I shot her a look and said, "Don't think I'm clueless. I know way more than you think. Your thing with Steven? Total sham."
"Who told you that?"
"No one had to. Isn't it obvious? He wants you gone!"
We both went quiet, and then I heard her start to sob.
I flicked on the light, and there was Linda, tears streaming down her face.
"Cut it out, I won't say more." I awkwardly tried to wipe her tears away.
She just cried harder, "Why is he doing this to me!"
"He may not want you, but I do," I said, my voice softening. "Whatever he can offer, I can give you tenfold." Leaning closer, I whispered, "I might not be in his league yet, but I'm doing alright." I pulled out my phone, showing her my bank balance.
Linda glanced at it, still teary-eyed, but her face went blank.
"Ninety million bucks? Where'd you get all that?"
"That's just a piece of it!" I said. "So don't sweat it about the kid or yourself."
"But... how?" Her voice was barely a whisper. "Are you some kind of secret heir? Why else would you put up with all this?"
I couldn't help but laugh, "Nah, just got lucky. And no, I'm not a trust fund baby. I made my own fortune; he's the trust fund baby."
I touched her belly, "Have the baby, and I'll give you and the kid the best life."
Her face was a mix of emotions. A small-time employee suddenly becoming a billionaire? Hard to wrap your head around.
"What else are you hiding from me?"
"Want to know? Promise me you'll have the baby, and I'll spill."
"Do you really want me to have it?"
"Yes!"
"Do you know what you're getting into?"
"He'll destroy you, and then he'll come for me too!" When I mentioned Steven, I saw fear flash in her eyes!
"Can you tell me about him?"
I leaned back on the pillow, and she lay on top of me. We were still in the middle of it, and I gently stroked her back.
Before, it was all flesh, but now I could feel her bones. I sighed silently; Stella was right.
"I don't really know him." Linda's body started to shake.
"How's that possible? You've lived together for years. Don't you know what kind of guy he is?"
"Ever stared into the abyss?"
"What do you mean?"
"He's sneaky. I've never heard him speak from the heart."
"Let me ask another question."
I asked, "Why'd he send you to such a dangerous place?"
Linda was quiet for a bit before saying, "He wants me dead!"
Just as I thought, it wasn't that simple.
"Why?"
"Because I know his biggest secret!"
"What secret?"
"Don't ask, I won't tell."
Linda said, "That man is a demon, super cruel. What you see now is just a front. Deep down, he's a monster. Don't mess with him, or we're both dead."
I smirked, "What if I find someone to take him out?"
Linda looked at me in shock, a spark in her eyes before it vanished. She then eyed me warily, "Who are you really?"
"What's wrong?" I was confused by her sudden shift. "I'm John, who else?"
"Are you one of his guys?" She was really scared now.
"Steven? No way!" I shook my head and said.
At my words, her tense body relaxed again, "He used to drink and party a lot, and hooked up with tons of women, which wrecked his body. Plus, he never held back. His sexual function is shot, but he still wants a kid. Otherwise, no one will inherit his wealth. So he wants me to have a kid for him and then quietly off that guy."
A shiver ran down my spine. "So if you get pregnant, he won't touch you, but he'll stop at nothing to kill me. But you said he'd destroy you too. Isn't that a bit contradictory?"
She gave me a deep look. "What about after the kid is born? I'm the only one who knows, and I'm the kid's mom. He's super selfish. Do you think he'd let his wife have another man's kid?"
"He'd find a way to kill me, and then no one would know this secret."
I thought, 'What a ruthless guy. He could even harm his own wife.'
"Then why did he want you to stay this time?"
"To take the fall." She gave a bitter laugh. "We're the perfect couple, you see. He knows he's pissed someone off, someone he can't afford to cross. So he leaves me behind as a shield. He's betting they won't come after me. And even if they do..." her voice turned cold, "maybe they won't be as angry if something happens to me.""Don't worry, I get it now. I won't let anything happen to you or the kid."
I ran my fingers through her hair. "Anyone who wants to hurt you will have to go through me first."
"Can I rely on you?" She looked up at me.
I didn't say anything, just kissed her lips and kept making love to her gently.
Her body was soft and weak. I said, "At least in Greenvale City, you won't have to live under his watch. As for your beef with Katherine, let it go."
She said softly, "Did I promise you I'd have the baby?"
I was speechless and thought, 'So everything you said before was a lie?'
Taking her face in my hands, I looked directly into her eyes. "Linda, be honest with me. Do you want to keep living like this? Or do you want to escape from him?"
"I want to escape from him."
"Okay, then I'll help you. If you don't feel secure, I'll transfer ten million dollars to you first."
With that, I transferred the money to her right in front of her.
"Aren't you afraid I'll take the money and get an abortion?"
"No, it's my fault in the first place."
Linda looked at me intently, then turned over.
I was surprised. "Again?"
"Shut up, I'll do whatever I want!"
After another round, Linda fell into a deep sleep.
This woman was really complicated.
I stayed with her until ten in the morning when Lillian's call woke me up.
"We're leaving for Crystal Nation today. When are you coming?"
I looked at Linda and carefully got out of bed. "Are we arriving in Crystal Nation this afternoon?"
"More or less, just waiting for you."
"My company sent me to Greenvale City for a business trip. You guys go ahead, I'll come in a couple of days."
"Alright, I'll message you when I get to Crystal Nation."
After hanging up, I sighed, wishing I could split myself in two.
There was also the class reunion at the end of the month. It was originally scheduled for the beginning of the month, but the homeroom teacher had surgery and won't be discharged until the end of the month, so it was postponed.
I was about to go back to the room to get dressed when I saw Linda standing at the door in a thin nightgown, arms crossed. Her perfect curves were very sexy.
"Why don't you sleep a bit more?"
Linda looked at me coldly. "Was that a girl calling you?"
"Yeah, a friend. We had planned to go to Crystal Nation for a couple of days."
"You're not allowed to go!" Linda said coldly.
"Why?"
