Chapter 453 Asking While Knowing the Answer
A few days ago, Maximilian had been extra cautious, personally driving Katniss to Starhaven Medical University every day to protect her from potential threats.
But now that Ryan had been caught, Katniss found herself secretly pleased when Maximilian offered to drive her.
They quickly got ready, had breakfast, and were about to leave when Katniss noticed a call from Lucas.
"Lucas is calling," Katniss said, showing her phone to Maximilian.
Maximilian shrugged. "You don't have to answer if you don't want to."
Katniss thought for a moment. "Yeah, you're right."
She put her phone on silent and decided to ignore Lucas for now.
She didn't want to waste her time with Maximilian on a call with Lucas.
One of the bodyguards was driving, while Katniss and Maximilian sat in the back, holding hands.
Maximilian, knowing Katniss's training was almost over, asked, "Isn't your final test coming up soon?"
Katniss nodded. "Yep."
She had mentioned the date of her final test to Maximilian before, so she wasn't surprised he remembered.
"Still in the Amber District?"
"Yeah, we leave tomorrow. The test lasts two days."
"I'll go with you this time," Maximilian said.
Katniss was surprised but then remembered Maximilian had said Chris could handle the Starhaven branch.
She smiled and agreed.
She didn't want to be apart from Maximilian either.
Even though Maximilian hadn't had any health issues recently, she worried about leaving him alone.
Soon, they arrived at Starhaven Medical University.
Katniss got out of the car, said goodbye to Maximilian, and noticed Lucas had called three more times during the short drive.
After watching Maximilian's car drive away, she finally answered Lucas's call, her tone flat. "Who is this?"
Even though Maximilian had told her he had denied Lucas's attempt to play the family card last night, Katniss felt it wasn't enough.
She wanted Lucas to understand that after she left the Manners Villa, they had no relationship.
If she weren't so tired of dealing with them, she would have sought revenge for her past life, too.
But for now, watching the Manners family fall apart was satisfying enough.
Lucas, relieved to hear Katniss's voice instead of Maximilian's, said, "Katniss, it's me, your brother Lucas."
He tried to sound as gentle as possible, a tone he had never used with her before.
Katniss felt nothing but disgust. "What? You must have the wrong number. I don't have a brother." She hung up before Lucas could respond.
Feeling good, she continued to her training class.
Lucas was left stunned, his body and face frozen.
He hadn't expected Katniss to hang up on him, and her words echoed what Maximilian had said last night.
It was infuriating!
Clenching his phone, Lucas's expression darkened.
Elodie approached cautiously. "Lucas, what happened? What did Katniss say?"
She knew Lucas well enough to guess that Katniss must have said something hurtful to make him this angry.
Lucas shook his head. "I'll call her again."
He realized that if he wanted to talk to Katniss, he couldn't approach her as a brother.
Last night, he hadn't argued with Maximilian when he said Katniss had no brother, but hearing Katniss say it made him instinctively want to scold her.
But she had hung up before he could.
Katniss seemed to be becoming more like Maximilian, which made things even more complicated.
Lucas called again, but Katniss didn't answer.
He grew impatient, not knowing that Katniss had put her phone on silent and was focused on her training.
With the final test in two days, she couldn't afford to slack off.
Lucas, hearing the call go to voicemail again, felt his anger rising.
He decided to visit Nathan in the hospital with Elodie.
Elodie, seeing Lucas's mood, couldn't help but complain about Katniss's lack of respect and filial piety.
Lucas remained outwardly calm but agreed with her internally.
At the hospital, they found Nathan looking pale and weak.
Lucas had hoped to ask Nathan how to get Katniss to help Dylan, but Nathan quickly changed the subject to Clara.
"Mom, is Clara coming to see me today?" Nathan asked.
Elodie, who had been cursing Katniss in her mind, was taken aback by the question.
Lucas answered first. "Clara is staying at a friend's house for a few days."
Nathan frowned. "Clara isn't well. How can you let her stay out?"
He had been trying to arrange a kidney transplant with Clara, but being stuck in the hospital made it difficult.
He needed Clara's cooperation to keep it a secret from Elodie and the others.
Thinking about the successful match report he had seen, Nathan was determined to tell Clara in person and persuade her to keep it confidential.
He knew Clara was kind-hearted and hoped to convince her.
Elodie frowned. "We're worried about Clara, too, but she finally has a friend to visit. We can't keep her cooped up."
Elodie felt uneasy.
From what she knew, it seemed that Clara didn't have such close classmates.
So she suspected that Clara might have been coerced by Katniss.
Nathan said nothing more.
Lucas, sensing something was off, said, "Mom, you should rest. I'll talk to Nathan."
He felt uneasy about Nathan's lack of will to live and suspected Nathan knew about the successful match with Clara.
Elodie sighed and left, trusting Lucas to handle the situation.
