Chapter 372 He Never Hides Anything from Her
Desmond's grip on the steering wheel tightened for a moment before he nodded, "Yeah, the allergy is pretty bad."
The marks around his eyes had faded significantly overnight, so he wasn't wearing sunglasses anymore.
However, his face still bore the scratches Dione had deliberately left, making him look quite unsightly.
He didn't dare let Clara see them, afraid she might overthink things.
Clara heard his explanation and, though still suspicious, decided not to press further.
The car was silent, but the police station was anything but.
"She dares to refuse to see me?" Johnson's face twisted with rage after hearing the officer's message.
He gritted his teeth, waiting for someone to bail him out.
Although Clara's testimony had caused him significant trouble, and he faced numerous charges, money could solve anything.
Even though the Thompson family was now heavily oppressed by the Lewis family, finding someone to take the fall was a piece of cake.
Soon enough, the Thompson family managed to get Johnson out.
The first thing Johnson did upon his release was to look for Clara.
However, when he went to the villa, she was nowhere to be found.
With his company still under pressure from the Lewis family, he had to temporarily set aside his search for Clara and deal with business matters first.
Meanwhile, Katniss and Sophia visited Scarlett at the hospital.
Scarlett had mostly recovered, and a person dressed as a butler was packing her things, indicating she was preparing to be discharged.
"Katniss! Sophia!" Scarlett exclaimed, putting down her apple and looking at them with delight.
Sophia asked curiously, "Are you being discharged?"
Scarlett replied, "Yeah, the hospital is so boring. The doctor said I could go home and come back when it's time to remove the cast."
They glanced at Scarlett's leg and saw it was still in a cast.
"Congrats on getting out of here," they said, genuinely happy for her despite the timing.
The butler finished packing and prepared to take Scarlett home.
They didn't linger at the hospital and introduced Scarlett to Brynn on the way out.
Everyone got along well, and the atmosphere was cheerful.
As they chatted, Scarlett invited them to her home.
Since they had come to check on Scarlett, they gladly accepted her invitation.
They all got into a car and headed to the Lewis Villa.
The Lewis family was wealthy, and Scarlett, being their only daughter, was especially pampered.
When Scarlett's mother, Juliet, heard Scarlett was bringing friends home, she warmly welcomed them at the door.
Dinner was also at the Lewis family home. Scarlett's father, Hawk, looked displeased when he arrived, but with Scarlett's friends present, he remained courteous and hospitable.
It wasn't until after dinner, when the guests had left, that Hawk's expression darkened again.
Scarlett, knowing her father well, guessed he was troubled and asked directly, "Dad, what's wrong?"
Hawk sighed and said, "The person who hit you has been found, you know that, right?"
Scarlett nodded, "Yeah, you told me. The mastermind was caught, wasn't he?"
"He was let out!" Hawk said angrily.
Juliet frowned upon hearing this.
Scarlett had been seriously injured; it didn't make sense for the culprit to be released so quickly.
"What happened? Hawk, explain clearly," Juliet demanded, her voice tinged with worry. "How could he be out in less than two days? What are the police doing?"
Though the Lewis family hadn't pressured the police, they shouldn't be so unreliable.
Hawk explained, "Johnson found someone to take the fall."
The person taking the blame was the driver from the night of Scarlett's accident.
The driver had been paid by Johnson, and now Johnson had given him more money to take the blame for the accident and even for what happened to Katniss and Ethan.
Whether it would work, Hawk didn't know.
"This man is lawless!" Juliet exclaimed, then turned to Scarlett, "Scarlett, stay home for the next few days."
She was genuinely worried about Scarlett and didn't want her to go out.
Scarlett, understanding her mother's concern, nodded in agreement.
After their conversation, Scarlett went upstairs and called Katniss.
"Katniss, be careful. Johnson used someone to take the fall and got out!"
Katniss had just returned home, and Maximilian was still at work.
Upon hearing Johnson was released, she wasn't surprised.
She had anticipated that Johnson would have a backup plan, and Ethan hadn't pressured the police or used his influence against Johnson.
Ethan wouldn't do such things, but Johnson certainly would.
Given Johnson's determination, he would find a way out.
"Got it, I'll be careful. You should be extra cautious, too, Scarlett."
Johnson had targeted Scarlett because of Clara, and with the Lewis family pressuring the Thompson family, Scarlett might be in danger if she went out.
They exchanged a few more words of caution before hanging up.
Katniss was deep in thought when Maximilian returned, "What's on your mind?"
Katniss explained Johnson's release, and Maximilian listened attentively before saying, "The Thompson family still has some resources, even if Johnson's management isn't great."
Katniss understood that the Thompson family wouldn't be easily defeated by the Lewis family.
Though the Lewis family was prominent, their upright approach could be disadvantageous against unscrupulous opponents.
"Let's not talk about him," Katniss said, shaking her head to clear her mind. "How's the company doing, Maximilian?"
She wasn't fully aware of the company's current situation, but knew Maximilian's expansion plans well.
He had stayed in Starhaven to build a successful business there.
They were close, and he never hid anything from her.
"We've secured a few more partnerships, progress is good," Maximilian said, gently ruffling her hair with a loving smile.
Katniss, pleased with the news, said, "Maximilian, you're amazing!"
She never hesitated to praise and admire him.
Maximilian smiled, and as they talked, the doorbell rang. Conrad brought in a five-star meal.
Maximilian had ordered it in advance, and though Katniss had already eaten, she joined him for a bit.
After their meal, they spent a cozy evening together.
The next morning, Katniss woke up, her thoughts still lingering on the previous night, making her blush.
Maximilian had already left for work, and Katniss headed to her training.
As she entered Starhaven Medical University, Desmond suddenly blocked her path.
To her surprise, Clara was with him.
Clara looked pitiful, almost leaning into Desmond's arms, but Desmond was different from usual, wearing a mask on his face.
