Chapter 479 Dare Not Speak Recklessly
Lucas felt that Clara was acting a bit strange.
Was she nervous?
Could something have happened between her and Ryan?
Lucas's brow furrowed suddenly.
"Clara," he called softly, seeing her head bowed and her arms wrapped around herself, trembling slightly.
Clara finally looked up, her eyes brimming with tears as she gazed at Lucas.
"Lucas, Ryan forced me."
Her words were vague, mostly playing the victim.
She didn't want to explain too much, hoping Lucas would fill in the blanks himself and stop her from continuing.
Sure enough, Lucas, feeling sorry for her, interrupted, "Clara, you don't have to say anymore."
Clara shivered again, sobbing as she asked, "Lucas, how did you find out about him?"
She was extremely worried that Lucas had seen photos or met Ryan.
Even though she was a victim in this situation, she had also conspired with Ryan against Katniss.
She didn't want the Manners family to know about any of this.
"I found out by chance," Lucas replied, not wanting to discuss Ryan further.
He brushed off the question, partly to avoid upsetting Clara and partly to get to the main point.
Without waiting for Clara to respond, he continued, "Clara, do you know Ms. Kate?"
Clara was taken aback.
She had been thinking about Ryan, and now Lucas was suddenly asking about Emma.
But when it came to Emma, she didn't dare to say too much.
"Yes," Clara quickly said, "Lucas, I met Ms. Kate once. She's been trying to meet with Maximilian."
Although Clara didn't want to say too much, she also didn't want to reveal that Emma planned to use Desmond to threaten Maximilian into meeting her.
She had already decided to settle down with Desmond in Luminous City and couldn't continue helping Emma as before.
Lucas was pleased with her affirmative answer and nodded with satisfaction before asking, "Can you get in touch with her?"
Clara looked at Lucas in surprise, her lips moving but not giving a definite answer.
Seeing her hesitation, Lucas said, "I have an idea to get Dylan out early, but I need Ms. Kate's help."
He had thought it through. Given his current status, he couldn't wield as much influence in Starhaven as Emma could.
He couldn't find out who was pressuring the police, but Emma could not only find out but also get Dylan released.
So, he had to win Emma over.
Clara understood why Lucas had mentioned that once Dylan was out, they could all return to Luminous City together.
If Emma intervened, Dylan could probably be released the same day.
But how did Lucas know she knew Emma?
Had Emma's people, who were always around her, been discovered by Lucas?
But then Clara thought it over and realized that Lucas couldn't have remained so calm and composed if he had known she was being watched by Emma's people.
With that realization, Clara's tension eased a bit.
"Really?" she asked, still doubtful, looking at Lucas and recalling his words.
Could he get Emma to help Dylan?
Lucas nodded firmly.
Clara then said, "Lucas, I only have Ms. Kate's number."
She had more than just Emma's number, but she didn't dare to contact Emma herself, fearing Emma would bring up Desmond.
Lucas sensed her reluctance to contact Emma and said, "You don't need to contact her. I'll do it myself."
Clara nodded and quickly pulled out her phone, finding Emma's number and reading it out loud.
Just reciting Emma's number made Clara feel a dull ache in the places where Emma's people had hit her before.
Lucas noted the number and reassured Clara a bit more.
Before leaving, he asked, "Do you need help with Ryan?"
Clara immediately shook her head.
She shook her head so quickly, her expression clearly showing refusal.
She didn't want Lucas involved with Ryan.
"Are you sure you don't need my help?" Lucas confirmed.
"No, Lucas, I can handle it. I'll take care of it before we go back to Luminous City," Clara said quickly, her voice trembling slightly.
Lucas sighed, "No matter what, if you need help, just come to me. I'll always help you."
Seeing Clara nod firmly, Lucas said, "Let's leave it at that for today. Clara, go get some rest."
Clara, feeling relieved, bowed her head and walked out.
She now felt both respect and fear towards Lucas.
After Clara left, Lucas didn't contact Emma right away. Instead, he called Dennis first.
Once he had everything sorted with Dennis, he finally called Emma.
When Emma answered, her tone was less than friendly. "Who is this?"
"Ms. Kate, it's Lucas. We met before, do you remember?" Lucas's voice was soft and humble, almost oozing caution through the phone.
Emma enjoyed hearing people speak cautiously, especially when she was in a bad mood.
Lucas's careful flattery was quite pleasing to her.
But she didn't remember everyone she met.
"Who? I don't remember," she said dismissively, not in a hurry to hang up, thinking she could chat a bit before ending the call.
Lucas, sensing her indifference, quickly gave a more detailed response, not forgetting to flatter her further.
He described how they had followed Maximilian's car to his company, subtly embellishing the details to make Emma look good.
By the end, Lucas was practically fuming on Emma's behalf.
"Ms. Kate, you went out of your way to see Mr. Hamilton. He must know how you feel, but..."
Emma seemed intrigued, "But what?"
Lucas's words had pleased her, even if she thought he was exaggerating a bit.
