Chapter 243
"Maybe I'm just lucky," I said with a grin.
"When did this happen? Why didn't I know?" Katherine asked.
"I've got money, but I can't just go around talking about it," I replied.
"No way. That money didn't come from winning the lottery," Katherine said. "If there was news about a jackpot over twenty million dollars, it would've been all over the place! Show me the transfer records, then I'll believe you."
Katherine was sharp and loved digging deep.
"Too much hassle. Anyway, it is the lottery money. Just know I'm not lying."
I snatched the phone away.
Katherine said, "I never expected to have a multi-millionaire hiding right next to me. You've been good at keeping secrets, making more money than I have all these years."
"Lucky, just lucky," I said.
Katherine asked, "If this hadn't come up, you would've kept it from me, right?"
"Not necessarily," I said. "When I reach the level you admire, I'll tell you one day, then convince you, make you admit you're my lover!"
"You're very shrewd," Katherine said.
"Is this considered scheming too?" I asked.
She said, "No wonder you act so differently at the company, even daring to meddle in Jenny Smith's business. Turns out you're rich now."
"My involvement in things has little to do with whether I'm rich or not," I said. "Before I told you those things, I didn't have money."
"So, that's why I say you're very lecherous!" Katherine looked at me disdainfully. "Does that mean you don't need me anymore, I can't help you?"
"I still need your help," I said.
"Are you really willing?" Katherine asked.
"I am," I said, looking at her earnestly.
She suddenly smiled. "This is your choice. If you end up losing everything, don't blame me for not warning you."
"Will you?" I asked.
"Not necessarily," Katherine said.
"You won't. I know you're not that kind of person. If you really wanted to harm someone, you wouldn't be living so hard. I didn't know before, but now I do. I'll do my best to help you. I also hope you try to trust me, and please believe me, everyone will harm you, but I won't!"
"John!"
Katherine's eyes were like water, and the next moment, she wrapped her arms around my neck and kissed me.
This kiss was more sincere than all her previous kisses.
After a while, we ended the kiss.
"Have sex with me!"
"But..."
" Are you not interested?"
"But I just feel..."
"I don't care what you feel about, just listen to me!"
She straddled my lap. "You can clearly feel it, so why restrain yourself? Isn't this body of mine worth driving you wild?"
I swallowed hard. "Your attraction to me is deadly."
"Then why not have sex with me?"
Katherine's red lips kissed my face, and I struggled intensely in my heart.
Hesitating whether to have sex with her.
I was having a hard time making a decision!
Honestly, if it was just for release, it would be fine.
But now things were complicated. Once I had sex with her, I would have to take responsibility.
It's not that I'm unwilling to take responsibility, but at this moment she was in a dangerous situation, and I had just helped her...
"Because you haven't fallen in love with me yet," I said.
Katherine was stunned. "Love?"
"Yes!" I continued, "I didn't feel love from your kiss, more like desire and fear of the future. In that case, I would feel like we're just completing a transaction, and that's not what I want."
She fell silent for a while. "Someone like me can't fall in love with others."
"Of course, I like you, and I hope you like me too, not just for physical intimacy," I said.
"John, you're really something else," she said, looking at me. "You have flaws like any other guy, but there's something about you. Maybe you're playing hard to get, but you've touched me."
"Would you like to be my friend?"
"We already are friends."
I was surprised. I thought I was easing her into the idea, but she was already on the same page.
"Can I stay at your place tonight?" I asked.
"The driver can't, but a friend can!"
She laughed, and I laughed too.
I picked her up and carried her into the bedroom. We only came out the next morning.
Don't get the wrong idea—there was no sex, just kissing.
But when I woke up, she still complained. When we left, she turned back into the cold deputy general manager and warned me multiple times to respect her outside.
I got what she meant. In private, we could be more relaxed, even flirt like a couple.
But now, it wasn't even dawn yet. Where were we going?
"Ms. Bailey, where are we headed?" I asked.
"West City, TF Homeland Community," Katherine replied.
What?
I instantly sobered up. Why there?
Wasn't that her secret spot with Steven?
I had a bad feeling. Steven must be there too.
Was Katherine planning to meet Steven this early?
I felt like she was about to cheat!
"Ms. Bailey, what are we doing there?"
"Don't ask what you shouldn't ask," Katherine said, looking out the window. "What I want to say, I'll tell you even if you don't ask."
"Okay." I nodded, but my mood soured.
I felt so frustrated.
She had slept in my arms last night, but now she was going back to another man's embrace. I really wanted to ask her, "How did Steven threaten you?"
But I couldn't. If I did, I'd expose everything.
Katherine, being as sharp as she was, would figure it out.
I deliberately drove slowly, but even at this pace, we'd soon arrive.
As the car smoothly entered the underground garage, I planned to go down with her, but Katherine said, "Wait for me in the car."
"Okay."
I watched her leave, feeling annoyed that she didn't consider my feelings.
I didn't mind her past, but that didn't mean she could be intimate with other men in front of me.
No one could tolerate that.
Katherine made me feel helpless, and my enthusiasm for her took a big hit.
I even regretted not having sex with her last night.
I took out a cigarette, one after another, until the fifth one, when a voice suddenly said, "I told you, no smoking in my car."
I snapped out of my thoughts and realized I hadn't noticed Katherine approaching.
I quickly put out the cigarette, carefully examining her. She seemed normal, her clothes neat, as if she hadn't had sex.
But if Steven had performance issues, I had smoked five cigarettes, which was enough time for him to have sex two or three times.
Katherine got into the car, and I couldn't help but sniff lightly, but there was only the scent of perfume and smoke.
She became unhappy at my strange behavior. "John, what are you doing?"
"Nothing!" I started the car, feeling guilty.
"Do you think he's upstairs, that I had sex with him?" Katherine asked.
"I didn't!"
I couldn't admit to such a thing.
"Then why did you smoke so much? You've been unhappy since I said we were coming here! That's what you were thinking!" Katherine said coldly.
"I really didn't!" I defended myself.
