Chapter 507 Tearing Faces
Emma's face flushed with anger, her teeth grinding together.
"Max, come to the office. We need to talk about our partnership."
She struggled to keep her voice steady, trying to hide her frustration.
She had been planning this for so long, even going as far as to sabotage the Kate family's business. How could she just let it go?
Sure, she intended to use the partnership to manipulate Max, but she genuinely wanted it to work.
So why didn't Max care at all?
What was going on with him?
She was sure her actions hadn't been discovered. There was no reason for Max to suddenly turn against her!
Emma's mind was racing, trying to figure out why things had gone so wrong.
When had she offended Max?
"What did I do to upset you?"
Her confusion was overwhelming, and she blurted out the question.
Max's voice was cold. "Emma, maybe you should think about that."
Emma's brows furrowed even more.
In her mind, since Max hadn't pointed out anything specific, he hadn't caught her doing anything wrong.
But if he hadn't found any evidence, why wouldn't he come back to see her?
Could it be just because he wanted to be with Katniss?
Thinking about how Katniss didn't need company during the test, yet Max was foolishly waiting, Emma felt extremely frustrated.
She had thought that by using the partnership as leverage, Max would at least soften his attitude, even if he didn't comply. But his attitude was worse than before.
First, he said he didn't care about the partnership, then he told her to reflect!
It was clear he didn't take her seriously.
"Reflect? I haven't done anything wrong. What should I reflect on? Max, hurry back, you know this partnership is important for both of us!"
Despite her frustration, Emma urged Max to come back again.
Max didn't respond to her; instead, he turned to Chris and said, "Chris, show her out. Don't entertain her anymore."
By having Chris show her out in front of her, it was like a slap in the face.
Emma's face turned dark instantly, glaring at Chris's phone, she asked coldly, "Max! Are you trying to break ties with me?"
The response was the busy tone of a disconnected call.
Max had hung up!
Emma reached out to grab the phone to call back, but Chris was quicker and put the phone away.
Seeing Emma's furious expression, he smiled and said, "Ms. Kate, please leave."
Since Max had instructed him to show her out, he wouldn't accommodate Emma any further.
Emma's arrogance and domineering attitude were something no one liked to deal with.
"You!" Emma pointed at Chris's nose, unable to contain her anger, she snapped, "You just do whatever Max tells you to do?"
Chris stepped back, putting some distance between them, then shrugged innocently, "Ms. Kate, have you forgotten? This is Max's company, of course, I follow his orders."
Emma saw his innocent look, but couldn't suppress her anger, raising her hand to slap Chris.
But Chris was quick, grabbing her wrist.
"Ms. Kate, calm down. I'll have security escort you downstairs."
He called the internal line, and soon security personnel arrived to surround Emma.
"Ms. Kate, please."
Emma had caused a scene more than once, so the security personnel were familiar with her antics.
Surrounded, Emma thought about how her people were still downstairs, unable to come up, and she stomped off in anger.
Amber District.
Compared to Emma's furious outburst, Maximilian, who had hung up the phone, remained calm.
Patrick, however, was intrigued. Seeing Maximilian hang up, he asked, "Why'd you hang up so suddenly?"
He found listening to Emma's "tantrum" quite entertaining, a way to pass the time and lighten the mood.
Maximilian looked at him, "You wanna talk to her?"
Patrick quickly shook his head. "No way."
He would have to be out of his mind to want to talk to Emma. Not only did he dislike her type, but her obsession with Maximilian was enough to make him steer clear.
This kind of trouble wasn't something they could casually provoke.
Maximilian didn't know what Patrick was thinking. Seeing him shake his head, he put away his phone and started walking back.
Patrick followed.
"By the way, Emma's threats didn't seem to scare you at all, Max?" He had heard the entire conversation, as they were close, and Maximilian hadn't tried to hide it from him.
"Fear is useless." Maximilian's voice was steady, giving a reassuring feeling.
Though he said fear was useless, he truly didn't feel any fear or anxiety.
"Yeah, it's useless." Patrick sighed.
The Kate family had long been influential, and surviving in Starhaven often meant relying on the Kate family, a fact many people accepted.
Habits can be a powerful thing.
"But Emma said she wanted to break ties. Do you think she'll do something drastic?" Patrick asked, concerned.
"She already has," Maximilian said, his expression darkening.
When Emma had threatened to break ties, it hadn't stirred much emotion in him.
Breaking ties was nothing to fear.
He had wanted to do it for a long time.
Today's events made Maximilian regret not breaking ties sooner.
If Emma continued to have expectations of him, she would keep targeting Katniss.
Katniss didn't need to endure this.
This time, Emma had only instructed Ryan to slander Katniss. Next time, who knows what Emma might do!
"What?" Patrick was stunned.
He thought about Maximilian's "already," suddenly connecting it to Ryan's accusations.
"Are you saying Ryan's accusations were her doing?" He asked, feeling his theory was a bit far-fetched, and doubting himself.
Maximilian gave a calm but affirmative response, "Yes."
He had suspected Emma was behind Clara's instruction of Ryan.
No one else would be so idle.
"What? How did you figure that out?"
Patrick had wanted to ask earlier when Maximilian mentioned he knew who was behind it, but Chris's call interrupted him. Now, knowing Maximilian's suspicion, he was even more curious about how he figured it out.
"Not now." Maximilian glanced at his watch, then started walking out.
Patrick checked the time, guessing Katniss's morning exam was almost over, and Maximilian was going to pick her up. He quickly followed.
"Going to pick up Katniss? I'll come with you."
Maximilian ignored Patrick, quickly heading downstairs and across the street.
Patrick followed closely, still asking, "Before we get there, tell me how you figured it out?"
