Chapter 487 Released
Lucas nodded but said, "You and Dylan should head back first."
He had promised to help Emma, and there was no way he could just leave now.
But the rest of the Manners family really shouldn't stay in Starhaven any longer.
He figured that if he stayed to help Emma deal with Katniss, she wouldn't make things difficult for the rest of the Manners family.
Clara, hearing that Lucas intended to stay, quickly asked, worried, "Lucas, aren't you coming home with us?"
Lucas tried to ease her mind, "I have some things to take care of."
Clara was silent for a moment before saying, "I understand."
She could probably guess why Lucas wanted to stay, but didn't dare to ask more.
She had already connected it to Emma.
Just thinking about Emma made her body ache with fear.
She couldn't control it, couldn't stop it. She was terrified of Emma and never wanted to have anything to do with her again.
"Lucas," Clara asked weakly, "Are you hurt anywhere?"
She heard the weakness in Lucas's voice and couldn't help but worry that he had been beaten by Emma's people.
Emma had a habit of having her subordinates beat people during conversations for amusement.
Although it wouldn't be fatal, it was painful and torturous.
Thinking of this, Clara shivered involuntarily.
"No," Lucas said, but his voice was hoarse.
The hoarseness and weakness in his voice only made his condition more apparent.
Clara, hearing Lucas's voice, could almost imagine his miserable state, her teeth chattering but unable to speak.
Lucas, not hearing Clara say anything else, told her to go home early and then hung up the phone.
After hanging up, Dennis hadn't arrived.
Lucas leaned quietly against the wall in the hallway of the club, squinting his eyes and enduring the pain, waiting patiently.
When Dennis finally arrived, he saw Lucas looking half-dead and, upon discovering his injuries, wanted to call the police.
"Who did this to you?" Dennis was shocked, having never seen Lucas in such a sorry state.
Lucas shook his head, speaking weakly, "Just take me home. We'll talk there."
"Are you sure you don't need to go to the hospital?" Dennis asked, eyeing Lucas skeptically.
Lucas thought for a moment, "You're right. I can't go home like this. Take me to your place."
Elodie was at home, and with Nathan already sick, if he went back like this, Elodie would only worry more.
Dennis didn't argue further, helping Lucas to the car and laying him down in the back seat.
As soon as Lucas lay down, his phone rang.
Dennis picked it up and, seeing Lucas's reluctance to move, asked, "It's Mrs. Manners. Should I answer it for you?"
Lucas responded with a casual nod.
Dennis answered the call.
Elodie's voice came through, sounding extremely happy. "Lucas! Dylan is out! He's finally been released!"
Elodie seemed to be talking while walking.
Her voice was loud enough that even without the speaker on, Lucas could hear it.
Lucas was slightly taken aback, murmuring, "Didn't expect it to be so quick."
He had just reached an agreement with Emma, and she had already managed to get Dylan out.
Her efficiency was impressive.
But then again, if Emma weren't efficient, nothing would be.
Elodie, not hearing Lucas's soft murmur, continued talking. "Lucas, can you come home now? I want to go with you to pick up Dylan."
Just thinking about how Dylan had been inside for several days made Elodie feel heartbroken.
She knew that Dylan's release was likely due to something Lucas had done.
Lucas might have known about it earlier and could already be on his way to pick up Dylan.
But she wanted to see Dylan as soon as possible, so she asked Lucas to come home and take her along.
As she spoke, she was also looking for clothes to change into.
These past few days, she had been worried, looking haggard and even forgetting to dress up.
It was only when she passed by a mirror that she realized she couldn't go see Dylan looking like this. Dylan would feel guilty and blame himself.
Elodie kept talking, and Dennis moved the phone closer to Lucas.
Lucas, lying in the back seat, found the space cramped despite the car being spacious.
He looked at the phone Dennis held out, but shook his head instead of speaking.
Lucas knew his condition too well.
His voice was off, and as soon as he spoke, Elodie would notice something was wrong.
After all, Clara had already noticed, and Elodie, being his mother, would find it even easier to tell.
He wasn't going home to avoid worrying Elodie. If he spoke now, there would be no point in going to Dennis's place.
Dennis understood his meaning and took the phone back.
He greeted Elodie in a calm and natural tone, "Mrs. Manners, it's Dennis. I'm Lucas's friend. We've met before."
Dennis had met Elodie once, but only once.
Even though he had only met her once, he knew quite a bit about the Manners family, so he remained calm even in this situation.
Elodie, having only met Dennis once, didn't immediately remember him. "Ah, Dennis," Elodie said, recalling, "I remember you're Lucas's friend. Is Lucas with you now?"
Dennis responded, "Yes, Lucas is here. He's busy with some things."
Hearing that Lucas was busy, Elodie didn't want to disturb them further.
She told Dennis she would go pick up Dylan herself and then hung up.
Dennis handed the phone back to Lucas and drove off.
Meanwhile, Elodie, after hanging up, was about to leave when she ran into Clara. "Clara, you're back! Dylan has been released. Let's go pick him up!"
Elodie, seeing Clara, felt a sense of relief.
Initially, she thought Lucas would go pick up Dylan and wanted him to take her along.
But Lucas's condition seemed off.
She even had a feeling that Lucas's sudden busyness was related to Dylan.
