Chapter 348 Katniss Doesn't Deserve These
"The Anderson family?" Clara knew exactly what Johnson was hinting at, but she played dumb.
Johnson pressed on, "Didn't Ethan promise to get engaged to you? You should get to know his family."
Clara fidgeted nervously, "But how am I supposed to do that?"
"I'll help you out," Johnson said. "This afternoon, I'll have my assistant bring you the info on the Thompson family. You can go through it carefully."
Clara agreed, her mood lifting significantly from the sourness she felt after failing to outsmart Katniss.
Thinking of Katniss, Clara felt a wave of irritation.
She asked Johnson, "Johnson, my dad also wanted me to ask if you could deal with Katniss sooner."
Clara couldn't stand Katniss, but she used Oliver as an excuse.
Just thinking about how well Katniss was doing in Luminous City, and now in Starhaven, made Clara's blood boil.
Katniss didn't deserve any of it!
"Opportunities are hard to come by," Johnson hesitated.
He had initially agreed to deal with Katniss at Oliver's request, but since Oliver hadn't mentioned Katniss again, Johnson didn't want to waste his efforts.
Clara sensed his reluctance and bit her lip, "But Katniss knows Ethan. She's like a ticking time bomb! If she stays around Ethan, she might tell him things that could mess up my relationship with him."
Johnson immediately became alert and said, "Then keep an eye out for opportunities. If you need my help, just call me."
Hearing his response, Clara finally relaxed. After nodding in agreement, Johnson left.
Just as Clara saw Johnson out, there was another knock at the door.
Curious, she opened it and was surprised to see Desmond.
Desmond had come to see her. The moment Clara saw him, she visibly panicked. She held the door slightly ajar and asked, "What are you doing here?"
Desmond should be in class, so why was he here?
"Clara, I'm feeling down. I miss you," Desmond said.
Yesterday, he had gone on a blind date with a girl, as Gabriel had arranged, but the girl's family wasn't impressed because he seemed distracted the whole time.
After learning about his state, Gabriel decided not to set him up with anyone else for the time being.
So, Desmond followed his heart and came to see Clara.
"Clara, won't you let me in?" Clara didn't respond to his feelings, so he asked if he could come in.
Clara didn't let him in. Instead, she blocked the doorway and asked, "Desmond, aren't you supposed to be dating other women? Why are you here?"
Desmond felt a pang of guilt, especially since he had hidden the fact that he was dating others from Clara.
At this moment, he had no right to speak.
He looked at Clara with a bitter smile and apologized softly, "I'm sorry, Clara."
"There's no need to say anything," Clara interrupted him. "I know you were forced into it, so I don't blame you."
Desmond pressed his lips together, feeling a sense of relief.
As long as Clara knew he wasn't doing it willingly, he was afraid she would misunderstand him.
Clara noticed Desmond's relief and couldn't help but sneer inwardly, but outwardly she looked pitiful and said, "But since you're dating other women, we should keep our distance. Otherwise, what happened in Luminous City might happen again. I don't want you to get hurt."
She wasn't worried about Desmond dating other women. As long as Desmond had feelings for her, she could always win him back.
But right now, she couldn't let Desmond be around her because it would mess up her plans. She needed to focus on Ethan and didn't have time to deal with Desmond.
Desmond didn't know Clara's thoughts. Hearing her words, he felt heartbroken.
Clara was willing to step back to avoid him getting hurt again. He had a sudden urge to abandon everything and run away with Clara, but he didn't dare. He could only say, "Clara, I'm sorry. I've wronged you."
"Desmond, I don't blame you. Your father wants you to date, and my father wants me to date. We can't escape this situation. But if you ever manage to break free, come find me. I promise."
She didn't finish her sentence, but Desmond understood. The tears in his eyes lessened.
"Okay, okay." Desmond agreed several times before turning and leaving dejectedly.
The day passed quickly, and by evening, Ethan had invited Katniss to a party organized by Tyler.
The party was at one of Tyler's houses. By the time Ethan and Katniss arrived, the place was already bustling with people.
Tyler had invited mostly their classmates and some young people from prominent families.
Katniss hadn't planned on coming, but since Maximilian had to work late and Ethan had insisted, she agreed. Upon arriving, Katniss noticed Scarlett was there too.
Scarlett saw Katniss and immediately came over, "Katniss, you're here! Come in and sit."
Having seen Katniss frequently over the past few days, Scarlett had become familiar with her. Knowing Katniss was married, Scarlett no longer saw her as a threat.
Katniss nodded, "You guys have fun. I'll just sit for a bit and then leave."
"How can you just sit for a bit? These are all Tyler's friends. Let's get to know each other," Scarlett said, handing Katniss a glass of juice.
Katniss nodded.
The party wasn't too crowded. Tyler had invited friends from school and outside, all of whom were decent people. Katniss didn't mind mingling. Everyone was friendly to Katniss.
Just as Tyler finished greeting Katniss, he received a call. He looked at Ethan mysteriously, "Ethan, guess who's here?"
Ethan looked at him, puzzled, "Who?"
"She's outside. Why don't you go get her?" Tyler said, handing his phone to Ethan.
Ethan took the phone and said hello. A familiar voice came through. It was Clara.
Clara sounded nervous, "Mr. Anderson? Are you here too? I think I'm lost. I don't know where to go."
"I'm here. I'll come get you," Ethan said, glancing at Tyler before heading outside.
