Chapter 499 Involved
Clara knew exactly what she was doing when she went with Nathan to the hospital for the compatibility test yesterday.
It was almost like Clara wanted Nathan dead!
Elodie could barely keep it together, thinking about it.
But she remembered Dennis's promise that the test results would be faked to show no match, which gave her some peace of mind.
Even though she was mad at Clara, she couldn't show it too much. The marriage alliance between the Manners family and the Boleyn family still needed Clara, and after all, she and Clara had been mother and daughter for so many years. There were still some feelings there.
So, since she couldn't confront Clara directly, she decided to make it up to Nathan and treat him better.
"Nathan, you and Lucas wait out here for a bit. I'll go check if Dylan and Clara are awake," Elodie told Nathan before heading to call Clara.
Dennis glanced at Elodie, then at Nathan, and sighed softly.
"Lucas, you're back!" Just then, before Elodie could knock on Clara's door, Dylan came out of a bedroom.
Seeing the four people in the living room, Dylan naturally walked over to Lucas, "Lucas, you okay?"
He knew he got out so quickly thanks to Lucas's help. He'd been uneasy all night since Lucas hadn't returned. Now seeing Lucas, Dylan finally felt relieved.
Elodie saw Dylan come out and didn't rush to call Clara. Instead, she walked directly to Dylan and looked him over carefully.
Dylan had been in bad shape when they brought him home last night, and she was worried. But even though she was concerned, she didn't interrupt Dylan and Lucas's conversation.
She knew in her heart that Dylan's release was thanks to Lucas.
"I'm fine, how about you?" Lucas asked Dylan, also checking him out.
Dylan had been detained for several days, not only physically tortured but also mentally scarred. Although he still had a smile on his face, Lucas could tell he hadn't fully recovered.
Just thinking about how Dylan was tormented by a few casual words made Lucas furious.
Seeing that Elodie was not going to call Clara, Lucas didn't push her. He suddenly remembered the information Emma had found for him. The main reason Dylan was targeted this time was because of the Lewis family.
However, if he traced it back, Clara was somewhat involved in this.
"I'm fine, Lucas." Dylan forced a smile to reassure Lucas, "Let's just leave it at that, Lucas. Don't go after Katniss."
Thinking about the trouble he went through this time, Dylan couldn't help but feel apprehensive about Katniss. He didn't expect Katniss to have him detained for several days, and his usually pampered body was almost exhausted.
He didn't want Lucas to suffer the same.
Lucas shook his head at Dylan's words, "It wasn't Katniss."
"What?" Dylan didn't understand what Lucas meant.
Before he was released, Lucas had visited him at the police station, firmly believing that Katniss was targeting him and pretending to be innocent, blaming others.
It was Lucas's certainty that made Dylan also firmly resent Katniss.
But now, Lucas was saying it wasn't Katniss?
Then who could it be?
Who would go to such lengths to target him?
He asked himself, since coming to Starhaven, he hadn't crossed anyone other than Katniss.
"It wasn't Katniss, it was the Lewis family," Lucas said, sounding frustrated.
"The Lewis family?" Dylan's eyes widened as he tried to process this. "You mean the Lewis family I'm thinking of?"
The Lewis family was well-known in Starhaven. They weren't as big as the Andersons or the Kates, but they were still a significant name.
To the Manners family, who weren't even that prominent in Luminous City, the Lewis family was a giant.
But he hadn't done anything to provoke the Lewis family.
"Lucas, why would the Lewis family come after me? I've never even dealt with them!"
Dylan felt incredibly wronged, but even if he did, he only dared to complain to Lucas, not to the Lewis family.
Or rather, he didn't even have the right to stand in front of the Lewis family and question them.
Thinking about the Lewis family made him feel as powerless as Lucas.
Lucas sighed, "You got caught in the crossfire this time."
Emma's people had dug up all the details, and Lucas knew the whole story. But he was hesitant to tell Dylan. Even if Dylan knew, he couldn't do anything to the Lewis family, and Lucas feared Dylan would feel defeated.
Lucas genuinely cared for his family.
"Lucas, tell me how I got caught up in this." Dylan saw Lucas's hesitation and quickly sat down next to him.
It was then that Dylan noticed Dennis sitting beside Lucas.
He nodded at Dennis as a greeting, and Dennis smiled and answered for Lucas, "Lucas is worried you'll feel defeated if you know."
"I won't," Dylan gritted his teeth, feeling a bit defiant, and said directly, "Even if I can't do anything to the Lewis family, I can still deal with their underlings."
Dennis then asked Lucas, "Should I explain?"
As he asked, he glanced at the others in the room.
Elodie and Nathan were curious about the matter, too.
"Go ahead," Lucas sighed.
He had already shared the results from Emma with Dennis, and now he didn't have the energy to recount the story. Having Dennis explain was convenient.
Dennis nodded and invited Elodie to sit down, "Mrs. Manners, please sit down and listen."
"Alright," Elodie quickly sat on the opposite sofa. She was also eager to know why the Lewis family, which she had never heard of, had targeted Dylan so harshly.
Once Elodie was seated, Dennis began explaining the entanglements between the Lewis family and Johnson.
Naturally, he couldn't avoid mentioning Clara and Johnson's involvement.
Dennis explained clearly, and the Manners family members weren't particularly foolish. After hearing his explanation, they understood that Dylan had been manipulated by Johnson.
In Dylan's case, Johnson was just a meddler, but since the Lewis family was involved, Dylan inevitably suffered.
"That Johnson! He's outrageous!" Elodie was the first to express her displeasure after understanding the situation.
If it weren't for Johnson, the Lewis family wouldn't have retaliated against Dylan.
It was all Johnson's fault!
"Did he do it on purpose?" Dylan frowned tightly.
When he first arrived in Starhaven, he respected Johnson, but he never expected Johnson to be scheming behind his back.
This made the little respect he had for Johnson vanish instantly.
