Chapter 426 Finally Got in Touch
Dylan barely slept a wink that night.
Every so often, he would call Clara's phone.
Finally, at 8:30 in the morning, he got through.
When he heard the ringing instead of the voicemail, he jumped up excitedly.
But the phone rang several times before it was answered.
"What did you do to Clara? Let Clara answer the phone!"
Thinking of the arrogant Ryan from last night, his first words were a threat.
Clara, clutching her phone, froze completely.
Just from that one sentence, she knew Dylan had found out about Ryan.
A chill ran through her, and without saying anything, she hung up.
She had already gone home and taken a shower, but she still felt nauseous and couldn't shake the irritation in her heart.
Dylan called again, but she didn't answer.
She picked out a modest outfit and then got into a car heading to the hospital.
On the way, she saw that she had almost as many missed calls from Desmond as from Dylan, so she called Desmond back.
Desmond was groggy when he answered the phone.
He had fallen asleep and slept through the night.
"Clara?" Desmond's voice still carried a hint of confusion.
Clara's voice was sweet and soft as she asked, "Desmond, where are you? Can you come to the hospital?"
Desmond was taken aback but couldn't refuse Clara's request, quickly agreeing, "Sure! Clara, I'll be right there."
He was so groggy that he forgot he wasn't even in Starhaven.
"Desmond, you're the best..." Clara's voice sounded like she was about to cry, making Desmond's heart ache, and he immediately quickened his pace.
But after taking a few steps, Desmond suddenly stopped.
"Clara," He looked at the unfamiliar hotel decor and realized something, unsure how to continue.
"Desmond, what's wrong?" Clara asked softly.
Desmond rubbed his head, the pain making him more alert, and he finally remembered that Maximilian had sent him back to Luminous City last night.
He hadn't dared to go back to the Boleyn family and had been in a hurry to charge his phone to contact Clara, so he stayed at a hotel near the airport.
When Clara didn't hear Desmond's response, she panicked and asked provocatively, "Desmond, you're not coming, are you?"
Desmond instinctively denied it, "No way!"
As soon as he said it, he regretted it, but didn't know how to take it back.
He could tell Clara was upset, and despite what Dylan had told him yesterday, he couldn't completely disregard Clara.
Clara sighed in relief, said a few more words, and hung up.
She sat in the car, looking out the window, thinking that as long as she could keep it hidden, everything would be fine.
As long as she could keep it hidden.
She clenched her fists as she thought.
The taxi driver glanced at Clara in the back seat, noticing her pale face, and asked, "Are you okay?"
Clara was startled and didn't answer.
After hanging up, Desmond made a decision.
He was going back to Starhaven.
Since he hadn't gone home yet and was near the airport, all he needed was a plane ticket to get back.
Even though Clara wanted him to go to the hospital now, he figured it wouldn't matter if he went a bit later.
With that in mind, he quickly packed up and headed out.
But as soon as he opened the hotel room door, he saw a tall, burly man.
At first, he didn't pay much attention, but when he took a step forward, the man followed suit.
Desmond immediately sensed something was off.
"Who are you? Why are you following me?" Desmond asked.
The man didn't respond.
Desmond glared at him angrily but didn't engage further, quickly heading towards the airport.
Just as he was about to step into the airport, the man who had been silent all along suddenly spoke, "Mr. Boleyn, Mr. Hamilton asked me to relay a message."
Desmond was startled and stopped in his tracks.
"Are you sent by Maximilian?"
When he returned, Maximilian's men hadn't boarded the plane with him.
So, they had arranged for someone to watch him in Luminous City?
Desmond was scared but still thought there might be room for negotiation.
"Go ahead."
The man finally spoke seriously:
"If you go back to Starhaven, Emma will be informed immediately, and if she goes to Mr. Hamilton, he won't intervene."
Desmond froze.
Suddenly, the airport seemed like a monstrous threat, and he couldn't take another step forward.
When Clara called, he had been so anxious that he forgot why she had returned to Luminous City.
Now, thinking of Emma, he felt a wave of pain.
He never dared to question Maximilian's words.
If Maximilian said he wouldn't intervene, he meant it.
And the bodyguard who sent him on the plane last night had said the same thing.
This man was just repeating it.
He broke out in a cold sweat, trembling as he turned away from the airport.
Once he was in the car heading back to the Boleyn Villa, he shakily texted Clara.
Clara quickly received Desmond's message.
Learning that Desmond had changed his mind about going to the hospital, Clara's eyes turned cold, a flash of gloom passing through them.
She gritted her teeth and didn't call Desmond back.
Instead, she composed herself and dialed Dylan's number.
Dylan, who had been waiting by his phone, answered immediately.
But as soon as he picked up, he heard Clara crying.
"Clara? What's wrong?" He was anxious and worried, his heart aching at the sound of her sobs.
After Clara hung up on him that morning, he quickly realized it was Clara, not Ryan, who had answered.
His reasoning was simple.
Ryan had been vulgar last night and wouldn't have resisted mocking him, so the person who answered was likely Clara.
Hearing Clara's sobs now confirmed his suspicion.
Considering Clara's emotions, Dylan only called her once after she hung up, then waited for her to call him back.
And now, she finally did.
"Dylan," Clara cried for a while before choking out, "I'm coming to the hospital to see you."
Dylan quickly agreed, not daring to ask about last night, only comforting her, "I'll be waiting at the hospital, Clara. Don't be scared, I'm here."
Clara didn't cry for long before hanging up.
She didn't want to say too much over the phone.
Calling Dylan was just to gauge how much he knew, and from his cautious tone, she knew he likely knew what Ryan had done to her.
Soon, the taxi stopped outside the hospital.
Clara took a deep breath and walked inside, her eyes red as she soon met Dylan.
