated him, but he still won't let it go!"
The man said, "If you get on your knees and apologize, this matter will be over. Otherwise, you won't leave Greenvale City in one piece today!"
The man, around forty, wore a suit, a gold watch, and a thick gold chain around his neck. He looked wealthy.
I frowned. "Aren't you being too much? We're all in business; there's no need to go this far."
I thought, 'This is Greenvale City. If it were Sevan City, Edward could have dealt with him.'
But he was clearly a local. Going against him on his turf would only lead to trouble.
"What does this have to do with you? Are you his helper?" The man sneered, "I'm telling you, you'd better stay out of this, or you'll get beaten too!"
I was also angry. "I respect you, but don't go too far. Everyone here is wealthy and influential. If it comes to a fight, I'm not afraid!"
The man shouted, "You dare threaten me?"
