Chapter 489 Why

Dylan's arm shook as he reached out, grabbing Clara's hand and then Elodie's.

Seeing him like this, Elodie felt a pang of sorrow. "Dylan!"

Dylan slowly turned his head to look at her. "Mom,"

"I'm here. Let's go home," Elodie whispered.

Clara added, "Yeah, Dylan, let's go home."

They talked to Dylan for a while before he finally managed to move. With their support, he slowly stood up and walked towards the exit.

Once Dylan was in the car, he still seemed down. After a long silence, he suddenly asked, "What happened to Katniss?"

He thought the reason he was released was that the blame had been placed on Katniss.

Elodie snapped, "They're all protecting Katniss. She didn't face any consequences!"

After Dylan was taken away, Elodie had tried to confront Katniss several times, but she was always stopped by Katniss's people before she could get close.

She had tried multiple times but never even got a glimpse of Katniss's face.

Now, just thinking about Katniss made Elodie's expression darken with anger and resentment.

Elodie, feeling agitated, vented her frustrations about Katniss to Dylan and Clara.

Hearing Elodie's rant and learning that Katniss hadn't faced any repercussions, Dylan clenched his fists tightly.

"Why? Why?"

He gritted his teeth, a crazed look flashing in his eyes, his whole body tensing up like a volcano about to erupt.

Before he was taken in, he had been calm, knowing that even if he was convicted of spreading rumors, he could be bailed out.

But he never expected Katniss to do something so disgusting.

She had made it impossible for him to be bailed out.

He had never suffered like this before.

It was all Katniss's fault. She was determined to ruin him.

Although he had managed to appear composed whenever Elodie or Lucas visited him, his thoughts had been changing day by day.

Eventually, he could almost feel a string in his mind that could snap at any moment, the string that kept his last bit of sanity and calm.

Because that string hadn't snapped, he could act normal whenever his family visited.

Dylan thought that if he just held on a little longer, he would be out.

Lucas was working hard to get him out, and it wouldn't be long now.

And now, he was indeed out, but learning that Katniss hadn't faced any punishment or consequences, that string in his mind snapped.

So, he suddenly broke down.

Elodie, seeing Dylan's anger, immediately empathized with him. "Yes, Dylan! Why should Katniss get away with this? Our family will make sure she pays for what she did to you!"

Dylan suddenly asked, "Where's Lucas?"

He had been released because of something Lucas did. Otherwise, he wouldn't have been let out early.

But why wasn't Lucas here?

"Lucas is busy with something else, so Clara and I came to get you," Elodie replied vaguely, not knowing what Lucas was up to.

Clara, sitting on the other side, had a hunch.

She suspected that Lucas might have been roughed up by Emma's people and couldn't make it.

But how could she tell Elodie that?

Elodie was fiercely protective of her sons.

If Clara told her what she suspected, Elodie would probably storm over to Emma's place without thinking.

Clara's thoughts made her expression uneasy.

Dylan noticed her expression and sensed something was off.

Elodie continued to rant about Katniss, telling Dylan how Katniss avoided her, making herself so angry that her chest heaved and her face turned pale.

Clara quickly tried to calm Elodie down. "Mom, don't get so worked up. Your health is the most important."

Elodie, her mouth dry from all the yelling, finally calmed down.

She looked at Clara, feeling a warmth in her heart.

Despite the tension between them over the kidney donation issue, Clara was as considerate as ever.

Thinking about how thoughtful Clara was, Elodie felt even more grateful that she had always treated Clara like her own daughter, unlike Katniss.

"Clara is so considerate," Elodie said, holding Clara's hand.

Clara smiled and squeezed her hand back, looking as considerate as ever.

Elodie then placed Clara's hand in Dylan's. "Dylan, once you've recovered, we'll go back to Luminous City. You and Lucas need to find a kidney donor for Clara."

Dylan, his emotions now more stable, readily agreed.

But thinking back to Clara's earlier expression, he had a bad feeling.

Soon, they arrived home.

Nathan was waiting at the door. Seeing them return, he quickly came over.

Seeing him struggle to get up, Elodie and Dylan both stopped him. "Nathan, just stay seated."

After his last trip to the emergency room, Nathan was back in his usual wheelchair. Though he could occasionally stand, he was very weak and could easily fall after a few steps.

"Dylan, welcome home," Nathan said from his wheelchair.

Dylan's arrest had partly been to get Katniss to treat Nathan, so Nathan felt very guilty about it.

Seeing Dylan looking so worn out and tortured, Nathan's guilt almost overwhelmed him.

At the same time, he felt a rare surge of resentment towards Katniss.

It was one thing for her to have Dylan arrested, but not allowing him to be bailed out was too much.

It was as if she were determined to make Dylan suffer.

When had Katniss become so heartless?

Nathan remembered how Katniss used to be so soft-hearted. Even when she refused to treat him, he hadn't blamed her.

After all, that was the outcome he had wanted at the time.

But now, Katniss had become so ruthless.
