Chapter 330
"Hey, why don't you scram now and we'll call it a family get-together," Maxwell said, trying to sound tough.
"Why should I leave?" I shot back, pulling out the keys. The trunk popped open automatically!
Both of them jumped, eyes wide.
"Let's bounce, the owner's probably coming," Maxwell said, stepping back. But Marie's eyes locked onto the keys in my hand, "Wait, what keys are those?"
"Keys to this car," I said, all casual.
She froze, then squinted at the car, looking like she'd seen a ghost, "Is this car yours?"
I nodded, strolling past Maxwell, and started unloading boxes from the trunk.
Out came all sorts of fancy gift boxes, high-end smokes that cost ten grand a pack—six packs in total! Then there were some rare red wines, also ten grand a bottle, a whole box of 'em, plus some pricey cosmetics and jewelry.
Marie was floored, "LV's latest summer handbag, and branded perfume."
"Uh, can you give me a hand with this stuff?" I asked, feeling a bit awkward, then flashed my expensive watch. Maxwell, pointing at it, blurted out, "That's one hell of a watch!"
I hadn't worn such a flashy watch in a while. This one was a gift from Lillian. She thought my old watch didn't match my new status.
"Yeah, you know it?" I teased.
Maxwell gulped, "Yeah, I'm kinda into watches."
Glancing at his watch, which was worth a few grand, I walked to the passenger seat, pulled out two more watches from the glove compartment, and said, "Got a couple here I don't wear anymore, you can have 'em."
Maxwell's jaw dropped, "You're giving these to me?"
Marie, equally stunned, covered her mouth. Her watch was only worth two grand.
Driving a luxury car, rocking expensive watches, handing out gifts worth tens of thousands—this wasn't just some assistant, this was a man of considerable means.
"Try 'em on, see if you like 'em," I suggested.
Maxwell took the watch, finding the invoice inside—twenty grand!
"This is too much," he said, eyes wide.
"It's nothing, as long as you like it," I replied.
"In that case, I'll take it," he said, ditching his old watch and happily putting on the new one.
Marie was still in shock, even used Facebook to scan and confirm the authenticity. When she saw the result, her face lit up, and she immediately took off her own watch, "This watch is gorgeous, absolutely stunning."
She quickly snapped a pic and posted it on her social media, "Thanks to my amazing future brother-in-law!"
'Typical,' I thought wryly. 'When you're loaded, you're 'family.' When you're not, you're invisible.'
I didn't bother arguing, "Can you help me with these?"
I handed her the handbags and jewelry, and she took them carefully, "Of course, no problem at all."
Maxwell also stepped up, "Let me handle it, don't mess up your suit."
With that, he grabbed the wine crate and a bunch of gift boxes!
I smiled, took everything out, and then shut the car door.
The whole way back, they couldn't stop praising me.
When we got back to the banquet hall, the vibe was still tense. From outside, we could hear Amelia arguing with her parents.
"Why did it take you so long to come back?"
Seeing Maxwell sweating bullets, Briana's face twisted, "Look at him, trying to help out of kindness, and he's treated like a servant!"
Maxwell put down the stuff, "Mom, what are you talking about? I volunteered to help my brother-in-law move these."
His words left everyone stunned.
"Maxwell," Briana sputtered, "did you just call him 'brother-in-law'?"
Maxwell grinned and gestured towards me. "Well, yeah! Who else would I be talking about?"
"Are you out of your mind? You can't just call him that yet," someone muttered.
Just then, Marie walked in, arms full of stuff. Seeing her loaded down, Briana rushed over, "Marie, are you okay? Need a break?"
"Mom, I'm fine. These are all gifts from John," Marie said, setting the items down.
Everyone's eyes zeroed in on the gifts. Amelia sidled up to me and whispered, "Didn't I tell you not to go overboard?"
I squeezed her hand, shaking my head, "Just a little something. I don't want you to have beef with your uncle and aunt."
Chase, who was into the booze business, stood up, eyeing the wine, "Whoa, this red wine is top-shelf."
He opened the box, "Ten grand a bottle!"
Everyone's jaws dropped.
"Are you serious?"
"Dead serious," Chase nodded. "Market price is ten grand a bottle."
He then spotted the high-end smokes, "And these cigarettes, six packs of 'em."
Counting them, he looked at me, his face a mix of shock and awe.
Briana couldn't keep it together, "Wait, if that's true, the wine and smokes alone are worth over a hundred grand."
Everyone looked like they'd seen a ghost, including Amelia's parents.
"Mom, that's not all. Check out these high-end gift boxes!" Marie chimed in.
"These are all primo gifts."
With each item Marie mentioned, the room buzzed with excitement.
"Are they fake?" someone asked.
Briana, who prided herself on her knowledge of luxury goods, stepped up, "I deal in high-end gifts, let me see."
She inspected each item, her shock growing with each one. By the end, the room was filled with her exclamations, "These gifts are all legit."
Alicia couldn't stay calm, "Are you saying all these gifts are real?"
Briana nodded, "Yep, they're all real! Altogether, it's about a hundred and seventy grand!"
The room went dead silent.
Everyone stared at me, eyes wide with shock and doubt.
Custom red wine, high-end smokes, and these gift boxes added up to a cool three hundred grand.
Marie held up the items in her hands, "Aunt, John bought all of these!"
One of Amelia's cousins, who worked at a luxury store, stood up, "LV's latest summer handbag."
"Oh my God, they're all authentic."
The cousin was so stunned she couldn't close her mouth. Alicia asked, "Are they all real? How much are they worth?"
"These luxury items are crazy expensive."
Once again, the room buzzed with shock.
Dropping tens of thousands on gifts, definitely a rich boyfriend.
The looks directed at me changed again, with Amelia feeling a mix of heartache and joy, whispering, "Why'd you spend so much?"
I smiled, "I'd spend anything for you."
Amelia's face lit up with a sweet smile as she leaned into me, glowing with happiness.
"John, did you get all of this?" Brett asked, looking floored.
I nodded, "Yeah, I was short on time, so I got what I could."
Even though it seemed like a lot, most of these were gifts from when I was in the hospital last time.
I still had plenty more at home.
"Uncle, John also gave us some super expensive watches!" Maxwell held out his wrist, causing another round of gasps.
"And me too!" Marie added, showing off her watch.
