Chapter 375 This is Fate
As Clara and Desmond rushed to the hospital, Katniss got a call from Dylan.
"Dylan asked her to treat Nathan and stabilize his condition."
Without a second thought, she refused.
The last time she treated Nathan, he accused her of bullying Clara.
Why should she bother treating someone who only brings her trouble?
Besides, even though she had only treated Nathan twice since he arrived at Starhaven, she knew his current condition well enough.
Even if she didn't go, he would survive for now.
At the hospital, Dylan, who had finally found some free time, informed Clara that she could visit.
But upon noticing Nathan's poor state, he thought of asking Katniss to come and help.
He never expected Katniss to refuse so decisively, without even giving a reason.
Just as he was about to ask why, he heard the busy signal on the phone.
"Katniss!" Dylan's expression darkened immediately.
He knew it.
Katniss couldn't possibly be genuinely kind. She had agreed to treat Nathan before, but now she was going back on her word, which made him resent her.
Dylan had long forgotten that without Katniss, Nathan might not have survived.
Annoyance flashed in his eyes as he paced around, finally gritting his teeth and entering Nathan's room.
Nathan saw Dylan's grim expression and spoke knowingly, "She refused, didn't she?"
"You guessed it. She hung up on me!" Dylan felt embarrassed and irritated as he spoke.
Nathan, however, responded indifferently, "It's fine. Maybe it's for the best."
Dylan looked at Nathan a few times, ultimately sighing and not mentioning Katniss again.
"Clara will be here soon. If she sees you so weak, she'll be worried again." Dylan said as he moved closer and sat by Nathan's bedside.
He had finally found some time to sit down and rest, easing his fatigue.
Nathan, who had been indifferent, frowned upon hearing that Clara would be worried.
Dylan thought Nathan frowned because he didn't want Clara to worry, but only Nathan knew the real reason.
He frowned because he couldn't bear the thought of Clara worrying about him.
Before coming to Starhaven, he had realized that despite his illness, he rarely made poor decisions, except when it came to their beloved sister, Clara. His decisions would fall apart.
On the eve of coming to Starhaven, in his near-death delirium, he seemed to see many things. Because of this, he thought his mind was clear and that he wouldn't make the same mistakes again.
But Clara's visit had led him to lash out at Katniss once more.
He realized it afterward but was powerless to resist.
He thought, 'This must be fate.'
Though he didn't understand why, he couldn't help but follow fate to see what awaited him at the end.
While he was lost in thought, the door to the room was knocked on.
It wasn't just Clara who entered, but Desmond as well.
Desmond wore a mask, but as soon as he spoke, Dylan and Nathan recognized his voice.
After some pleasantries, the atmosphere was harmonious.
Clara remembered that she got into Starhaven Medical University thanks to Nathan's recommendation to Luminous City and expressed her gratitude and concern.
Hearing Clara's caring words, Nathan nodded appreciatively, "Don't worry, Clara. I'll protect you."
Clara was moved to tears and hugged Nathan to thank him.
Nathan gently patted her back to comfort her.
But no one knew that inside Nathan, a detached part of him coldly watched this loving scene.
After chatting with Nathan, Clara urged him to take care of himself and left the room with Dylan.
Desmond followed but kept a respectful distance, giving them space to talk.
"Dylan, how's Mom doing?" Clara asked as soon as she left the room, her thoughts turning to Elodie, bringing a wave of sorrow.
Dylan replied, "Mom shows signs of waking up. The doctors say she needs more stimulation."
"Stimulation?" Clara repeated, then excitedly asked, "Dylan, how can we stimulate Mom to wake up?"
Dylan shook his head. "I'm not sure, but the doctors said she showed signs of waking up after you left last time."
Because of this, Dylan was eager for Clara to come to the hospital again to try.
If Elodie could wake up and recover, he wouldn't be so tied down by the hospital.
He was nearly driven mad by the overtime.
Clara lowered her eyes, recalling what she had said to Elodie during her visit, and had a guess.
"Dylan, don't worry. I'll do my best to wake Mom up!" But in her excitement, she coughed violently, making Dylan anxious again.
Clara coughed for a while before recovering, her face much paler.
Desmond, who had been following a few steps behind, quickly stepped forward and carefully supported her, "Clara? Are you feeling unwell?"
Clara's health had always been poor, which they all knew. In Luminous City, she could receive long-term care, but in Starhaven, she didn't have the same conditions.
"I'm fine, just a bit of chest tightness," Clara said weakly, her face pale.
Hearing this, Desmond and Dylan both became worried.
"This is serious! You have chest tightness! We need to get you checked out first." Dylan decided firmly, wanting Clara to get checked out.
Clara, however, refused decisively, "Dylan, the check-up might take a long time. I should see Mom first."
Her voice was weak, and her appearance pitiful. Despite his concern, Dylan reluctantly agreed.
"Alright, but I'll stay with you to make sure you're okay."
Desmond quickly added, "Clara, I'll stay with you too."
Desmond and Dylan accompanied Clara to Elodie's room, but their attention was more on Clara's condition than on Elodie lying in bed.
Even the nurse, seeing Clara, showed concern, "Ms. Manners, what's wrong?"
Clara smiled weakly, "I'm fine. You can leave. I want to talk to Mom."
The nurse looked at the two men guarding Clara, nodded, and left.
After the nurse left, Clara, with their help, sat by Elodie's bedside.
Once seated, she said lightly, "See, I'm fine. You two can leave."
Dylan hesitated, "Clara, you look so pale. I'm worried."
Desmond was about to say something, but Clara started coughing violently again, scaring them into wanting to take her for a check-up immediately.
But Clara firmly refused.
"Dylan, Desmond, let me talk to Mom for a while." Clara pleaded weakly, not forgetting to promise, "I'll go for a check-up afterward."
Clara was skilled at playing the sympathy card. Before she could plead much, Desmond and Dylan agreed out of concern.
After they left the room, they waited outside, worried about Clara.
Meanwhile, inside the room, Clara tearfully recounted her experiences to Elodie.
