Chapter 24
John: [Me and them? Who are you referring to?]
Mary: [Your 'wife' and 'daughter'!]Suddenly, it clicked. She was referring to Rita and Judith.
I stroked my chin thoughtfully, sensing a deeper meaning to her words. She knew of Rita and Judith's relation to me, so why would she ask such an obvious question? The only logical conclusion was that she had somehow discovered the truth about my relationship with Rita and Judith.
John: [What do you mean?]
I feigned ignorance, curious to see where this was going.
Mary: [I already know what your relationship with them is. (Sly smile emoji)]
John: [Oh, really? Tell me about it then.]
Mary: [That woman is your landlord, isn't she? You're not her husband, and the child isn't yours!]
I responded with a surprised emoji.
John: [How did you know?]
After a few minutes, she replied, not with a text, but with a voice message. I quickly slipped on my Bluetooth headset.
"John, I'm sorry for prying into your business. I apologize."
I was taken aback. She had indeed been digging into my life. Had she not apologized, I would have been quite unsettled. Who, after all, enjoyed being investigated?
After a moment's thought, I replied.
John: [It's okay, it wasn't real anyway. But I'm curious, what made you think to look into this?]
Mary: [Actually, I didn't think that way at first. But you don't look like the little girl, and Jack mentioned she didn't have a father, so I got curious and...]
John: [I understand. Although she's not my biological daughter, she's my goddaughter. She's been fatherless since childhood, quite the opposite of your nephew.]
Mary: [Oh, I see. That explains why you were at the camp. So, you're single?]
John: [Yeah, currently, I am!]
Mary: [I'm single too.]
Her message left me momentarily stunned. What was she implying?
Was she suggesting she was interested in me? That seemed a bit far-fetched. We'd only known each other for a day. Sure, I'd saved her, and perhaps she wanted to repay me, but in this day and age, who would actually do that?
I decided to test the waters.
John: [Heh, why don't we give it a try?]
I expected her to refuse, but instead, she sent a blushing emoji.
Mary: [Sure, let's try. It's perfect, my parents have been pushing me to go on blind dates, now I finally have an excuse to refuse those tedious dates."
My heart rate quickened. What did this mean? Was she joking, or was she using me as a shield to avoid blind dates?
John: [Sure, you're actually using your lifesaver as a shield.]
I joked, partly to gauge her real intentions and partly to deflect any potential embarrassment.
Mary: [Not at all!]Mary: [Actually, I can tell you're a very responsible and caring man, with good character, a perfect match for my standards.]
She added a blushing emoji for effect.
Mary: [And you're quite handsome, with a strong masculine vibe, just the type I like. (Shy emoji)]
I was taken aback, unsure of how to respond, when she suddenly retracted her message and sent a new one instead.
Mary: [Ah, what did I just send... I didn't scare you, did I? Just pretend you didn't see anything, I didn't send anything just now...]
Was she trying to deceive herself? I had seen her message, how could I pretend otherwise? This woman was certainly unpredictable.
I smirked mischievously.
John: [Hmph, I've already seen it, no use retracting now, I'm taking it seriously, you better be prepared to be the king's woman.]
Of course, my words were mostly in jest. Rita held a significant place in my heart, and she was not someone to be taken lightly. Her brother was a billionaire, and I was just an ordinary guy. I understood the principle of matching social statuses; it was normal for her to be naive, but shouldn't I know better?
