Chapter 462 Love Me, Love My Dog
As soon as Katniss and Maximilian reached the top of the stairs, they were greeted by Chris, who looked a bit weary. "No wonder folks downstairs are looking for you two," Chris said before he even got close.
Maximilian's expression turned cold. "It's Emma. Ignore her. We'll stay in the office for a bit. Just send her away."
Chris frowned at the mention of Emma but nodded.
As the two were about to pass him, he quickly called out, "But there's also someone else looking for you, Katniss. Do you want to see them?"
"Isn't it Emma looking for me too?" Katniss asked, though she couldn't think of anyone else it could be.
After all, there were only two cars following them earlier, and Emma always made a big show of her arrivals.
Two cars were normal for her.
Katniss was puzzled.
Did Emma think that if she couldn't see Maximilian, she could see her instead?
Chris noticed her confusion and clarified, "One group is here for Maximilian, that's Emma. But there's another person here for you, Katniss. His name is Lucas."
Chris's expression didn't change when he mentioned Lucas, but he guessed that since Lucas shared Katniss's last name, they were likely related.
"He came to the office?" Katniss frowned.
Lucas had some nerve, not getting through on the phone and then showing up in person.
"Yeah," Chris replied, noticing Katniss's displeasure.
He guessed there was some tension between them and asked seriously, "Should I send him away?"
Katniss thought about how Lucas had been calling her nonstop.
Even if she avoided him now, he would likely come back to bother Maximilian later.
She didn't want to cause Maximilian any trouble, so she decided to see Lucas.
"No, I'll see him," she said, stopping Chris.
She had made herself clear on the phone, but Lucas still came.
She wanted to see what he was up to.
Katniss tried to pull her hand from Maximilian's, but he held on tighter. "I'll go with you," he said.
Katniss smiled wryly. "You better not. Emma is downstairs."
Emma was like a persistent fly; she wouldn't leave easily.
If Maximilian went down, he'd run right into her.
And Emma had brought people with her.
Even though they had their people, it was their territory, and a confrontation wouldn't be good.
Maximilian thought about Emma and felt annoyed.
Even though he caused trouble for the Kate family, it didn't stop Emma from pestering him, which was frustrating.
"Then have Lucas brought up here," he said, not wanting Katniss to go down alone.
Katniss knew he was worried about her and agreed. "Alright, arrange a meeting room for me."
Chris went to relay the message, and Katniss found an unused meeting room. "You go ahead and work," she told Maximilian.
Maximilian shook his head. "I'll stay with you."
Katniss looked at Conrad, who was with her. "You go help Mr. Peterson. Conrad can protect me."
Starhaven's branch was now fully managed by Chris, making him one of the key figures in the company.
Since Maximilian might return to Luminous City or go abroad with her, Chris needed to handle things independently.
But the transition was new, and Chris didn't have a suitable assistant yet, making him quite busy.
Maximilian had been spending a lot of time with her, which reduced his work hours.
Katniss didn't want to cause any issues for his company and didn't want to take up more of his time.
She also had another reason. She might not be polite to Lucas, and didn't want Maximilian to see that side of her.
Smiling at Maximilian, she silently asked for his understanding.
Conrad spoke up, "Mr. Hamilton, don't worry. I'll protect Mrs. Hamilton."
Maximilian, seeing Katniss's pleading smile, agreed reluctantly. "I'll have someone else come in. If anything happens, let them call me."
He wanted at least two people with her.
Katniss nodded. "Okay."
Maximilian gave her a worried look before leaving. Conrad called another person to join them.
Soon, Lucas was brought upstairs, but somehow, Emma came along too, following Lucas.
Fortunately, Emma's entourage wasn't allowed up.
Emma entered the meeting room and saw Katniss.
She scanned the room, noticing only Katniss and two others, and frowned. "Where's Maximilian?"
Katniss was relieved that Maximilian had left. Otherwise, it would have been troublesome.
Katniss thought. Maximilian was hers. If someone like Emma, with impure motives, saw him, it would be her loss.
Emma glared at Katniss, clearly seeing her as a rival.
"Maximilian isn't here. Ms. Kate, please leave," Katniss said, then turned to Lucas. "What about you? Are you here for me or Maximilian?"
