Chapter 281

Early in the morning, those words hit me like a bucket of cold water.

"Ms. Smith, what are you trying to say?" I asked, trying to keep my voice even.

"If you want a normal life, go to HR and resign. You're in over your head as assistant to the director," she stated bluntly.

"How can you say that before I've even tried?" I retorted, a flicker of anger rising within me.

Jenny's expression hardened. "Are you dense? What happened a few days ago wasn't enough of a lesson?"

"So you found out," I said, a humorless laugh escaping my lips.

"Leave Skyliho Group. Leave Sevan City. Get away from Joseph," she commanded.

"Why should I?" I challenged.

"I'll compensate you. Consider it a fresh start in a new city," she said, pulling out a bank card and placing it on the table. "There's three million dollars on it."

"Enough!" I snapped. "Whether I stay or leave is my decision. I don't need your pity money. If I'm broke, I'll earn my own way."

"John!" Jenny's voice rose. "How dare you speak to me like that?"

"Let me remind you, Ms. Smith," I said, my voice dangerously low, "I'm the assistant to the director. We're on the same level here. So you have no right to tell me what to do."

Her face turned icy. "Don't you get it? If you stay, Joseph won't let this go. Neither will Mr. Foster. I can only protect you for so long Katherine can't either!"

I laughed mirthlessly. "You seem awfully concerned about me, Ms. Smith."

I walked towards her desk, planting my hands on the surface and meeting her gaze head-on. Neither of us backed down.

"Concerned?" she scoffed. "I'm merely repaying the favor for the other day. We have no other connection. Don't flatter yourself. There are some things you can't handle."

"Then don't worry about it," I retorted. "You're used to getting your way, aren't you? Well, newsflash: I, John, will make you eat those words one day."

"Get out!" she spat. "You arrogant fool!"

'You want me gone? I won't make it easy for you.'

I sat down on the sofa, crossing my legs and lighting a cigarette.

"What's this? Refusing to leave? Do I need to call security?" she threatened.

"Be my guest," I said nonchalantly. "Just don't blame me for the scene you'll create."

"I've misjudged you, John. You're nothing but a rogue," she said, her voice laced with disdain.

"Now you're getting it," I replied, blowing out a plume of smoke. "Ms. Smith, I may be insignificant in your eyes, but listen closely. Joseph is bad news. Don't let him manipulate you. And don't worry about me. I can handle myself."

Jenny remained silent, her eyes narrowed as she studied me. I finished my cigarette and stood up. "Thank you for your time, Ms. Smith. I'll be going now."

I grabbed my things and left her office without another word.

Jenny was deliberately trying to provoke me into leaving.

But I couldn't leave, not yet.

Linda and Steven were both playing a dangerous game, and I was caught in the middle.

The game was on, and I had no choice but to play along.

I took the elevator upstairs to my new office. It wasn't big, but it was well-equipped.

Being an assistant wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for all the drama.

I settled in and then headed to the chairman's office.

"Come in," Steven's voice boomed from inside.

I entered and found him seated at his massive desk, reviewing documents. The office was lavish, even more so than the vice president's.

"Mr. Walton, John reporting for duty," I announced.

He looked up, a smile spreading across his face. "Ah, John! Have you settled in?"

"Yes, sir," I replied.

"Good. From now on, your focus is on being my assistant. Take it seriously, and you'll be well-rewarded."

"Thank you, Mr. Walton," I said.

"Now, go and coordinate with Mr. Foster and Ms. Wilson's assistants. Don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions."

I left his office, knowing that the real challenge was about to begin.

"Assistant to the director?" Linda said, setting down her pen and fixing me with a deceptively sweet smile. "How fortunate for you. But you do realize the gravity of this position, don't you? One wrong move could have disastrous consequences for the company."

I knew this wasn't a temporary arrangement.

"Please rely on Mr. Foster and Ms. Charlotte for guidance," she added, her tone laced with insincerity.

"Charlotte, could you give us a moment?" she asked, dismissing her assistant.

As soon as the door closed, Linda's demeanor changed. "Mr. Walton may have given you this position, but don't let it go to your head," she said coldly.

"Mr. Foster, I assure you, I'm not underestimating the responsibility of this role," I replied calmly.

She chuckled humorlessly. "At least you're self-aware. However, your role just got a whole lot more interesting."

What was she planning?

"Here's the deal. I need a copy of everything you work on. If anything seems beyond your capabilities, Charlotte will assist you."

It was a trap, a way for her to control me and set me up for failure.

But her next words made me pause.

"Find a way to get close to Ms. Wilson's assistant. I don't care how you do it: seduction, bribery, whatever it takes. I need her schedule, her work, everything. Understand?"

So that was her game.

I was to be a spy under the guise of an assistant.

"Mr. Foster, that's highly unethical," I said, trying to sound hesitant.

"Don't play coy with me. You took my money, remember?" she said, her voice like ice. "There will be consequences if you don't deliver."

Anger surged through me. She was the reason I was in this mess. If it weren't for her, I wouldn't be caught in this web of deceit.

"It's too risky. What if I get caught?" I asked, feigning concern.

"You were her driver. She trusts you. This should be easy," she said dismissively. "And if necessary, I can provide assistance."

"Assistance?" I echoed, playing dumb, although I already had a hunch.

"If needed, you can leak information about my activities. Understand?" she said, her eyes cold and calculating.

So, I was to be a double agent.

"Don't forget what's at stake," she said, her voice low and threatening. "Do this right, and your future will be very comfortable."
