Chapter 506 Foolish Behavior

While Clara was negotiating with Emma, the police showed up looking for Maximilian.

Since they had contacted Maximilian through Patrick, he was there too, essentially leading the way.

"Hey, Max," Patrick greeted casually as he arrived with the officers.

Maximilian glanced up and immediately noticed the two officers standing beside him.

"Do you need my help with an investigation?" he asked, getting straight to the point.

Earlier that morning, Ryan had stopped them. Although Maximilian had already sent his bodyguards and Patrick to cooperate with the investigation, it wasn't surprising that they wanted to speak with him directly for thoroughness.

"Yes, we also need Ms. Manners to cooperate with the investigation," one of the officers said.

Maximilian frowned. "Katniss is taking an exam right now. It hasn't finished yet."

"That's fine, Mr. Hamilton. We can start with you. We have some questions," the officer replied.

Maximilian nodded, ready to cooperate. The officers quickly began asking their questions.

However, Maximilian soon sensed something was off.

Especially when one of the questions directly asked if he or Katniss had ever been involved with drugs. Maximilian's brows furrowed even more. "Drugs?"

"Yes."

"No," Maximilian said firmly. "Neither Katniss nor I have ever touched drugs, nor would we ever."

He scanned the two officers, seemingly guessing something but choosing not to ask further.

The officers quickly finished their questions.

Before leaving, they exchanged contact information with Maximilian.

Given that neither he nor Katniss was a major suspect and Maximilian had been very cooperative, the officers maintained a polite demeanor. "Mr. Hamilton, once Ms. Manners finishes her exam and can cooperate with the investigation, please contact us."

Maximilian instructed Conrad to see them out.

Once Conrad had escorted them out, Maximilian called Patrick over.

"What's going on? Is Ryan accusing us?" Maximilian asked as soon as Patrick walked in, voicing his suspicion.

Patrick replied, "You guessed it. But the police probably didn't believe him."

Before bringing the police over, Patrick had considered whether to give Maximilian a heads-up. But he figured that Ryan's attempt to pin drugs on Katniss was so absurd that Maximilian would handle it easily, so there was no need to worry too much.

"Is Ryan mainly accusing Katniss?" Maximilian asked again.

From the officers' insistence on questioning Katniss, Maximilian had already deduced that Ryan was making baseless accusations against her.

But how could Katniss possibly be involved with drugs?

Even if he were somehow involved, Katniss definitely wouldn't be.

Thinking about this, Maximilian couldn't help but feel exasperated.

"Ryan claims the drugs in his car were given to him by Katniss. Who knows who put that idea in his head? It's like he's lost his mind," Patrick said, finding Ryan's actions utterly foolish.

Maximilian thought to himself that Ryan was not only foolish but also disgusting.

"Who has seen him?"

Maximilian didn't believe Ryan could be this stupid. After all, claiming Katniss gave him the drugs also confirmed his involvement with them.

He remembered that earlier, Patrick had mentioned Ryan refused to admit the drugs were his, even when fingerprints were found. How could he suddenly change his story in just a few hours?

"Clara saw him, but I don't know what was said. The police would know, though, since they have surveillance," Patrick said regretfully.

Although he could hack into the police surveillance to see what Clara said, he decided against it. The police system wasn't as easy to breach as a random hotel's, and erasing all traces would be difficult.

Moreover, Maximilian and Katniss were innocent, so there was no need to risk it and potentially cause more trouble.

Seeing Patrick's expression, Maximilian knew what he was thinking. "You don't need to get involved. I have a good idea who's behind this."

"Who?" Patrick asked, intrigued.

Before Maximilian could answer, his phone rang.

Maximilian took out his phone, and Patrick leaned in to see the caller ID.

"It's Chris," Patrick noted, showing no intention of leaving. He waited for Maximilian to answer.

Maximilian didn't delay and answered the call.

"What's up, Chris?"

He had decided last minute to accompany Katniss to the Amber District, but he had made sure to leave clear instructions for Chris.

Chris spoke in a low voice, "Ms. Kate is at the office."

"Tell her I'm not there," Maximilian said, his expression unchanged upon hearing that Emma had gone to the office.

Chris's tone was complicated. "She said she's not there to see you. She's there to break a contract on someone else's behalf."

As he spoke, Chris glanced at Emma, who was sitting calmly across from him.

It wasn't that he wanted to sit across from Emma while contacting Maximilian, but Emma had been so persistent.

When he moved to the window to make the call, she followed him. When he tried to move to another room, she had asked if there was something she wasn't supposed to hear or if he was planning to misrepresent her words.

Chris had no choice but to sit back down on the couch under Emma's watchful and mischievous gaze.

Maximilian asked, "Is today's contract related to the Kate family?"

If he remembered correctly, the company they were about to partner with was supposed to be very reputable.

"Yes," Chris confirmed. Because Emma was right there, he chose his words carefully. "Ms. Kate said that if you come to the office to see her, she won't break the contract."

Chris found this situation absurd. Emma had insisted he relay this message to Maximilian, and now she looked satisfied as he did so.

"Is she right there with you?" Maximilian asked.

From the way Chris had been speaking quietly, Maximilian had guessed that Emma was likely hovering around him, not allowing him to make the call in private.

Chris answered honestly, "Yes."

"Put me on speaker," Maximilian instructed.

Chris anticipated that Maximilian's next words might not be pleasant, but Emma's behavior warranted it. So, he put the call on speaker without hesitation.

"It's on."

As soon as Chris spoke, Maximilian's voice came through the phone.

"Ms. Kate, feel free to do as you please. I don't care about the Kate family's partnership."

Maximilian's tone was cold, distant, and openly disdainful.

Emma's eyes widened, and she stood up abruptly, her face turning red. "What do you mean by that?"

"Ms. Kate, please leave," Maximilian said.
