Chapter 483 Unable to Rest Assured

Seeing Alex staring blankly at Katniss and her group as they walked away, the chatter around him grew louder.

Stella noticed Maximilian's gaze and saw Alex lost in thought. She patted his shoulder. "Hey, Alex, you alright?"

Alex snapped out of it, catching snippets of conversation about Katniss.

He frowned and quickly changed the subject. "Yeah, I'm good. Katniss and her crew probably have other stuff to do. Let's go grab some food."

Katniss, now far away, was unaware of the speculation about her. Even if she knew, she likely wouldn't care.

She never expected much from this group, especially after Victor had stuck that note on Dylan.

Their attitudes made it clear.

"What are you thinking about?" Maximilian asked, tightening his grip on Katniss's hand.

Katniss shook her head. "Nothing important. Let's just go home."

She had a test in the Amber District tomorrow and would be away from Maximilian for two days. She was a bit uneasy about leaving him alone.

She had suggested that Maximilian come with her to the Amber District, but unlike last time when he had eagerly agreed, this time he had firmly refused.

Maximilian, seeing that Katniss didn't want to talk, didn't press further.

After saying goodbye to the others, he led her to the car.

Once inside, Katniss closed her eyes to rest, while Maximilian sat beside her, holding her hand in silence.

After a while, Katniss opened her eyes and suddenly asked, "Maximilian, are you not coming with me to the Amber District tomorrow?"

Maximilian shook his head. "I have meetings at the company that I can't miss. I need to attend them before we leave Starhaven."

Katniss nodded, forcing a smile. "Well, I hope everything goes well for you."

She had asked him once before, and he had given the same reason. She understood.

Feeling a bit uneasy, Katniss couldn't hold back any longer. "Maximilian, are you sure you're okay?"

She was worried that he might have hurt himself while she was away last time.

It pained her to think about it, especially since Maximilian had tried to hide it from her.

But she had found out from Chris not long ago.

So this time, she was really worried.

"I'm fine," Maximilian said firmly.

Seeing the concern in her eyes, he frowned slightly.

"My leg is fully healed. There's nothing to worry about."

Katniss reached up to smooth the frown on his forehead. "Don't frown."

Her fingers traced his face, from his brow to his nose and cheeks, her eyes filled with concern.

"Your leg is healed, but what about the self-harm?" Katniss's concern only deepened.

She remembered asking Jesse about Maximilian's condition.

Jesse had said that Maximilian needed companionship and love, so she had tried her best to provide that.

It had worked.

Maximilian's self-harm incidents had decreased, only occurring when he was extremely emotional.

But just when she thought he was getting better, he had relapsed after she left Luminous City for Starhaven for just one day.

She hadn't known the full extent of it because Maximilian had covered it up.

It was only after talking to Chris about what had happened during the last test that she remembered the day before Starhaven.

So she had asked Jesse.

Jesse hadn't hidden anything from her, and she learned that Maximilian's condition had been severe.

She had known from the day Maximilian arrived in Starhaven that he might self-harm when she wasn't around.

But because he had seemed to recover so well, or perhaps had hidden it so well, she had thought he was truly getting better.

Hearing Katniss's question, Maximilian remained silent.

Katniss sighed. "Max, let me help you tonight, okay?"

At least, she could try to help a little more.

Maximilian rubbed her head. "Okay."

He knew his condition better than anyone and remembered how it felt to lose control.

Meeting Katniss was his luck.

He didn't want to hold her back, but some things needed to be faced gradually.

He didn't want to be the reason she was held back.

The car fell silent again.

While they were quiet, others were talking about them, their voices loud.

"Katniss and Ethan don't care about us. If they pass the test, we'll all be training abroad together. Their attitude might get them isolated."

The speaker was one of the trainees dining with Alex and Stella. He had had a few drinks, his face flushed.

"Yeah, but she might not even pass the test," someone else said.

Alex, hearing them talk about Katniss, suddenly spoke up. "Based on Katniss's last test scores, as long as she performs normally, she won't fail."

His tone was confident, and he was stating a fact.

People usually gave Alex some respect, so they reluctantly agreed.

"Yeah, her last scores were pretty good."

"You're right, Alex. She should pass."

They all knew Katniss's last scores weren't just good; they were excellent.

Stella suddenly said, "Not necessarily."

"What do you mean?" Alex was the only one who asked.

Stella thought of Maximilian's expression and the rumors she had heard. She stood up and said to Alex, "Let's talk outside."

Alex frowned but followed Stella to the balcony.

"What's so secretive?" Alex asked, annoyed.

Stella ignored his annoyance and asked, "Do you know the guy with Katniss earlier?"

Alex's face darkened, his eyes sweeping over Stella with displeasure.

"Are you talking about Katniss's boyfriend?" he asked, his tone and expression not hiding his irritation.

After her rebirth
