Chapter 90

"No dirty talk to me!" Lily hummed.

"How is this dirty talk? It's clearly my heartfelt words."

I smirked evilly. She came to see me under the pretense of offering condolences. How could I not be aware of that?

She probably consulted Paul and the others. If it was genuine sympathy, why didn't she come with them?

Wouldn't that have avoided suspicion?

I sniffed the fragrance emanating from her body, gazing at her fair skin and leaning in gently.

"What are you doing? You can't..."

I paid no attention, muttering, "I'm marking you, so you'll be mine from now on."

In reality, I was just giving her a hickey.

Humans were complex animals driven by instincts.

Just as animals mark their territory with urine to assert ownership. Men did the same.

A hickey was a similar concept.

It involved a deeper level of psychological manipulation.

And for women, it never failed.

Twenty seconds later, I lifted my head. A fresh red mark appeared on her fair neck, distinct and conspicuous.

"Don't..."

She weakly pushed me away, more as an invitation.

"Behave yourself. Listen to me. Let me label you."

I greedily placed labels on her body, one, two, three... and finally, even on her collarbone.

I was about to continue when she suddenly opened her eyes. "Not there!"

Then she pushed me away, hastily fastening her clothes. Her eyes were either teary or misty, cheeks flushed, lips half-bitten, half-annoyed. "John, I'll say this one last time. I don't like you. If you try this again, I won't let you off."

After speaking, she grabbed her bag, covered her neck with her hand, and left in a fluster.

I licked my lips. Her scent was truly intoxicating. One taste and I was almost addicted.

Could I let the fish that took the bait escape?

Recalling this, I quickly called Rita back, opting for a voice call. Video calls might reveal my presence in the hospital, especially since I was currently dressed as a patient.

Rita quickly picked up the phone. "John, you finally returned my call!"

Her voice carried a hint of sorrow over the phone.

I chuckled apologetically. "Rita, it a good time earlier."

I could lie to anyone, but lying to Rita always left me feeling guilty.

"Are you free now?"

"Yes, I am."

Rita said, "You haven't visited me in days. Have you forgotten about me?"

"Rita, I'm sorry. I've been working late and didn't want to disturb your rest."

"It's okay. I know you're busy, but you need to take care of yourself too."

Rita continued, "I know you're trying to prove yourself. I can wait. Just don't push yourself too hard."

Her words warmed my heart. "I miss your cooking."

"Then come tomorrow, and I'll make something special for you. Judith keeps asking me why her dad hasn't visited, thinking you don't want her anymore."

"That's not true. I'll come over after work tomorrow."

After chatting with Rita for a while, I ended the call.

Unknowingly, I found myself surrounded by so many people. Life's encounters were truly miraculous.

At seven in the evening, Edward and Mary walked in carrying bags.

"John, are you starving?" Edward asked.

I had some abalone porridge earlier, so I wasn't particularly hungry. "I'm fine. Did Mr. Allen and the others leave?"

"Yes, they did." Edward unpacked the meals and said, "John, you really helped me out. Originally, the two production lines would have cost at least 500 million dollars, but he gave me a discount of 440 million dollars. I saved 6 million dollars, all thanks to you."

I waved it off. "I just happened to know him and mentioned it casually."

Edward said, "Hey, it's refreshing to be friends with you. There's never been so much hypocrisy."

He continued, "But John, Mr. Allen and the others mentioned it was quite risky this time. I know you mean well, but your safety is crucial."

"I'll be more careful next time."

I smiled. Without my recent selfless acts, I wouldn't have been able to turn the situation around so quickly.

"You're good at everything but don't consider yourself enough. But that's what I admire about you. You turned down a billion-dollar check just like that." Edward looked admiring. "But it shows your character. There aren't many people like you in this world."

I replied calmly, "In a world where money often dictates, holding onto certain values is essential."

I cursed inwardly. ‘If I can start over, I definitely won't do that.'

"You said it well. In any case, being friends with John is truly an honor."

Edward sincerely smiled. "Oh, by the way, I've reviewed the plan. It's excellent. I'll transfer the first installment tomorrow," he said.

"Edward, rest assured. I've arranged everything. It won't delay the promotion," I replied.

He must have discussed it with Gary. Once the machines were in place, all problems would be solved.

"I always trust your ability," Edward said.

Mary remained silent throughout, gazing at me with tender eyes. It made me a bit uneasy.

‘Edward is right here, and your gaze is too affectionate, isn't it?'

"Gary, I want to stay tonight to take care of John," Mary suddenly said.

I almost choked on my saliva.

'Hey, lady, what are you up to? Didn't we agree not to be too intimate before them?'

"Um, it's okay. I can handle it myself," I quickly said.

Mary cast a glance, then said to Edward, "Last night, it was the Miss Allen who took care of him. John saved my life, so I should do something."

I thought Edward would object to the idea of a man and woman being alone, but to my surprise, he said, "Well, it's only right. Although our family isn't as wealthy as the Allen Family, our morals shouldn't lag. Since John has no kin in in Sevan, it is our duty to take care of him."

"Edward, I... I'm a grown man, and she's a young lady. There will be talk."

I thought I had made my point clear, but Edward firmly stated, "John, a clear conscience fears no accusation. I believe in your character."

I struggled to contain the laughter that was welling up within me.

Mary's eyes twinkled with sly amusement, her gaze narrowing to that of a shrewd fox!

Gary had already said so. What else could I do?

To refuse further would indirectly imply an ulterior motive regarding Mary.

Later, Mary might think, 'You allowed Lillian to take care of you but refuse me. Is there some secret between you two?'

To avoid trouble, I reluctantly agreed with a heavy heart.
