Chapter 454 Find a Way to Keep an Eye

After Elodie left the ward, Nathan forced a weak smile and said to Lucas, "Hey, Lucas, let's sit and chat for a bit."

As he spoke, he extended his frail arm from under the blanket and patted the side of the bed twice.

There were chairs in the room, but Nathan, sensing that Lucas might be about to scold him, decided to show some vulnerability in advance.

Lucas looked at Nathan's pale face and the weak smile on it, and sighed for no apparent reason.

His anger dissipated significantly.

He sat down next to the bed.

"We're all working hard to find a kidney for Clara," Lucas said slowly, watching Nathan's face closely.

He had some guesses about Nathan's thoughts and wanted to use this opportunity to test him.

Nathan lowered his eyes. "Thanks, Lucas. Any news on the kidney?"

He wasn't optimistic about Lucas and Dylan's efforts to find a kidney, but there was no other way.

Who in their right mind would willingly donate such an important organ?

Most kidney donations came from people who signed donation agreements before their death.

After considering various factors, there weren't many usable kidneys available.

Moreover, there were already many people ahead of Clara on the waiting list.

Nathan sighed deeply.

Seeing Nathan lower his head, Lucas didn't say anything further, allowing the room to remain silent.

After a long while, Nathan finally looked up and asked, "Katniss hasn't been answering calls. What should we do?"

He instinctively wanted to change the subject to divert Lucas's attention from Clara's kidney issue because he was doing his best for Clara's illness.

Hearing him mention Katniss, Lucas shook his head. "There's nothing we can do. She's probably in training now. I'll try calling her again at noon."

Nathan responded with a nod and then said, "Lucas, I think I can be discharged. Can you help me convince Mom?"

He wanted to be discharged as soon as possible and avoid Elodie taking Clara to another hospital for the kidney transplant.

He had mentioned the discharge to Elodie, but she had flatly refused.

Given his unstable condition in recent days, he knew she would refuse again, so he hadn't brought it up.

But in the past few days, he had been trying hard to stabilize his condition.

Even though he still felt unwell, he didn't let Elodie know.

Although his condition hadn't improved, he at least looked better on the surface.

Lucas didn't answer his question, but suddenly asked, "Do you want to donate your kidney to Clara?"

When he asked this, he felt a sudden clarity—if he couldn't stop it, he would find a way to monitor it.

Nathan was taken aback by Lucas's question and didn't know how to respond.

He didn't want to lie to Lucas.

So, Nathan forced a smile and said, "Didn't you know the matching results? It wasn't successful."

Dylan must have informed Lucas of the matching results, but he should have also told Lucas to keep it from him.

"Yeah, as long as you know," Lucas nodded, reaching out to touch Nathan's head.

Nathan let him touch his head and continued to play the emotional card. "Lucas, I don't want to stay in the hospital anymore. I want to be discharged and take a look around. Since I came to Starhaven, I haven't had a chance to explore."

Lucas paused, listening to his rambling.

Nathan pressed on, "Lucas, so please help me convince Mom."

Lucas looked at him for a long time.

Just when Nathan thought Lucas would refuse outright, Lucas said, "Alright."

Nathan's sickly face lit up with surprise, and he quickly expressed his gratitude, "Thanks, Lucas. I'll be careful once I'm out."

Lucas sighed, "I'll talk to Mom, but I can't promise she'll agree."

Nathan's condition was so poor that Elodie might stubbornly insist on keeping him in the hospital for treatment.

But considering Nathan might still be thinking about donating his kidney, it might be better to convince Elodie to agree and then reveal the truth.

He wasn't indifferent to Clara; he was just making the same choice as the rest of the Manners family.

Lucas's thoughts on the kidney donation were aligned with Dylan's—Nathan was more important than Clara.

"Lucas, just help me talk to Mom. I'll also find a way to bring up the discharge with her," Nathan said, his eyes sparkling.

Although Lucas said he might not be able to convince Elodie, Nathan felt confident he could.

Elodie loved all of them equally, but she treated Lucas, the heir of the Manners family, differently.

Lucas's words should carry more weight with Elodie.

Thinking of this, Nathan thanked Lucas a few more times and then yawned.

He was afraid that if Lucas stayed in his room, he might ask more questions and forget to talk to Elodie about the discharge.

If Lucas left now, he would probably remember to bring up the discharge with Elodie.

Lucas saw through Nathan's scheme but didn't expose it.

He stood up and said, "If you're tired, get some rest. I'm heading out."

As soon as he left the room, Lucas saw Elodie sitting outside, waiting.

At that moment, Elodie was nervously holding her phone, seemingly making a call but not speaking.

Since she left, Elodie had been wondering if Clara was really at a friend's house.

The more she thought about it, the more worried she became.

Finally, she couldn't resist calling Clara.

But when she called, she found that Clara's phone was constantly busy.

"Mom?"

Lucas's voice brought Elodie back to reality.

She looked up at him.

Elodie listened to the busy signal and put down her phone, worriedly saying, "Clara's phone has been busy. I can't reach her."

"Busy?"

Lucas squinted and dialed a number, hearing the busy signal as well.

"She might be on the phone with someone," Lucas reassured her.

But Elodie was still worried. "Since I left, Clara's phone has been busy."

Lucas also found it strange but continued to comfort her, "Try calling again at noon."

He planned to contact Katniss at noon anyway.

If he couldn't reach Clara, he would figure out what to do then.

Elodie, still uneasy, agreed.

Lucas then brought up Nathan's request. "Mom, Nathan wants to be discharged. The hospital is too stifling. If he wants to leave, let him."

They all knew the hospital couldn't cure Nathan.

The only person they knew who could cure Nathan was Katniss, but she had given up.

Elodie sighed. "It's not that I don't want him to leave. I'm worried he'll try to match with Clara again."

Lucas thought to himself that Nathan probably already knew he was a match for Clara.

But he needed to calm Elodie down, so he said, "Don't worry, I'll have someone keep an eye on him."

Elodie hesitated.

Seeing her wavering, Lucas continued to persuade her, "Forcing him to stay in the hospital might be worse for his health."

After her rebirth
