Chapter 409 Really Deserves a Beating
"Mr. Boleyn, Ms. Kate wants to see you." The visitor's words were polite enough, but his tone was undeniably rough.
Desmond and Clara were seated, and when they looked up, they saw a burly man in a black suit standing in front of them.
Clara glanced at him briefly before turning her gaze to Desmond.
The visitor was here for Desmond.
Desmond's eyelid twitched as he recognized the somewhat familiar face, and he immediately had a guess.
Not giving the man a chance to continue, Desmond quickly said, "Hold on a sec, let me wrap things up and I'll go with you."
He smiled nervously at the man, then grabbed Clara and headed towards Elodie's hospital room.
"Desmond? Who is he?" Clara asked.
Desmond shook his head, "He's not someone to mess with. Clara, wait here for me. I'll be back after I meet with him."
Clara wanted to ask more, but Desmond didn't dare delay and left the room immediately.
The burly man outside the room saw him come out and, hearing his deferential words, headed straight out of the hospital.
On the way, Desmond couldn't help but probe, "Sir, do you know why Ms. Kate wants to see me?"
He had been severely reprimanded by Emma, and now just thinking about her made his face and body ache. He didn't dare avoid her summons.
Compared to Dione, who only liked to tease him, Emma, who had her men beat him up, was much more intimidating to Desmond.
Moreover, after he was beaten last time, it was Maximilian who rescued him.
He was scolded by Maximilian and then lectured by Gabriel, making him even more aware of Emma's fearsome nature.
"Why ask so many questions?" The bodyguard gave Desmond an impatient look.
Seeing that look, Desmond immediately shut up and obediently kept quiet.
Emma's car was parked outside the hospital.
Desmond followed the bodyguard out and was pushed into the car, only then realizing Emma was inside.
"Ms. Kate, hello. What can I do for you?" Desmond stiffened, quickly composed himself, and greeted her with obvious flattery.
Emma looked at him with disdain, clearly unimpressed.
She couldn't understand how, according to the information her people had gathered, Desmond and Maximilian could be brothers, yet be so different.
Desmond felt humiliated by Emma's disdainful gaze but didn't dare show any anger. He could only smile obsequiously.
As he forced a smile, he reminded himself that he was under her roof.
Just as he settled in, the car started moving.
Desmond was startled and quickly asked, "Ms. Kate, where are we going?"
Although Emma's people hadn't laid a hand on him today, he still didn't dare act recklessly.
"To find Maximilian." Emma glanced at him lazily before quickly looking away, as if something dirty had tainted her vision.
Desmond was stunned.
He hadn't expected Emma to call him out to find Maximilian.
What did her search for Maximilian have to do with him?
As he pondered this, Emma extended her hand, "Give me your phone."
Desmond patted his pockets, realizing his phone wasn't with him, and panicked.
"Ms. Kate, I think I left my phone in the hospital room. Can I go back and get it?"
He recalled the chaos with Elodie, where she had scratched and clawed at him, and he had struggled to restrain her.
His phone might have fallen during that commotion!
Emma frowned. "You lost it?"
Desmond quickly nodded, "Ms. Kate, I'll get it right away."
"No need." Emma glared at him, then had the driver hand her his phone and shoved it into Desmond's hands, "Use this to call."
Desmond took the phone, confused by Emma's intentions.
Emma, cold and impatient, said, "Call Maximilian and get him out here."
Desmond was stunned again, "What?"
He hadn't expected Emma to seek him out for Maximilian.
But he was still worried about his phone.
His phone wasn't the problem; it was the people who might contact him.
If Dione tried to reach him and he missed the call, Dione would cause trouble.
But he didn't dare offend Emma either.
Seeing her displeased expression, he didn't dare mention retrieving his phone again.
"Ms. Kate, I don't remember Maximilian's number." Desmond's voice grew smaller, almost inaudible, "But I have it saved in my phone, so..."
Emma rolled her eyes.
If she didn't need Desmond for something today, she would have had her men beat him up.
He deserved it.
Desmond, terrified and weak-kneed, still managed to hold himself together. He thought Emma might let him go back for his phone.
His phone really couldn't stay in Elodie's room.
But Desmond was disappointed.
Emma took out her phone and recited Maximilian's number.
She had her people find it, and it was indeed Maximilian's office number.
She had called it once, but after saying a few words, the call was abruptly cut off.
Subsequent calls went unanswered.
"Call Maximilian and get him out here."
Desmond didn't dare test Emma's patience further and quickly dialed the number she recited.
The call connected, but it wasn't Maximilian who answered.
"Hello?" Chris, busy with paperwork, answered the call.
Desmond's anxious heart sank. "I'm looking for Maximilian."
He immediately recognized the voice wasn't Maximilian's and felt more confident.
Emma frowned.
"Are you Desmond?" Chris asked after confirming Desmond's identity, then curtly said Mr. Hamilton wasn't available and hung up.
Hearing the busy signal, Desmond's scalp tingled.
Emma took the phone from him, dialed again, and handed it to the bodyguard, "You speak this time."
The bodyguard obediently repeated the request to speak with Maximilian, receiving the same response.
Chris, puzzled by the repeated calls, contacted Maximilian.
Soon, Katniss and Maximilian, who were already heading to the office, arrived.
"That number called several times, but it wasn't Desmond." Chris briefed Maximilian.
Maximilian nodded, not concerned.
Chris didn't think much of it either and focused on work, "There are many documents needing your attention. Shall we start?"
Maximilian glanced at Katniss, intending to decline, but she led him to a chair.
"Get to work."
She wasn't trying to overwork Maximilian; Chris's pleading eyes were just too pitiful.
"Alright, wait for me," Maximilian said, quickly diving into his work.
"Okay." Katniss nodded.
However, Maximilian kept glancing at her, and with Chris frequently entering and discussing confidential matters, she felt it was inappropriate to stay.
