Chapter 382 Provoking the Kate Family

The person splashing Desmond with cold water stopped when they saw he was awake and dragged him outside.

Thrown in front of Emma again, Desmond shouted angrily through his pain, "Who the hell are you people? What do you want?"

Emma kicked Desmond, and when he stopped yelling, she said, "Weren't you glaring at me earlier?"

Desmond, hurting from the kick, dared not speak again. He looked up in the dim light and finally saw Emma's face.

"You, you were the one sitting in the booth next to Dione and Violette?"

The cold water had sobered him up, and Desmond remembered Emma was the one sitting next to Dione and Violette earlier.

She had laughed at him while they were teasing him.

It was because of Emma's mocking that he had glared at her.

He never imagined that such a small action would lead to him being dragged here.

"Seems like you remember," Emma clapped her hands and nodded at the bodyguards. "This guy is so rude. Why don't you teach him a lesson for me?"

These bodyguards had just been sent by her family. She wanted to punish Desmond but didn't want to dirty her hands, so she kept them around.

As soon as she finished speaking, the black-clad bodyguards didn't hesitate to land heavy punches on Desmond.

Desmond was caught off guard, unable to react until the pain hit him, realizing Emma's people intended to beat him to death.

"You dare hit me? I'll call the police! If I call the police, you'll all be arrested!"

But the people hitting him didn't care about his threats.

Emma, hearing Desmond mention the police, found it amusing.

"Don't worry, you can call the police after the beating."

Her brazen tone made Desmond shiver, and the pain seemed to double.

Seeing that his threats were useless and the punches kept coming, Desmond quickly begged for mercy.

"It's all a misunderstanding, I won't call the police! I glared at you by accident, I didn't mean it!"

But his words didn't make Emma speak. She sipped her drink, enjoying the sight of Desmond being beaten.

Desmond curled up, protecting his head while being punched, begging Emma to let him go.

After a while, a man nearby grew concerned and approached Emma, saying, "Don't kill him. I just took over this bar, and haven't made a profit yet."

Emma glanced at her friend and said casually, "Alright, this guy has no backbone. He probably can't take many punches."

The man looked at the wailing Desmond and agreed, "Yeah, he's already crying."

Emma shrugged, "Let him call someone. It'll be more fun."

Knowing Emma's intentions, the man smiled helplessly and went to relay her message.

"Stop for now," the man said, and the bodyguards looked at Emma.

Seeing her nod, they stopped.

After they stopped, the room was filled with Desmond's groans. Though the punches had ceased, the pain hadn't.

Desmond's groans were unbearable. The man, fearing Desmond might anger Emma again, kicked him and warned, "Stop groaning."

Desmond shivered, inhaling sharply from the pain, and quickly shut up.

Once he was silent, the man leaned in and asked, "Scared now?"

Desmond, bruised and trembling, replied, "Scared!"

These people were terrifying.

His whole body hurt, of course, and he was scared.

If he could escape, he would immediately call the cops and have them arrested.

"Scared but not apologizing?" The man seemed to read his mind, suddenly whispering in his ear, "Still thinking about calling the cops? You think that'll help? You've pissed off the Kate family. Even if the police come, they'll have to show her respect."

Desmond quickly apologized, "I'm sorry, it's my fault."

He didn't respond to the man's taunt, but his mind was racing.

The Kate family? He had heard of them in Starhaven, knowing their power was terrifying.

He had offended someone from the Kate family today?

The more he thought, the colder his heart grew.

He could only bow his head and apologize, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry! I was wrong!"

Emma wasn't afraid of the police. Her ruthless methods meant that even if she killed him, the police would likely let it slide for the Kate family.

Blood was on his face and mouth from the beating, making him look pitiful.

Though he was curled up on the ground, apologizing meekly, he felt humiliated and miserable inside.

"Call your family. Apologizing alone won't do. Your family needs to apologize, too." The man, seeing Emma's bored expression, quickly brought up the main point.

Desmond didn't dare ask why his family needed to apologize. He fumbled for his phone in a panic.

Thinking of contacting his family, the first person he thought of was Gabriel.

But Gabriel was far away in Luminous City, unable to help.

Not to mention, he had offended the Kate family, specifically their daughter.

He wouldn't dare tell Gabriel about this.

After thinking it over, the only person in Starhaven he could turn to was Maximilian.

Seeing him hesitate to make the call, the man slapped his face and asked, "What are you waiting for? Make the call."

Desmond quickly found Maximilian's number and dialed.

At that moment, Maximilian was working late at the office.

Chris was discussing a collaboration with the Thorne family.

With Katniss out for a test, Maximilian decided to stay at the office for a couple of days.

Just as he was talking to Chris, his phone rang.

Maximilian glanced at the phone, seeing Desmond's name, and frowned.

"Desmond?" Chris, beside him, saw his hesitation and asked, "Not going to answer?"

Chris found the name familiar, thinking it was Maximilian's troublesome brother.

Chris knew a bit about Maximilian's family situation but didn't know the specifics of their relationship.

Seeing the call, Chris instinctively thought Desmond had caused trouble and needed Maximilian's help.

"Want me to answer? Say you're busy."

Maximilian was already busy with work, and Chris didn't want him to be bothered by other issues.

"I'll answer it myself. Hold on." Maximilian shook his head, walked to the window, and answered the call.

Chris watched Maximilian's back, shaking his head helplessly.

To him, Maximilian handled business efficiently but struggled with personal matters.

But Chris had no right to advise Maximilian, given his messy family situation.

As soon as Maximilian answered, Desmond's panicked voice came through.

"Maximilian, help me!"

Before he could finish, the phone was snatched away.
