Chapter 413 Found the Wrong Person
When Emma's guard opened the door, one of the bodyguards who had been waiting outside stepped in.
"Ms. Kate, Mr. Hamilton has left the building."
Hearing this, Desmond realized Emma had stationed people outside Maximilian's company.
Luckily, now that Maximilian had left, he wouldn't have to endure any more torment.
But just as he breathed a sigh of relief, Emma's next words made him frown again.
"Take me to him, and don't forget to bring him along." Emma's gaze casually swept over the bruised and battered Desmond, and she couldn't help but laugh.
Desmond had no choice but to follow, dragged along by the bodyguards.
Downstairs at the company.
Maximilian and Katniss had just stepped out of the elevator and were heading towards their car when two people blocked their path.
As they were stopped, a third person quietly slipped away to report back.
Katniss frowned at the sudden appearance of the two people blocking their way, feeling that their outfits looked somewhat familiar.
As she was pondering, one of them spoke up.
"Mr. Hamilton, Ms. Kate wants to see you."
The tone was arrogant, as if it were a given.
Maximilian, however, was not one to be easily threatened.
As soon as the two appeared, the bodyguards and Conrad, who had been following Katniss, also showed up.
In an instant, the two were surrounded.
"I'm not interested in what Ms. Kate wants," Maximilian said, then led Katniss around the two and headed straight for the car.
Realizing they were trapped, the two tried to escape the encirclement.
After all, if they failed to stop Maximilian and let him get away, they would be the ones to suffer when Emma arrived.
As soon as they moved, the surrounding bodyguards didn't hold back, and a fight broke out.
Within two minutes, the two were subdued and pinned to the ground.
"What are you thinking about?" Maximilian asked Katniss softly, noticing her thoughtful expression.
Katniss shook her head, recalling the times she had encountered Emma. She couldn't help but find Emma's actions incomprehensible.
First, Emma had come directly to her, demanding that she hand over Maximilian.
Now, she was blocking the company entrance, trying to kidnap him for a meeting. It was almost laughable.
Conrad, having noticed the commotion, started walking over.
But before he could get close, a group of people rushed in.
The leader was dressed similarly to the two who had blocked their way earlier, and most of the others were dressed the same.
In the middle of the group was a woman, and behind her, two people were dragging a disheveled figure.
"Mr. Hamilton, in such a hurry to leave? My people mean no harm; they just want to invite you to meet with me," Emma said, ignoring everyone else and heading straight for Maximilian, who was already in the car.
Katniss heard Emma's words and glanced at Maximilian. She was curious about how he would respond to Emma.
After all, she had seen Desmond being controlled by Emma's people.
Desmond looked badly injured.
"Maximilian, help me," Desmond called out, unable to hold back any longer.
Seeing Maximilian felt like seeing his only savior.
After all, if Emma didn't get to meet Maximilian, Desmond would be the one to suffer.
Maximilian glanced at Desmond coldly, as if noticing him for the first time.
Even with several people between them, Desmond was terrified by Maximilian's icy gaze and immediately fell silent, though his eyes still pleaded for help.
"What did he do to upset Ms. Kate this time?" Maximilian asked.
Finally hearing Maximilian speak, Emma responded cheerfully, "He couldn't get you to come down to see me, so he upset me. But don't misunderstand, Mr. Hamilton. I had no intention of harming your brother. My people were just a bit too quick, which is why he looks a bit hurt."
Listening to her nonsense, Katniss couldn't help but take another look at Desmond.
No one would believe that he wasn't beaten on purpose.
Yet Emma spoke with such conviction, even asking Desmond, the victim, to confirm her words.
"Isn't that right, Mr. Boleyn?"
Emma's address nearly scared Desmond to death.
Trembling, he looked towards Maximilian and pitifully echoed Emma's words.
"Yes."
Speaking caused him pain, and his face contorted.
"In that case, Ms. Kate, feel free to entertain him," Maximilian said, showing no intention of continuing the standoff with Emma.
He made it clear that Desmond was hers to deal with, and he was leaving.
Desmond panicked upon hearing this.
"Maximilian?"
Desmond's eyes widened in shock.
One look at Maximilian's expression made him realize he shouldn't have gone along with Emma's words.
He quickly changed his tune, wailing, "Maximilian, help me! They're too rough; I'm in so much pain."
Desmond's antics were almost comical, and Katniss nearly laughed.
Emma, as if just noticing Katniss, said, "Ms. Manners, what a coincidence, meeting you again."
Katniss responded casually, "Not really."
Emma's face darkened slightly, but knowing that any breakthrough with Maximilian and Katniss would likely come through Katniss.
She swallowed her pride and said, "Ms. Manners, you wouldn't mind if I had a private chat with Mr. Hamilton, would you?"
Katniss replied seriously, "I would."
Maximilian took Katniss's hand and reassured her softly, "I won't talk to her."
Katniss felt a warm feeling inside, but glancing at Desmond, whispered in Maximilian's ear, "Leaving Desmond with Emma, won't that be a problem?"
"No," Maximilian said, a hint of a smile in his eyes as he quickly reassured her, "I'll find a chance to send him back to Luminous City."
Maximilian had never liked Desmond, and now that Emma was trying to use Desmond to manipulate him, she had picked the wrong person.
Katniss paused, realizing that Desmond was indeed a nuisance in Starhaven, both for Clara and for them.
So she said, "How about today?"
Maximilian immediately understood her meaning.
After a brief thought, he nodded.
Katniss then sat obediently beside him, smiling and staying silent.
Emma, growing impatient outside the car, was about to speak when she heard Maximilian's cold voice, "Hand him over to me, and we'll talk somewhere else."
