Chapter 371 You Should Be Glad Nothing Happened
Ethan shot a cold look at Clara and asked, "Nothing happened that night, right?"
Clara's face went pale; she hadn't expected Ethan to bring that up.
She bit her lip and looked down, staying silent. Ethan frowned, watching her.
He couldn't see Clara's expression, nor did he care to.
After a few seconds, Ethan grew impatient and pressed, "Not talking?"
Clara was startled by his tone. She made up her mind and raised her head, asking, "If I tell you, will you let me go? I was involved, but it was mostly Johnson's doing!"
Besides, Johnson was also tied to Scarlett's car accident case.
Johnson wouldn't be getting out anytime soon, so why not let him take the fall for everything?
"Let you go?" Ethan frowned. "No one bailed you out?"
He thought of Clara's previous man, Desmond. Though he didn't know much about them, he figured Desmond would try to bail Clara out.
Clara gritted her teeth in frustration. Seeing Ethan's clueless expression, she realized it was his subordinates who were acting against her.
Ethan hadn't specifically targeted her to prevent her bail; it was his subordinates trying to please him by making such a rule.
"Yeah, Dylan came, but the cops said I couldn't be bailed out." Clara looked pitifully at Ethan. "Ethan, I was tricked by Johnson. I won't dare to do it again. Please let me go..."
Ethan coldly interrupted her, "Answer my question first."
Clara loved to play the victim, and Ethan had to guard against her. He didn't intend to get further involved with her, but he also didn't plan to completely crush her.
Clara bit her lip.
She didn't know whether to tell the truth.
That night, Ethan had been drugged and slept deeply.
Even if she had wanted something to happen, it wouldn't have been possible.
But she feared that if she said nothing happened, Ethan would turn and leave.
After all, she had managed to control Ethan before because he believed something had happened when he woke up.
"Nothing?" Ethan questioned.
His voice was cold and sudden, startling Clara.
She couldn't withstand the pressure and nodded.
"You should be glad nothing happened," Ethan said coldly, then turned and left.
Before leaving, he spoke to the police.
Colin happened to be there and respectfully saw Ethan off.
Then he turned and scolded the young officer who had been on duty the previous night.
"What happened? You can't just say she can't be bailed out. Couldn't you come up with another reason?"
The young officer asked nervously, "What should I do now, Colin? Mr. Anderson said not to make things difficult because of him."
Colin slapped the officer's head. "Are you stupid? Let the person who wants to bail her out come and pay more money, got it?"
The young officer nodded, and Colin left.
Once Colin was gone, the young officer quickly let Clara contact someone to bail her out.
This time, Clara directly contacted Dylan.
Dylan had taken leave from the hospital to find a way.
Desmond, equally worried, sat beside him.
The two were fretting over their lack of options when Dylan received the call from the police.
Upon hearing the news, they rushed to the station.
When they learned a large bail amount was needed, Desmond didn't hesitate and paid it.
Desmond's eagerness made Dylan tolerate him a bit more.
Though they had been working together out of necessity, if Dylan had found a way to get Clara out on his own, he wouldn't have bothered discussing it with Desmond.
After completing the process, Clara was finally released.
"Dylan," Clara cried with joy as she hugged Dylan.
Dylan gently patted her back, comforting her. "It's okay now, Clara. Let's go home."
Clara shook her head. "The place Johnson gave me, I don't want to go back."
Hearing Johnson's name, Dylan frowned in disgust. "Come with me. I have a place to stay."
Though Dylan's place was a bit remote, Starhaven's living costs were high.
With Nathan and Elodie still in the hospital, he tended to be frugal.
Listening to their conversation, Desmond wanted to speak but couldn't find an opening, so he followed them with a bitter smile.
Before they left the station, a police officer called out, "Clara, wait."
Clara was startled and clung to Dylan, looking at the officer.
She was terrified of these people, afraid they'd lock her up again.
Though the conditions inside weren't bad, her mental state was tormented.
"Is there something else, officer?" Dylan asked, protecting Clara.
"Johnson, who was arrested with her, wants to see her."
Clara shook her head immediately. "I don't want to see him."
The officer didn't insist. "Then go ahead. I've delivered the message."
The Thompson family was in dire straits. The officer had done his part by passing the message and had no intention of forcing Clara to see Johnson.
Clara breathed a sigh of relief but felt a sense of foreboding, as if something bad was about to happen.
But she desperately wanted to avoid Johnson, wishing to stay far away.
Once in the car, Clara's anxious heart finally calmed a bit.
Desmond drove in the front seat, mostly silent. Clara and Dylan didn't pay much attention to him, leaving him with no chance to speak.
Dylan sat beside Clara, soothing her in a low voice. He talked about moving Clara's belongings to his place and then taking her to the hospital to see Nathan and Elodie.
"Nathan is weak. I didn't tell him about your situation," Dylan sighed. "But now that you're out, you can see him."
Clara nodded obediently. "I understand."
Desmond wanted to speak from the front seat but held back.
Dylan's plan was good, but plans often change. Before they reached the villa, Johnson had arranged for Clara, and Dylan received a call from the hospital.
Though he had taken leave, he was still on call.
With the call, the hospital needed him, and he had to go back immediately.
Clara, beside him, understood Dylan's predicament and said considerately, "Dylan, go ahead. I can move by myself."
Desmond finally found an opportunity to speak. "I'm here. I'll help Clara move."
Dylan, still worried, had no choice but to leave. He gave Clara a few instructions and had Desmond pull over so he could catch a cab.
With Dylan gone, only Clara and Desmond remained in the car.
Desmond wanted to mend their relationship and offered a dry reassurance, "Clara, don't worry. I'll help you."
Clara, distracted, hadn't paid much attention to Desmond before. Now that Dylan was gone, she noticed Desmond still wore a mask.
She asked suspiciously, "Desmond, is your allergy still not better?"
