Chapter 475 It Will Be Worth It
In the car, Elodie stared anxiously at the taxi in front of them. "Are Nathan and Clara going to the hospital?"
Lucas didn't respond, his expression grim.
He was also watching the taxi ahead, lost in thought.
Dennis, who was driving, noticed Lucas's silence and answered Elodie, "Yeah, Mrs. Manners, this road leads to that private hospital."
Lucas had already explained Nathan's plan to contact the private hospital to Elodie.
Because Lucas had laid out the situation clearly from the start, Elodie had agreed to wait outside instead of confronting Nathan immediately.
"What should we do? What should we do?" Elodie was at a loss, then suddenly resolute. "We can't let Nathan find out! Hurry, catch up, and stop them!"
She couldn't bear the thought of Nathan knowing he could donate a kidney to Clara, let alone seeing him go through with it.
Dennis hesitated. "Mrs. Manners, it's not safe to overtake here. We'll handle it at the hospital."
Initially, Dennis hadn't been keen on bringing Elodie along, fearing she might complicate things.
But Lucas worried that leaving Elodie with Nathan might cause even more trouble.
He had taken Elodie out early in the morning, intending to meet Dylan and see if there was any information Dylan hadn't shared.
However, Elodie seemed to sense something and quickly returned, without meeting Dylan.
In the end, Lucas decided to keep her with him.
"It'll be too late by the time we get to the hospital!" Elodie insisted.
Dennis sighed. "Mrs. Manners, it won't be too late. We can switch the test results."
Lucas added, "Mom, you don't need to worry. Dennis and I planned to swap the results with a failed match."
Although it might take some time, Lucas believed it was worth it.
After all, Clara was involved too.
Whether Clara knew Nathan was taking her for a match test or not, Lucas wanted to eliminate all potential threats in one go.
If this test could make both Nathan and Clara give up, it would be worth the effort to switch the results.
Elodie understood immediately.
"Lucas? Can we keep it a secret?" Even knowing Lucas's plan and the potential relief it would bring, Elodie couldn't fully relax.
Lucas nodded. "Mom, trust me."
Elodie took a deep breath. "Alright, let's do as you planned."
Lucas nodded.
After a while, as they were still on their way to the hospital, Elodie suddenly asked, "Is there no news about a kidney donor?"
She worried that even if they managed to hide it this time, Nathan might try again.
The best solution would be to find a donor.
But it had been days with no news.
Lucas shook his head. "Mom, there are too many people ahead of us in line. It's out of our control."
Hearing the frustration in Lucas's voice, Elodie fell silent.
Soon, Nathan and Clara arrived at the hospital.
They went straight to the lab for the compatibility test.
Even with an expedited fee, the results wouldn't be ready until the next day, which displeased Nathan.
"You said the results would be quick."
Nathan glared at the doctor, a friend he had recently reconnected with.
The doctor shrugged. "You came too late. If you'd come earlier, you could have had the results tonight. Now, it'll be tomorrow. The lab techs need rest, too."
Clara didn't mind waiting until the next day. She hadn't expected to get a transplant in Starhaven anyway.
She wanted Nathan to return to Luminous City with her.
With Desmond there, even if the Manners family didn't support her, Desmond could take care of her.
"Nathan, tomorrow is fine. No need to rush," Clara reassured him.
Nathan glanced at the doctor again, thinking about Lucas and Elodie possibly returning at any moment.
He turned to Clara. "Let's go home."
As they left the hospital, Nathan made Clara promise not to tell Lucas or Elodie about the test.
Clara agreed readily.
After they left, Dennis brought Lucas into the hospital to meet the doctor Nathan had seen.
Elodie followed Lucas closely.
When she heard the doctor confirm that Nathan and Clara were there for a compatibility test, she rushed over. "Are they here for a match test?"
"Yes."
Elodie was both anxious and angry.
Thinking about Clara's calm demeanor, she asked, "Did Clara agree to this? Does she know?"
She couldn't understand why Clara would agree to this, knowing Nathan's health couldn't handle losing a kidney.
From the moment Lucas told her about Nathan's plan, she had been uneasy.
Seeing Clara and Nathan head to the hospital together, she had tried to convince herself that Clara was unaware.
But now, she wasn't sure.
"She knows," the doctor confirmed.
Elodie felt dizzy, the room spinning around her.
She swayed, nearly fainting.
Lucas caught her just in time, seeing her pale face, he decided to end the conversation.
"Please handle the results," Lucas said, supporting Elodie.
The doctor smiled. "Of course, Dennis asked me to take care of it."
Seeing Elodie's condition, Dennis asked, "Should we check on Mrs. Manners?"
Lucas declined. "No, I'll take her to see Dylan."
Elodie, struggling to stay upright, agreed. "Let's go see Dylan."
They had planned to use visiting Dylan as an excuse, and they needed to check on him anyway.
Dennis signaled Lucas to stay in touch.
Lucas understood and led Elodie away.
After they left, Dennis asked the doctor, "Tell me everything that happened. I'll confirm the timing of the results with Lucas."
The doctor agreed, recounting Nathan and Clara's visit in detail.
