Chapter 229
That event was like a media conference, a big deal for the wine industry.
"You mean..."
"I'll get you two invites," Charles said.
I was thrilled. "Thanks, Charles!"
Charles patted my shoulder. "We're like family. No need to be so formal. Keep doing well, and maybe I'll need your help someday."
Leaving the Sevan City Old Cellar HQ and heading back to the office, word spread fast that Mia had closed a million-dollar deal.
The place was buzzing. A million-dollar deal meant at least three hundred grand in commission plus a salary bump!
WY Media Company offered higher commissions than Skyliho Group because WY was smaller and needed to spend more to keep talent.
Of course, Mia didn't get a commission, and the salary bump was so tiny I didn't even bother to calculate it.
Mia didn't mind and was secretly pleased.
Holly heard the news and sent her congratulations in the group chat to celebrate the million-dollar deal.
It felt surreal to everyone.
The immediate result was a surge in motivation to call customers.
That afternoon, there was a flurry of activity, resulting in two small deals worth ten grand each.
Including the previous three deals, the company now had six deals.
The small company was suddenly bustling, and everyone was busy.
Except me, the boss. I was pretty idle.
But then I thought, without me, there wouldn't be a million-dollar deal. That made me feel better.
I switched to my alternate account, and a message from Eloise popped up.
Eloise: [I left you two tickets; just mention my name when you get there!]
I replied: [Okay!]
Then there was Lily: [That was close; I almost broke up with him.]
I replied: [Sorry I couldn't help this time, but your joke was a bit too much. He was really upset.]
Lily: [Yeah, I've thought about it, but I still think he's a bit too petty.]
I thought, 'This has nothing to do with generosity. You can't expect me to cheer you on while you sleep with another guy.'
I replied: [Men are always a bit more sensitive about women being with other men.]
Lily: [Yeah, you're right.]
I closed Lily's message, and Jenny's message popped up: [What should I do? She's coming to see me!]
I wondered who she was talking about.
I noticed the female pronoun, and the only person who could make Jenny so nervous was Joseph's grandmother.
I replied: [When did this happen?]
Just then, Jenny called. I locked my office door and answered.
"Mrs. Garcia called me last night and asked me to have dinner with her tonight."
I asked, "Just Mrs. Garcia alone?"
"Probably," Jenny said.
I asked, "Did you show Mrs. Garcia the video I sent you?"
"Not yet," Jenny said. "Mrs. Garcia has had heart problems and high blood pressure these past two years. I'm afraid she can't handle it."
This was really tricky.
Jenny asked, "What should I do? Should I go or not?"
I asked, "Can you refuse?"
"No." Jenny sighed. "The best way is to tell Mrs. Garcia that I've started a new relationship, but I'm afraid it will make things difficult for you."
I suggested, "Tell Mrs. Garcia first and see how she reacts."
Jenny said, "That's all I can do."
I was still a bit worried. "Stay in touch at all times. Call me directly if anything happens, understand?"
"Okay!" Jenny replied.
Just as I hung up, Linda called.
I took a deep breath and answered, "Mr. Foster, what's up?"
"John, you must have forgotten something," Linda said. "Where's my itinerary?"
"Mr. Foster, I..."
"Come upstairs to see me right now. Remember, right now!"
With that, Linda hung up.
Damn, it was so annoying.
I thought about it and decided to head back to Skyliho Group.
But first, I called Katherine to explain. She chuckled. "Linda wants my itinerary? Fine, tell her I'm going to the Sevan City's Opera House tonight."
What? The Sevan City's Opera House tonight?
I was planning to call Rita to go with me!
"Ms. Bailey, what are you going to the Sevan City's Opera House for?" I asked.
"The piano princess of Sevan City is having a solo concert, and I happen to have two tickets. You're coming with me."
"Uh, Ms. Bailey, I..."
Before I could finish, Katherine hung up, not giving me a chance to refuse.
And why did Katherine choose the Sevan City's Opera House?
If Linda finds out, she'll probably go too.
I took the elevator to the Vice President's office and knocked on the door.
"Come in."
I patted my face, put on a smile, and walked in.
"John, I thought you wouldn't come to the company again." Linda had a stern face. "I know everything you've been doing these past few days. The people I promoted don't respect me, and you don't care about me at all."
What does that mean? Is she here to question me?
My smile faded. "Mr. Foster, you must be referring to what Ms. Davis told you."
"Nicole was promoted by me, and because of you, her work has become difficult. Do you think you're not at fault?"
I thought to myself, 'At fault? No at all.'
I said calmly, "If Ms. Davis's work is difficult, that's her personal capability issue, not related to me. Besides, Ms. Foster, you must already know the ins and outs of this matter. I was just protecting myself."
Linda said, "That's no excuse for being disrespectful to your superior."
"If you want to punish me, there's no need to say so much."
I looked Linda in the eye, unafraid.
"You've got some nerve, talking to me like this. Nicole said you were arrogant and domineering, and I didn't believe it. Now it seems you're not just arrogant, you're downright audacious. Don't think that just because you're useful to me now, you can do whatever you want. If I want, I can fire you anytime, and no media company will dare to hire you."
I didn't say anything; Linda indeed had that power.
Linda asked, "Why aren't you speaking now?"
I replied, "Ms. Foster called me here just to remind me."
Linda squinted. "Where's my itinerary?"
I said, "Tonight, Katherine will be at the Sevan City Opera House."
Linda asked, "With whom?"
I replied, "I don't know, but Katherine asked me to accompany her."
Hearing this, a hint of mockery flashed in Linda's eyes, "Katherine asked you to accompany her? Are you sure?"
I replied, "I'm sure!"
"You're just a driver. Surely, Katherine doesn't intend to let you into her inner circle."
Linda couldn't help but look me up and down. "You are indeed handsome. How about this, I'll give you another task."
"What task?" I asked.
"Pursue Katherine!"
What?
I didn't expect Linda to ask me to pursue Katherine.
"Ms. Foster, you must be joking. I'm just a driver; what qualifications do I have to pursue Ms. Bailey? Besides, the company doesn't allow romantic relationships. You're putting me in a difficult position."
"What's wrong with being a driver? Drivers can have their own love too," Linda said. "The company indeed doesn't allow office romances, but no one cares if it's outside the company."
I knew Linda was setting me up, but I didn't outright refuse. I showed a bit of hesitation. "This doesn't seem right."
"If I say it's right, then it's right."
Linda said, "If you can accomplish this, I can give you this much money!"
Linda held up three fingers. I pretended to be surprised. "Three hundred thousand dollars?"
"No, three million dollars!"
