Chapter 501 I Bet You Don't Dare
"You wouldn't dare!" Dione scoffed, glancing at Clara's sweat-drenched face.
Seeing Clara in obvious pain, Dione realized she wasn't faking it.
"Find a restroom nearby and stop for a bit," Dione finally instructed the driver, showing a rare moment of kindness.
The driver followed the order and soon pulled over by the roadside.
Clara whispered a thank you and clutched her stomach as she headed towards the public restroom.
Violette and Dione stayed in the car, but a bodyguard followed Clara to stand guard at the restroom entrance.
Once Clara disappeared inside, Violette remarked, "You think Clara's trying to pull a fast one on us?"
Dione shrugged indifferently, "Who cares? As long as someone's watching her, she can't get away."
Their job was simply to deliver Clara to Emma. They just needed to ensure Clara didn't run off midway. Whatever other drama Clara might cause wasn't their concern.
That's why they hadn't intervened when Clara texted Lucas right in front of them earlier.
It wasn't long before Clara returned, looking much better than before, her tension visibly eased.
"Sorry, I ate something bad this morning," Clara apologized softly as she got back into the car, addressing Dione and Violette.
Clara was now much more relaxed, both physically and mentally. She had already texted Desmond, so she wasn't worried about Emma catching on if she needed to contact him in front of her.
Violette shot Clara a disdainful look and didn't respond.
"If you feel pain again, just hold it in," Dione said coolly, giving Clara a sharp look.
Clara knew she had no right to argue, so she smiled and nodded.
Dione, finding Clara's compliance boring, pursed her lips. Once Clara was seated, she told the driver, "Drive faster. Don't keep Ms. Kate waiting."
Curious, Clara asked, "Ms. Saunders, are you specifically taking me to see Ms. Kate?"
She didn't think so; she was just trying to provoke Dione into revealing something.
Dione frowned deeply, but before she could respond, Violette rolled her eyes, "Who do you think you are? Specially picking you up?"
Clara turned to Violette, puzzled, "So, you two are also going to see Ms. Kate?"
Honestly, Clara had expected Dione and Violette to be Emma's minions, but picking her up along the way seemed too convenient.
Dione gave Clara a somewhat straightforward answer. "Ms. Kate asked us to bring you along because some of the things we're handling for her involve you."
"Involve me?" Clara's interest was piqued.
Though she suspected it wasn't anything good, knowing in advance would help her prepare.
Unfortunately, Dione didn't elaborate.
Violette, impatient, snapped, "You'll find out when we get there. Why ask so many questions now?"
Dione glanced at Violette, trying to calm her, "Violette, don't get angry."
Violette huffed and glared at Clara again.
Clara didn't ask further, lowering her head in thought.
She was trying to figure out what Dione meant by things involving her.
But before she could make sense of it, her phone suddenly rang.
It was a call.
Clara's heart tightened, and Dione and Violette turned their attention to her.
"Can I answer it?" Clara didn't immediately take out her phone but asked Dione and Violette.
Violette snorted, "Who cares?"
Dione said, "Go ahead."
She hadn't stopped Clara from texting Lucas earlier, so there was no need to prevent her from answering a call now.
Clara then took out her phone and was surprised to see the caller ID.
It was Ryan.
Her previously calm expression instantly tensed, and she frowned, wanting to hang up.
But before she could press the button, Dione spoke up in confusion.
Violette leaned over and was equally surprised, "Ryan? How can he still contact you?"
Clara, hearing that they knew Ryan, felt a growing sense of foreboding. Her finger, poised to hang up, froze.
"How do you know him?" Clara asked, her voice trembling.
She now seriously suspected that Dione and Violette's tasks for Emma involved Ryan.
Dione said, "Why don't you answer the call first?"
Their knowledge of Ryan wasn't something that could be explained in a few words.
Clara gritted her teeth and finally answered.
As soon as the call connected, Ryan's voice came through, "Clara? Why haven't you come to see me yet?"
Ryan had called Clara shortly after being arrested, but he had been waiting for two hours, and she hadn't arrived. He was growing impatient.
Especially since the drugs found in his car matched his fingerprints, he was increasingly anxious.
He wanted to be bailed out! Clara must have a way!
Clara sensed Ryan's agitation and quickly tried to calm him, "Mr. Martin, I'm sorry. Something came up, but I'll come to see you as soon as I can."
She had no intention of visiting Ryan, but she hadn't left Starhaven yet and couldn't sever ties with him just yet.
"This is the last time I'm calling you. You'd better be here by noon! Or else," Ryan threatened before handing the phone back to the waiting officer.
Clara felt a wave of nausea as Ryan hung up.
Despite the disgust, Clara was already planning how to completely dissociate herself from Ryan's crimes when she met him.
She had never left any evidence of her involvement in the plot against Katniss. So as long as she denied everything and revealed how Ryan had used her photos to threaten her, any accusations he made would be seen as baseless slander.
After the call ended, Dione and Violette continued to stare at Clara, intrigued.
In the confined space of the car, they had heard Ryan's arrogant tone.
It was his attitude towards Clara that piqued their curiosity.
"Why are you staring at me?" Clara asked irritably, meeting their gaze.
She was in a foul mood, thinking about how she had deleted the photos from Ryan's phone but still feared he might implicate her in the kidnapping plot against Katniss.
Being threatened by Ryan now made her feel extremely frustrated.
Fortunately, once she returned to Luminous City, she wouldn't have to worry about Ryan's accusations.
She had taken two calls from Ryan that morning, avoiding any mention of Katniss to prevent the police from suspecting her involvement.
She hoped Ryan could stay calm and say as little as possible that could harm her.
