Chapter 464 More Like Enemies
"What did you say? I didn't catch that."
Katniss lazily tossed out the words, glancing at Lucas, whose chest was heaving with anger.
Her gaze was indifferent.
Lucas clenched and unclenched his fists, his face alternating between red and white.
It was quite a sight.
But after shouting those words, he regretted it a bit.
After all, he had come here to persuade Katniss to help.
Whether she knew who was pressuring Dylan or not, he had other matters to discuss with her.
Thinking of his other objectives, Lucas sighed heavily and sat back down.
"Katniss, I lost my temper. Let's sit down and talk this through."
Katniss gave him a skeptical look but sat down, her expression calm as she waited for Lucas to continue.
Feeling slightly relieved, Lucas thought carefully about his words and softened his tone.
"Katniss, if you don't know who's targeting Dylan, that's fine. I'll keep investigating. But you need to check on Nathan."
Lucas's tone was both helpless and gentle, as if Katniss were a cherished younger sister.
He thought that if Katniss wouldn't help with Dylan, he could at least get her to treat Nathan.
Surely, she wouldn't be so ungrateful after he had humbled himself this much?
Lucas believed that after his plea, Katniss would relent.
That way, he wouldn't have to worry about Nathan's health anymore.
But Katniss found Lucas's words laughable.
She glanced at his hypocritical face and casually asked, "Dylan, Nathan? I don't think I have anything to do with them."
Did they expect her to treat Nathan for free again and endure the Manners family's criticism?
Dream on!
The Manners family had disowned her long ago, and she had been too blinded to see it.
Now that she saw clearly, there was no way she would care about the blood ties Lucas was trying to leverage.
She had heard that Elodie was demanding that she donate a kidney to Clara in the hospital.
She wouldn't repeat the mistakes of her past life.
"What do you mean, Katniss?" Lucas's expression twisted, and he pointed a finger at her nose.
Though he couldn't reach her across the table, the two people standing behind Katniss stepped forward slightly, ready to act.
The tension in the air was palpable.
Lucas sensed the threat and quickly withdrew his hand.
Katniss didn't care about his small gestures and kindly clarified his confusion.
"I mean, I have nothing to do with Dylan or Nathan."
Lucas thought Katniss was upset about the recent conflicts with Dylan and Nathan in Starhaven.
Gritting his teeth, he said, "What about me? I'm your brother!"
"What did you say? Who are you?" Katniss looked at Lucas with feigned confusion.
Under Lucas's gaze, Katniss's expression returned to calm as she slowly distanced herself.
"Don't spread lies. I've said it before—I don't have a brother."
She had conveyed the same message to Dylan.
But at that time, Dylan was already on his way to the police station, so Katniss didn't see his reaction.
Now, saying it to Lucas's face, she could see his expression.
First, confusion and bewilderment, then his facial muscles tightened with anger and stiffness.
But soon, he seemed to think of something, and his eyes darkened as he pressed his lips together.
Lucas fell silent.
Katniss sat across from him, quietly watching him with his head bowed.
A minute passed, and Katniss grew impatient.
She felt she had spent enough time mocking the Manners family today.
Just as she was about to get up and leave, Lucas clenched his fists and suddenly asked, "Are you upset because we didn't kick Clara out?"
"What?" Katniss didn't understand why he suddenly brought up Clara, but she explained, "No."
It wasn't any one thing that had changed her. It was everything that had happened before. She had simply come to her senses.
The Manners family had never truly considered her family, in this life or the last.
In her past life, she had desperately wanted to be part of their family, to have their affection, but it had ended badly for her.
In this life, after her rebirth, she had only wanted to live well on her own.
As long as the Manners family didn't provoke her, she wouldn't go after them.
After all, any grudges between them were from a past life.
And they did have an unbreakable blood connection.
In Luminous City, their actions had shown they saw her as a complete outsider.
Or rather, to them, she was less than an outsider.
If their relationship had to be defined, it was more like enemies than family.
Lucas felt relieved when Katniss denied it was about Clara.
In his mind, no matter how many mistakes Clara made, she was still their precious one.
Even if it meant getting Katniss's help, he couldn't do wrong to Clara.
Despite his relief, Lucas still wore an expression of confusion and anger.
"If it's not about Clara, then what is it?"
Katniss didn't care about Lucas's feigned anger. Her impatience was now evident. "You ask too many questions."
Lucas was nearly driven mad by her dismissive tone.
"Katniss, you have the Manners name! The family needs help, and you have to step up!"
He couldn't believe that even after coming to talk to her in person, Katniss was so ungrateful.
She said she had no brother. Did she think they were all dead?
Or did she just not care about the Manners family?
What infuriated him even more was her saying he asked too many questions.
Wasn't that the same as calling him a chatterbox?
But he couldn't afford to fall out with Katniss now.
So Lucas suppressed his anger again and loudly emphasized, "Katniss! The family is in trouble, and you can't just ignore it!"
Katniss responded loudly, "What does the Manners family's trouble have to do with me? Not clapping my hands is already a mercy."
"How dare you!" Lucas slammed the table, shouting in rage.
He felt he was about to lose control of his anger.
Katniss just looked at him with a cold smile.
Lucas found her gaze piercing and raised his hand to strike her.
But before he could reach her across the table, Conrad grabbed his arm.
With a firm grip, Conrad made Lucas cry out in pain.
