Chapter 374 He Definitely Wants to Mess with Him

When Desmond said that, Clara obediently stopped asking questions.

Just to be safe, Desmond quickly blocked Dione's number.

After they got in the car, Clara suddenly asked, "Desmond, how'd your date go?"

Desmond was caught off guard by Clara's question and didn't know how to respond.

"Desmond, I know you didn't want to go on that date. Before, I was just trying to use Ethan to get back at you."

She knew she had to bring up Ethan with Desmond. If she didn't, it would be like a thorn that kept pricking him from time to time.

But she couldn't just talk about Ethan alone; she had to tie it to Desmond's dating situation. That way, even if Desmond felt hurt, he would also feel guilty towards her.

"I know," Desmond said after a long pause. "It was my fault. I won't do it again. If my dad asks me to find another woman, I won't go."

He had truly made up his mind, so he spoke slowly and firmly.

Clara let out a breath.

Although Desmond's promise wasn't entirely trustworthy, it was enough to calm her uneasy heart.

After Desmond blocked Dione, she indeed didn't have the chance to bother him anymore. But then Gabriel called.

Gabriel's call came just as they entered a clothing store.

Desmond's phone rang, and Clara looked at him.

She always felt that Desmond was hiding something from her, so she was particularly sensitive to his communications.

Clara was worried that Desmond might hang up and say it was a spam call again. If that happened, she couldn't help but overthink.

Seeing it was Gabriel calling, Desmond explained directly, "It's my dad. Clara, you go ahead and look at the clothes. I'll be right back."

With that, Desmond stepped outside.

Clara watched his back, guessing what might be going on, but she didn't follow him.

Gabriel was probably asking Desmond to find another woman again.

She didn't know if Desmond would keep his promise, but she had to make sure this trip wasn't in vain. So she stopped thinking about Desmond and picked out a dress to try on.

Outside, as soon as Desmond answered the call, he heard Gabriel's unrestrained yelling.

"Why didn't you answer Ms. Saunders' call? It's hard to find someone who likes you, and you didn't pick up! If you mess this up again, I'll personally make sure you learn your lesson."

Desmond was stunned by the scolding but was particularly puzzled by the first sentence. "Likes me? Dad, what are you talking about?"

He had indeed hung up on Dione, but the idea that Dione liked him was baffling.

Gabriel, restraining his anger, explained, "Ms. Saunders thinks you're alright. You need to go on a date with her, get along well, and get engaged as soon as possible!"

Desmond knew Dione didn't genuinely like him. He was sure she was up to something.

"Dad, I don't think she's right for me."

But as soon as he said that, Gabriel shouted, "Do you think you have the luxury to choose? You didn't go after Brynn when I told you to, and now there's someone who likes you, and you still won't go? Are you trying to drive me crazy?"

Even over the phone, Gabriel's anger was palpable. Desmond hadn't said much before he heard another voice.

It was Emily, trying to calm Gabriel down. "Don't be mad, Gabriel. If Desmond says Ms. Saunders isn't right for him, it means he doesn't like her. We can't force him to be with someone he doesn't like."

Desmond listened quietly, feeling grateful to Emily.

Compared to Gabriel's authoritarian ways, Emily was more considerate of his feelings.

"Get out of my way!" Gabriel, still furious, pushed Emily aside.

Emily fell to the ground, clutching her leg and sweating. "Gabriel, I hurt my leg."

Gabriel quickly put down the phone to check on Emily's leg, but she said, "Gabriel, just get me some ice to put on it."

"Don't move. Wait here for me." Gabriel helped her up and went to get some ice.

Desmond, hearing their conversation, worried if Emily had hurt her leg. He relaxed a bit when he heard Emily's voice again.

"Desmond, your dad's not here now. Let me talk to you." Emily's voice was low and sounded tired.

Desmond felt a pang of sadness and obediently replied, "Mom, I'm listening."

In the Boleyn family, the one who cared most about him was Emily. Naturally, he relied on her more than Gabriel.

Emily sighed, "Desmond, you're not in Luminous City, so you don't know how tough things are for our family right now. Your dad wants you to find a girlfriend in Starhaven because he has no other choice. Now that Ms. Saunders is willing to meet you, it's a good thing."

Desmond understood Emily's point but didn't know how to explain that Dione wasn't genuinely interested in him. After all, Dione had been ruthless to him before.

He stayed silent, and Emily continued, "Desmond, I'm not asking for much. Just keep Ms. Saunders interested for now, so your dad can feel better."

Hearing Emily's tired voice, Desmond gritted his teeth and agreed, "Okay, I'll keep her interested, but I won't get engaged."

Emily, relieved by his answer, said, "Then call Ms. Saunders back and set up a date. Don't keep her waiting."

Desmond frowned, thinking about Emily's injured leg, but he agreed.

He was about to ask how serious her injury was when Emily said, "Your dad's back. I have to go."

Desmond stared at the phone for a moment before resigning himself to unblocking Dione's number.

But instead of calling her, he sent a text to arrange a meeting time and place.

After sending the text, he turned off his phone and went back into the store to find Clara.

Clara had just finished trying on an outfit. Desmond suppressed his guilt. Although meeting Dione felt like betraying Clara, he had no choice.

"Mr. Boleyn didn't yell at you, did he?" Clara didn't ask what Gabriel wanted; she just innocently asked if Gabriel had yelled at Desmond.

Desmond nodded, "My dad's always like that. But don't worry, I didn't agree to go on a date."

He hadn't agreed to Gabriel but couldn't refuse Emily's heartfelt plea.

Clara blinked and didn't press further. Instead, she pointed to her outfit and asked, "Desmond, does this look good?"

Desmond quickly praised, "It looks great. I'll buy it for you."

Clara blushed and smiled, then said, "Desmond, Dylan said we can visit the hospital now. Will you come with me?"

Desmond thought about the time he had arranged with Dione and softly replied, "I'll go with you. It's been a while since I visited Ms. Smith and Nathan."

Desmond knew that Nathan and Elodie had been transferred to Starhaven by Dylan, but he hadn't visited them due to his strained relationship with Clara.

Now that they were back on good terms, it was time for a visit.

After her rebirth
