Chapter 382
This island got sea snakes, and they were either harmless or super deadly with no cure in sight.
Seeing Cassandra's pale face, I softened up and said, "I'm sorry!"
Cassandra seemed to get what I was about to do. She blushed and lay flat on the sand. I bent down and leaned in.
Cassandra's forehead was sweating from the pain; her skin was really delicate.
I didn't have many other thoughts in my mind. She'd been locked in that water dungeon all night, and then we floated on the sea for another night. The smell of seawater mixed with corpse water almost made me puke.
When I couldn't suck out any more blood, I finally let go.
Just for the convenience of sucking out the venom, she was only in her underwear.
I wiped my mouth and said, "I've done all I can. I hope you'll be okay."
Cassandra nodded. "John, thank you for saving me." Her eyes were full of gratitude.
I sighed and thought to myself that we were in this together. I pointed to her shoulder and asked, "Are you okay?"
Cassandra took off her clothes, revealing a black bra. The white gauze had already turned pink.
The gauze definitely couldn't be used again. Even if it were to be reused, it would need to be boiled and dried first.
"Let me take a look!" I untied the gauze on her shoulder. The wound was infected. If not treated in time, she would surely die on this island.
I took out everything from my bag: a bottle of water, a few pieces of bread. She had already taken all the antibiotics yesterday. These few things wouldn't sustain us for long.
Looking at the vast ocean, I had no idea when rescue would come. The only satellite phone was useless.
Before rescue arrived, I had to find clean drinking water and make a fire. The temperature at night on the island was very low. If I caught a cold, the situation would get worse.
I communicated with Cassandra for a long time. She barely understood my meaning. "John, I'll go with you to find a water source."
I shook my head. "You rest here and keep an eye out for any passing ships. Freshwater isn't urgent for now; there are coconut trees by the shore, so we won't dehydrate."
But I thought, 'There weren't many coconut trees. What if no ships passed by for many days?'
"Okay!" Cassandra nodded.
I didn't dare to go too far, fearing that Cassandra's snake venom would act up. I circled around, gathered a few coconuts, and returned.
To my surprise, Cassandra had managed to start a fire.
I was overjoyed. With fire, we could keep warm, cook food, and even signal for help. I couldn't help but hug her. "How did you do it?"
Cassandra blushed slightly, took out the dismantled satellite phone, and pointed to the half-burnt lithium battery. I understood.
The satellite phone was useless anyway. I couldn't exactly call Lincoln and ask him to come kill me. His three henchmen were probably dead too.
Cassandra said, "John, I'm sorry."
I waved my hand to interrupt, "We're in this situation; the phone is useless."
Her face relaxed a bit. I asked, "Is the snake bite okay?"
Cassandra nodded. "It should be a non-venomous sea snake."
"That's good." I gathered some large stones and built a triangular fire pit. Then I opened the coconuts and ate the juice and pulp. I found a freshwater source in the woods and boiled the gauze.
As for her infected wound, I had no other options but to hope for her body's resistance and immunity.
Two days flew by in a haze. Last night, Cassandra spiked a fever and even passed out.
I stayed by her side, wiping her down with warm water. In this situation, nothing else mattered; keeping her alive was the top priority.
Looking at her infected wound, I knew if it kept spreading, she wouldn't make it.
I made up my mind, took a piece of iron I found on the beach, sharpened it by friction, and repeatedly burned it for sterilization. "Cassandra, I need to use this iron piece to cut out the infected area. It's gonna hurt a lot. The wound might get worse tonight, and you could die, or it might get better. Do you want to try?"
Cassandra nodded drowsily. "John, I trust you!"
I took a deep breath to calm myself.
The sharp iron piece easily cut through her skin. Cassandra frowned and let out a slight cry of pain. Blood from the infected area immediately flowed.
Cassandra looked terrible. I whispered in her ear, "Hang in there, Cassandra. You must hold on!"
After treating the wound, it didn't look as scary as before. I wrapped the sterilized bandage around her wound and kept giving her coconut water.
Another sleepless night passed. Fortunately, her fever broke in the second half of the night. Although her face was still pale, it wasn't as frightening as before.
I finally relaxed. I had never taken care of someone so meticulously. If she couldn't survive this, it would be her bad luck.
When dawn broke the next day, I couldn't help but fall into a deep sleep. By noon, I was awakened by a gentle voice. "John, John."
I groggily opened my eyes and saw Cassandra cooking a large crab. The enticing aroma made me feel like I was on a beach vacation.
"John, it's ready!" She happily brought the large crab to me, opened the shell, and offered the most succulent crab roe to my mouth.
"Did you go into the sea?" I felt a headache. This woman, how could she be so reckless? I had just saved her, and if her wound got infected again, no one could save her.
"No." Cassandra shook her head and quickly explained, "I caught it by the shore."
Hearing this, I finally relaxed. "You're the patient; you should eat more. I'll go catch some lobsters!"
I grabbed the spear I made and jumped into the sea. This time, I was lucky and caught a large lobster.
Thanks to the abundant marine life here, we had enough nutrition. Otherwise, Cassandra wouldn't have made it.
After eating, Cassandra knelt in front of me and said seriously, "John, from today on, my life is yours. I swear to God, I will serve you forever. If I break this vow, I will die a terrible death."
I was shocked and quickly helped her up. "Get up!"
Cassandra stubbornly said, "If you don't agree, I won't get up!"
I felt helpless. People from Crystal Nation were so stubborn; once they made up their minds, no one could change it. "Okay, whatever you say. Now get up."
Cassandra finally smiled. "From now on, I'm yours. We should take care of each other."
I thought, 'Once you return to Crystal Nation and I go back to Simbara, we won't have the chance to take care of each other.'
Cassandra stood up and said, "John, we can make more noticeable distress signals around the nearby coasts."
I nodded. We had been at sea for three days and needed to get back soon. I couldn't imagine what chaos awaited at home.
I spent a day making large distress signals around the island, with signal smoke burning 24/7. Any passing ship would surely notice us.
