Chapter 403 Drove the People Away

"How could she forget about Desmond? That guy is Maximilian's brother!"

But as soon as Emma remembered that her people had once roughed up Desmond, she felt a bit uneasy.

"Go find out what Desmond's been up to these past few days."

Though her subordinate was puzzled by the order, they immediately went to carry it out.

Emma didn't linger outside Katniss's building.

She quickly left with her crew.

Katniss watched from the second-floor balcony as Emma got into her car.

Once the car was out of sight, she sat down on a nearby chair and picked up a book from the table.

However, she soon put the book aside. She couldn't focus on reading at all.

She had been too impulsive downstairs.

Even though she knew it was rash to chase Emma away, she probably wouldn't be able to hold back if it happened again.

Emma was just too much, provoking her and completely disrespecting Maximilian.

Maximilian, who was at the company, quickly learned from Conrad that Emma had visited Katniss.

He called Katniss, who was still feeling troubled.

Katniss could tell Maximilian was trying to comfort her, which warmed her heart a bit.

"I chased her away," Katniss said, referring to how she had directly sent Emma packing.

Maximilian didn't hesitate, "Good. You don't need to worry about anything else."

He would protect Katniss.

Even though the Kate family was not to be trifled with in Starhaven, he wouldn't let Katniss suffer for their sake.

Katniss nodded, indicating she understood.

They chatted for a bit longer, and once Maximilian felt Katniss was in a better mood, he mentioned that Dylan had come to see him again.

Katniss wasn't surprised that Dylan had gone to see Maximilian.

Considering the trouble Oliver had caused earlier, she was a bit surprised Dylan had resolved it so quickly.

And for Dylan to seek out Maximilian so soon, Nathan's situation must be really serious.

"I understand. I'll meet him this afternoon," Katniss decided, sticking to her original plan to meet with Dylan.

Maximilian didn't try to stop her but reminded her to be careful.

They ended the call shortly after.

After lunch, Katniss found Dylan's number and called him.

She had been so annoyed by the Manners family that she had blocked their numbers.

Now, calling Dylan, she wasn't disturbed. The phone barely rang once before it was answered.

"Katniss?" Dylan's voice sounded different, a mix of excitement and nervousness.

Katniss smiled, "It's me."

Hearing her voice, Dylan finally breathed a sigh of relief, his tone softening, "Katniss, you finally decided to talk to me."

He had just seen Oliver off and immediately went to find Maximilian.

Although he didn't meet Maximilian, Maximilian's people promised to relay his message to Katniss.

He didn't fully trust Maximilian's word and had planned to wait at the company.

But then Elodie called, insisting he come to the hospital.

He was on his way there now. He didn't know why Elodie was so insistent, but she had just woken up and couldn't handle more stress, so he complied.

"Two o'clock, at the Galaxy District café," Katniss said, giving a time and place without acknowledging Dylan's attempt at familiarity.

Before Dylan could respond, he heard the busy tone of a disconnected call.

Even though Katniss had agreed to meet, Dylan was still annoyed by her attitude.

Not long after, his car stopped outside the hospital.

He checked the time.

There was still an hour before two o'clock, so he could see Elodie first.

He quickly made his way to Elodie's room.

"Mom, what did you want to talk about?" Dylan got straight to the point, mindful of his meeting with Katniss.

Elodie looked stern, "Dylan, have you already started the matching process for Nathan and Clara?"

Dylan felt a surge of anxiety and shook his head vigorously, "No."

But then he remembered Nathan's earlier words and saw Hugo and Clara's doctor talking.

He hadn't expected Nathan to go behind his back and start the matching process.

Seeing Elodie's expression, she must have misunderstood and thought he had arranged it.

"I heard it from the doctor. Are you going to deny it? He's your brother. Do you want him to die?" Elodie was heartbroken, unable to understand why Dylan would agree to the matching.

"Mom, don't worry. I'll ask Hugo," Dylan tried to calm her.

He suspected it wasn't Hugo's idea but Nathan's own decision.

But telling Elodie that would mean admitting Nathan had lost the will to live.

So he couldn't tell her.

Elodie grabbed his arm, her eyes full of confusion, "He told me himself. Are you saying you don't believe your mother?"

Dylan had no choice but to try to reason with her, "Mom, even if they do the matching, it might not be suitable. It doesn't mean Nathan's kidney will be used."

"What do you mean? If the match is successful, are you going to use Nathan's kidney? He's so weak now. You're practically killing him!" Elodie was furious, unable to understand why her children were saying such things.

Dylan realized he had misspoken but couldn't reveal Nathan's lack of will to live.

And he hadn't yet convinced Katniss, so he could only promise, "Mom, don't worry. I won't let Nathan donate his kidney to Clara."

He had been hesitant before, but now he was sure this path couldn't be taken.

Nathan wouldn't survive without a kidney.

And if Clara knew her recovery came at Nathan's expense, she wouldn't be able to live with it.

Elodie didn't believe him, still clinging to one point: "Then why did you let Hugo start the matching process?"

Dylan had no choice but to explain again, "Mom, whether you believe it or not, I just found out about the matching. I'll talk to Hugo."

He would get to the bottom of it with Hugo.

Elodie, seeing his calm demeanor, believed him a bit more.

She knew she shouldn't take all her anger out on Dylan, but thinking about Clara's lack of a donor made her feel like she was burning inside.

Elodie felt a mix of sorrow and anger, wondering why their family had come to this.

Dylan, seeing Elodie calm down, gently pried her hand off his arm.

"Mom, take care of yourself. I'll handle the rest," he said softly, turning to leave.

Suddenly, Elodie grabbed his arm again, her expression angry and twisted, "It's all Katniss's fault! Go find Katniss and make her do the matching. Make her donate her kidney to Clara!"

After her rebirth
