Chapter 250
This is totally different from what Mia told me.
"Don't believe me?" Paul asked, pulling out his phone. "See for yourself!"
I looked at the picture. Mia was holding a little boy who looked just like her.
I was stunned.
She was actually doing this?
"Now do you believe me?" Paul said. "I haven't shown this to anyone else. Just don't get too involved with Mia."
My mind was racing. "Send me the picture!"
"That's not appropriate," Paul said.
"I won't show it to anyone else," I promised.
"Alright," Paul nodded and sent it.
Just then, Mia walked in with her bag. Paul quickly put away his phone and whispered, "I'm outta here."
Mia smiled when she saw me. Honestly, dressed like a young girl, she didn't look like the mother of a little boy at all.
With Paul's words and the photo, it was hard not to believe.
She greeted me with a smile. I forced one back. Until I knew more, I couldn't accuse her.
She came up and whispered, "John, do you like my outfit today?"
"Not bad," I said.
Normally, I'd tease her, but now I wasn't in the mood.
"I've decided to resign. I have my resignation letter ready," Mia said.
Seeing her so eager, I felt a bit cruel.
If it was true, I couldn't face her like this.
I couldn't trust her with the company.
"Don't rush, I need to ask you something later," I said.
Seeing my bad mood, she didn't push. "Okay."
Back at her desk, she frowned, her good mood gone.
She looked at me, opened her mouth, but said nothing.
"John, you're back?" Lily walked in, looking happy to see me.
"Yeah," I replied.
Lily said, "Perfect timing. I have to go to Silvercrest this afternoon. Big client. Will you come with me?"
"Sure," I nodded.
At nine, I went upstairs to find Linda. I knocked, and she called, "Come in."
I walked in. Linda was reading a report.
"Out of the hospital?" Linda put down the report. "How was it? Feeling better?"
I frowned. How did Linda know?
"Ms. Foster, you know too?" I asked.
"Shouldn't I?" Linda smiled faintly. "I was there."
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"Where's my headband?" she asked.
I was stunned, then realized. "Ms. Foster, I left your headband at home. I can get it now if you want."
I had actually lost it, but I could buy a similar one.
"No need," Linda said, "you should thank me."
"For what?" I asked.
"I helped you a lot!" Linda said. "Without my testimony, do you think you'd still be here?"
"Thank you, Ms. Foster," I said quickly.
"No need to thank me. I helped you because you helped me too," Linda said.
I didn't think I had helped her. I was puzzled.
"I'm a bit dull, I don't know how I helped you," I said.
"That day, Mr. Walton was also at the opera house," Linda said.
I knew Steven was there, but that didn't count as me helping her.
Did Steven really see it?
No way, right?
I felt nervous.
Linda said, "You saved Ms. Smith. Mr. Walton praised you highly and wants to meet you."
I sighed in relief. That's what it was. I thought Steven saw me with Katherine...
I said, "Just doing my job. Please thank Mr. Walton for me."
That day, when I embarrassed Steven in the bathroom, he probably wouldn't praise me but would want revenge. For a man, sexual function is crucial to dignity, and I had completely outdone him. Seeing me would remind him of that shame.
"Mr. Walton is usually very busy and rarely in the office, so he asked me to pass on his praise," Linda said.
"Thanks for Mr. Walton's concern," I replied.
"But there's no reward. The company handled the matter for you. I hope you understand," Linda said.
I nodded. "I understand."
"Good. Considering your injury and the previous issue, I won't hold it against you. Now that you're back, report to me anytime, got it?"
"Yes, Ms. Foster."
"Don't disappoint me," she said, looking at me intently.
After leaving her office, I knocked on Katherine's door.
I walked in and saw Katherine writing something.
"What, do I need to entertain you?" Katherine glanced at me. "Pour your own coffee."
"No need, Ms. Bailey."
I picked up a coffee cup from the desk and started drinking.
Katherine raised an eyebrow. "Who told you to use my coffee cup?"
"Ms. Bailey's cup has a sweet fragrance, makes the coffee taste better," I said shamelessly.
She looked at me with disdain. "Don't joke around in the office."
I looked around. "No one's here to see."
"You dare talk back. What if someone comes in?"
Knowing she was cautious, I put down the cup and said, "I understand."
She looked a bit relieved. "Remember, if you want to get in trouble, don't drag me down."
I smiled apologetically and changed the subject. "By the way, how did you know the Joseph matter was resolved?"
"You weren't here, so you might not know. Skyliho Group and Skyliart Group started competing, but that's common. The real reason is Ms. Smith and Joseph reached some kind of agreement privately," Katherine said.
"What? They made up?" I asked.
"I don't think so," Katherine shook her head. "If they had, Skyliho Group wouldn't have kept her. How could the company let someone from Skyliart Group be an executive?"
"Then what is it exactly?" I was getting anxious. Joseph wouldn't back down easily. Jenny must have promised him something.
"Why do you look so nervous?" Katherine put down her pen. "Are you close to Ms. Smith?"
"Do I look nervous? Just curious," I said.
"Curiosity can be dangerous. Don't get involved. It's not something you can meddle in. When the time comes, no one can protect you," Katherine said.
"I understand," I said.
Katherine didn't continue the topic. "Can you drive me home tonight?"
"I might not make it. Ms. Wilson asked me to go to Silvercrest to meet a client," I replied.
"Then I'll drive myself. It's fine, nothing urgent. You can go now," she said.
Leaving the office, my mind was in chaos. First Mia, then Jenny—each one a tough situation to handle.
